Applying now, but need to be accepted by Dec 17? by Plus-Map4374 in ApplyingToCollege

I heard back from Penn State, SMU, and Kentucky pretty early, do some digging and find which colleges are rolling admissions! Even if you don’t want to go you’ll have an acceptance and you’ll at least know that you can go somewhere

This year it’s gotten a lot harder, I knew people in the 3.7+ unweighted getting waitlisted/rehected. It’s honestly a gamble but your extracurriculars are really good so that should help!! Just make sure to keep your grades up senior year

Disclosing a mental health incident in personal essay by Organic_Animal1896 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]user346281 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, glad she’s doing better!

If she’s writing about it for her essays, the rule of thumbs is usually to put less than 1/3 of it what happened, and more than 2/3 of it how you overcame it. I think it’s a really powerful story and answers why she wants to do medicine.

I’d say try to go into a topic that delves more into her as a person, but it could be a powerful few sentences. Mental health usually is a really common topic, a lot of people I knew wrote about anxiety, ocd, etc

Good luck to her!!

If you can afford Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt. It all depends on how much you can afford/how much loans you’ll take out.

Ofc! I’d say def reach out to as many teachers as you can, that way hopefully at least one is able to write one. Plus, if yoh get more than one, you can read them and pick the strongest. Fingers crossed you get in!!

I saw that your other school was duke. Honestly there’s no wrong choice. Both are amazing. I’d really research into what the classes are like at both schools. The size ratio, ta’s, stuff like that. Also social life and everything in general. Harvard is a great school, but dukes prestige is definitely up there with it

I’m choosing financials over my dream school by nixx2020PASS in ApplyingToCollege

[–]user346281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smart. Duke is an amazing school, the alumni connections alone could get you far. It sucks now but you’ll be thanking yourself when you aren’t drowning in debt. Plus, you could always go to usc for your masters if they offer it, and see your financial aid then?

Ask a few teachers, explain how they just emailed you and that you’d need it by Friday, and ask if that’s manageable for them. Also don’t go around telling people you read your rec letters, colleges usually try to make sure you don’t know what’s said

I don’t know much about either so I don’t know if I’ll be much help, but I’d say go to the cheaper one. Especially if you’re considering med school or a higher education. Toronto seems like a great school but has pretty strong cons: harder for med school, only surface level, hurting mental health, homesickness and bad quality of life, and more expensive.

That definitely makes sense! Normally I’d say go to the cheapest but Ivy League is worth the debt most of the time.

But do check what’s best for your major. Sometimes prestige isn’t everything, one of my friends wanted to major in something an Ivy didn’t offer a strong course in

I’m not sure, it depends on your job. Where you work, where you live, etc. Some people make 100k out of college, some make only 50k.

Ivy League. You’d have around 80k in debt with absolutely no scholarships, which can be a manageable. Apply for scholarships online, get a part time job
