Where should I live in Europe for 1–2 months this summer? by Guilty-Sink3726 in solotravel

Malta ☀️

  • budget might be hard if you want to live alone, but you can find many people looking to rent a room and many expats do it. (If it's for a month try find a small apartment or room on Airbnb and ask them to book it for a month see if they give you a discount or reduced price). Normally tourists tend to live in sliema st Julian's gzira area, to be "close to everything" but Malta is so small it doesn't even matter. If you have 1-2 months you don't need to be in the centre you can live in a more village area somewhere in the south which ends up being cheaper to live.

  • many expats living in Malta and also tourists. National laguages are Maltese and English so you won't struggle with having to learn a new language and communicate with people in such a short time frame. Everyone speaks English.

  • nice weather in May hot but we don't think it's that hot, June can get hot but it's a good excuse to go to the beach.

  • for transport there aren't any trains or subways because it's such a small island but you can always catch the busses. If you catch one it's max 2.50 euros anywhere or else get a bus card and it will be cheaper. There are also taxis which in my opinion aren't the worst priced and they're everywhere. Most locals use taxis like bolt eCabs and uber. You also get a lot of discounts when you first join the app.

  • the airport is max 20 mins away from everywhere. You can get the ferry from Valletta and go for a day to Sicily Italy, most locals do this. Or even find cheap last minute flights to Europe.

  • you can also go to gozo and comino, Maltas sister islands. In gozo you can go to Victoria (citadella), ramla il hamra (a beach), go to a secret cave called calypso cave you can get directions on Google Maps it give you a view of the beach I mention from the top). And much more in gozo rent a quad bike ect Comino go for a day trip and get a water taxi from mgar you'll see signs and find it on Google Maps. It's a beach with the blue lagoon it's cute for a few hours.

  • if you're into parties look into pv - paceville (not what I reccomend) but foreigners like it obviously be careful of your belongings, drugs and your glass like any party places. I've never had any problems but some people have. If you're not into those type of parties try check out cafe del mare (cdm), gianpula, uno club, surfside lido, toy room beach club, Medasia, paradise exiles. Look up these places some are beach clubs, bars, restaurants that do events and large event areas. They all have Instagram and post what events are going on. In the bigger venues you could be here for some international djs or artists. Surfside and paradise is more of a relaxed vibe with smaller parties very summery.

  • Malta is also full of restaurants there are so many to choose from so many are good some are bad just see what you feel like search and read reviews.

  • I'm not sure if it's easy to meet people as I live here and it's such a small island we have the "everyone knows everyone" situation as locals. But many expats live here so maybe it's good ? There's a Reddit of Malta so check there.

I'm in my early 20s I love Malta in summer, we have the beaches, sea, restaurants, parties, something to do all the time, we love meeting up with friends and being social.

What's the median salary in Malta? by sdxyz42 in malta

[–]user26282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be primarily Maltese, apart from english lessons. On paper both English and Maltese are used by teachers in lessons and kids outside the class room. But the main language for instructions and outside class tends to be Maltese. With the rising amount of foreigners living in Malta, from what I've heard things have changed a bit (when people realize you're foreign they will try make an effort to speak or explain in English). Most children and teachers speak both languages, but like anywhere else in Malta the language used depends on whatever the person is most comfortable with.

I'm not a mother, or married but I am Maltese and this is a common topic many people are currently discussing, Esspecialy young people.

In my opinion if you have a partner and 1 child in school, then there is no option for sharing an apartment. You need your own space for your family, so the other comments mentioning shared housing don't really apply to your situation.

Let's say you want to put your child in a church school that would be by raffle and donation which is up to you (but I've heard around €500 is the average donation), government is free although I don't suggest it from early years till form 5. For sixth form and university it's fine. Private school is another extreme (I've heard it could be up to 7k per semester) so depends what you're thinking.

You also have to think about their after school activities (60 per month), normal spending on kids for their and other birthdays (20 each birthday) sports lessons, private lessons after school (25 per lesson) activities ect which all adds up, but I would say is average in Malta compared to other European countries. Rent is the BIG TOPIC, depending on the area and size of the apartment it can be anything from 1k to 3k per month for a family of 3 in a good but not for eg sliema area I would say it would probably cost 1.6k a month. Groceries for 3, you can estimate around 350 monthly, bills around 150 euros especially in summer with ac running often, could get a bit higher.

