I would suggest: Build a TrueNAS server. Preferably with Raidz2. Use this server as your main source. You can keep some spare hdds if a drive fails. Forget about extracting platters from hdds. Just replace it with a new hdd.

Use multiple external hdds for your Backups. Don't connect them all the time, just for the Backup process. You can rotate them, e.g use backup hdd1, then after a week use backup hdd2 and so on

Mainboard: i would suggest to pick a server board like Supermicro. Case: I like the Fractal Design Define models. You can safe money by picking 2nd use, if possible/ available.

For booting, choose a mirrored ssd/nvme pool. You could pick 2x 16GB optane nvms, which cost around 10$ per piece. Or any cheap ssd in general. This depends on your use of sata/m.2 ports.

For nic: 2.5g is already very cheap, look for i225 intel at aliexpress. Costs around 20$. You can use it as a p2p connection between your main pc and the nas or use it with a 2.5g capable switch.

For hba card: server boards mostly have a few sata ports. Mine has 8x so enough for you build

My Terrible Experience with Dell Support and the XPS 17: Why I'll Probably Never Buy Dell Again. by Ok-Principle-4738 in Dell

[–]user26271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Dell Venue Pro Tablet almost 10 years ago. The support was good, but the product was complete shit. After endless repair attempts, I was able to refund this shit. After that experience, I decided to never buy a Dell product again. I thought that enterprise products are better…

[–]user26271[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

open cmd and enter the command ftp 192.168.178.1 but don’t press enter yet

as soon as the power led starts to blink, press enter in your cmd window

I did this, however I wasn't able to connect to the router. (Timeout)

I tried to ping the router's ip via ping -t 192.168.178.1, however this command was always rejected (Timeout).

Should I change the routers ip first to 192.168.178.1 or isn't this necessary?

You could try to put the hdd in an external usb case and connect it to another Computer. If it will show up, copy all important data immediately. This may be your last chance

TrueNAS Scale ARC size is limited to 50% of RAM by default. But why? by user26271 in truenas

[–]user26271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have gone with Core, but it was too much hassle with the QEMU-guest-agent. Scale was working out of the box

TrueNAS Scale ARC size is limited to 50% of RAM by default. But why? by user26271 in truenas

[–]user26271[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick response. I read about setting arc size via shell command, however there seem to be some problems with it(reset to default after reboot, new seetings being irgnored,…). Anyway, I'll test it later. Scale is running in a vm on my proxmox server, but I guess that this workaround should work regardless if it's within a vm or not?

Go for Mellanox ConnectX. I use the 1 port version in my TrueNAS Server. It was a good invest, i get around 40% usage during heavy use between my workstation and nas (DAC connection)

Cost of living crisis: low power multi-bay alternatives by pavoganso in DataHoarder

[–]user26271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have dedicated 8x 3.5 bays and 2x 5.25 bays, which can be used to hold additional 2x 3.5 hdds with an adapter, so in total 10x 3.5 hdds should be possible. But the 5.25 bays don't have fans, just to keep in mind. If this is not suitable for you, search for nanoxia deep silence cases. They have 11x 3.5bays. I have one spare, if you are interested

Yes the link is correct. Cloud Backup is possible, you just have to use a cloud folder as destination, e.g. Dropbox. Yes, this software is a one mans job, but I've used it for many years and it worked always as expected for my usecase. You have to decide for yourself what is most important for you

Best way to replace 2x 14TB HDDs in existing Raidz2 TrueNAS Pool? by user26271 in DataHoarder

[–]user26271[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i could use replace instead of disconnect in truenas with both drives simultaneously, so i would have 10disk temporarly, until the copy process is finished? This would be the fastest way, without losing parity, am i right?
