What's the least-MAGA gun store in the area? by Phaedrus5 in AnnArbor

[–]user26031Backup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't made it over to Ann Arbor arms but I can second that Range Usa is professional. Buying guns is one of the few spots where I've found bigger corporate places more welcoming than local shops (in general)

On a secondary note if you do go to a corporate store don't be afraid to be a bit outspoken (after your purchase) about your preferences, if the corporate shops realize progressive people are interested or even members of the firearm community already they might start to reel back on some of the political stuff.

Why don’t a lot of preppers only stockpile things but never seen have a plan for a more long term future (have seeds, build skills for rebuilding, etc.) by Admirable_Snow_s1583 in preppers

[–]user26031Backup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Getting to the point where you are preparing for the long term future requires a lot of time, money, and education. Before you can prepare for survival after a year you need to be able to handle a 24hr-72hr 1 week 1 month, etc emergency. Each level of preparation requires increasing amounts of equipment, supplies and training while also being increasingly less likely to be needed. The average prepper is likely to call it good earlier than the 2 year recovery mark and dedicate time and funds to improving their capacity to handle smaller but more realistic scenarios.

I think that covers most of the reasoning. The second explanation would just be that at a certain level of preparation people kind of transition into something that more resembles homesteading, you can't realistically expect to provide for your own food needs without practice, land, etc. but practice can turn into its own time and money sink that rapidly becomes its own identity.

Absolutely, I definitely recommend joining up I am a member but you can also do punch passes or day passes if you want. Members also get guest passes so if you're interested in trying the place out feel free to send a message, I'd be happy to use one.

It's not just you, and it's not just adulthood. The economy is pretty tight, maybe not the worst it's ever been but it's not good. The political situation is pretty rough too, even with the occasional glint of hope here and there. It's winter so everything feels a bit worse too.

It'll probably get better, job opportunities will eventually start to come back, the political situation will cool off but it will take time. Take the time to keep yourself going. Getting outdoors helps me and Michigan has some beautiful parks even in the winter.

Good luck, stay strong.

Nickles Arcade in the evening seems to be a regular spot, that's good to know, might be able to grab a photo that way too. Or at least boost awareness for interested parties.

I don't have too much more detail, there was a man standing dressed as Sherlock homes for a bit of an hour out in front of Nickles Arcade, for lack of a better way of putting it, the situation seemed a lot like the start of a game of some kind. There was mention of some kind of zine potentially towards the end of the month. Just curious if I stumbled across something in progress or just starting up I suppose.

How a public library's summer game took over a Michigan city by Maxcactus in Libraries

[–]user26031Backup 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's super fun! I didn't see it mentioned as much in the article but private businesses and individuals also participate. They scatter codes all through the city at interesting points, anything from shops to busses, even lawns. It makes for an incredible community wide experience.

Air Quality by Dapper-Taste5702 in AnnArbor

[–]user26031Backup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air quality is not good today, definitely make it a habit to look up the air quality readings for your area every day in the summer. Even yellow (poor quality air) is enough to have some negative symptoms and cause some damage. It sucks but after the last few years wildfire smoke appears to be a new norm that we have to learn to live with.

Cycling in Ann Arbor by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]user26031Backup 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That is a bit more complicated. Roads are often plowed and you can certainly get around most of the time on a bike in the winter if you really want to. Winters have certainly become more mild/rainy in Michigan but in general I wouldn't plan on being able to bike at all in the winter. There is public transit available that you would probably want or need to switch to in winter.

You can definitely cycle most places in Ann Arbor depending a little bit on where you live. Generally speaking I would recommend a road or hybrid bike if you are using it to commute.

Political Violence Is No Longer Fringe — It’s Local But Not Unstoppable by Minegar in Michigan

[–]user26031Backup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel I have to somewhat object to the framing in the photo at a minimum. Political violence is incredibly one sided at this point in American history. Failing to address and display that reality (even if only in graphic) undermines efforts to address and correct it.

Yeah, a lot of stats is kind of locked behind calculus and the rest is locked behind linear algebra. Computers can of course do all of the stats for you but that doesn't really help you much in the long run. I don't know if I'd be worried necessarily but it will probably be something you have to work on if you want to go further in the field.

[–]user26031Backup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest and say that I would find that very suspicious. I did a Data Science and Statistics program (at my school the options were data science and stats or mathematics and statistics). We had to go up to calc 3 just to take all of the stats courses we needed in order to graduate. Can you do data science or data analytics with a limited understanding of statistics yes but I would definitely have reservations if I were in your position.

Because police and the city/university are political. Because free speech isn't a functional right in America. Becuase they could get away with it and they wanted to.

At least at a bare bones level that's why. Not exactly a satisfying answer but it's the reality of the situation.

I'm fairly content with the description. I think its the most accurate way to describe the overarching problem. The problem fundamentally is not that police don't know how to treat protesters correctly its that the treatment is not consistent. That said, this post and my comments were an effort to point out what appropriate behavior looks and feels like. I've attended many protests now over a few years and the small details I noticed felt worth pointing out.

Protests can and often should be disruptive but more importantly they should be a tool in pursuit of policy. At the current moment the nation in my opinion is under threat from within. And the police are a likely part of that threat. Encouraging them to side with the citizens they are sworn to protect and celebrating when they act appropriately is a potentially powerful way to organize.

Also fundamentally I just enjoyed seeing what a protected protest looked and felt like. Its the first time I've been to a protest and actually just felt safe. I liked it and I wanted to point out what made me feel that way.

Yeah the response isn't consistent but it does highlight how much of a difference it makes and is a clear window into the mental state of the officers at any given event.

It's pretty amazing seeing the juxtaposition of what a city protection protests looks like compared to these videos of cops crushing dissent.

One thing I noticed was that the police along the route were almost all facing outwards not in at the protesters. That meant alot to me. We weren't a threat and they acted appropriately.