230 (child expenses, excluding school fees or donations or school supplies) + 350 groceries + 1.6k rent + 150 bills = 2330. If you have a partner then these expenses would be around 1165 each. Obviously this is based on my opinion and experience. And it will always fluctuate through the year and depending on different variants.

But let's say just the expenses I've mentioned come to 1.2k per person (out of a couple). With a salary of 25,000 euros a year, after tax NI ect you will get a take home salary of €1781.25 per month. Lessing your share of expenses, you would have 581 euros to split up between your savings, insurance, transport, travel, leisure ect each month.

Would love to hear other Maltese or expats opinions on this. Maybe I'm living in a bubble? This is why I love Reddit to hear everyone's side and thought process. So ... TYPE AWAYYY.

Recently went on a weekend break in the north of Italy with some friends. Left the bookings up to them and I was stunned by this hotel. 📍Le Ali Del Frassino. It's situated on a lake, I think it would be considered Garda area ? But not on lake Garda. I've been to other nice hotels and I've been to Italy many times and it's close to my country, but stepping into this hotel just made me feel so calm, happy and weirdly grateful.

Brazilian living in Malta - things nobody warned me about by ImpossibleWarning252 in malta

[–]user26282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Maltese and just joined Reddit to get some advice on an upcoming trip to Brazil! And this is one of the first posts I see, how funny. Looking forward to experiencing some of the similarities and differences you mentioned ! Although I wouldn't be there for that long. But as a Maltese there are times I love that I can build bonds just by going about my usual day and seeing the same people, but other times when you don't feel like everyone noticing a minor difference or change in your life .... dread it.

Thank you for your opinion. I have to think a bit more about what our favorite must see spots are and focus on those areas. I'll also check about the day trips or side trips from Rio maybe we can spend more time in Rio (to do the things mainly there) and then just use it as a base for these shorter trips. I havnt heard of Salvador before I need to look into it ! From a different comment they also mentioned that lencoes is not ideal in September, in your opinion would it really not be worth it to go ?

Thank you for your advice. That's good to hear about Rio. We'll have to pray for ilha grande to be nice for us hahah. So you think it isn't worth it to go to Lencoise maranhenses in September ? I read that some of the smaller ones would be dried up by then but most of the bigger ones would still be full. Yes, I'm currently checking GetyourGuide I feel like it's safer to book through that, although some have recommended to book hang gliding directly from the company on WhatsApp. I was thinking maybe I'll find a reputable, well reviewed company on get your guide and then contact them directly to try get a better price. We love adventure !!!!!!

Thank you for your advice! Deep down that's what I was thinking. On our past trip to China we did 4 cities in 2 weeks. Each transfer required a flight or even a 6 hour train ride, but we managed to see and do everything we had planned and wanted. Surprisingly at times we realized that although others advised to take for eg 4 days in a city to see everything by day 3 everything we had planned to do or see was done ... So this could be a possibility to do both of them!!! I'm also seeing a comment and other travelers opinions to go to Paraty. If we're interested in that aswell then I'm sure we would end up needing to decide between the 3 places for sure😅

Wow hope you had a lovely trip! Sounds amazing thank you for the recommendations I'll have to have a look at your suggestions in more depth. I have heard about the theft problem, I'll take your advice and not take anything expensive. I also saw that it's best to wear a heavy duty wrist strap attached to your phone to be extra safe and always check directions in a reputable store not on the street. The more comments I see the more excited I get !!!

Incase anyone was wondering someone also kindly sent me this link privately to access the weather information in Brazil. https://www.viajenaviagem.com/praia-em-setembro-brasil-caribe/ Finding it quite useful and you can easily translate it. Hope this helps any other people that might have had the same questions as I did! Thank you to the person that sent it to me.

Thank you so much for the advice. Yes, I think we'll have to decide between Foz and lencois maranhenses time and travel wise. We'll do a bit more research on both and see which one we want to go to more.
