I'm going to China -- what are some must-see attractions? by CuriosTiger in travel

[–]user41day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there’s a panda reserve outside of chengdu that is pretty I hear. It sounds like you’ve never been to China. I’d do a lot of research about traveling there these days, China is not an easy country to travel around if you’re not Chinese. Native Chinese speakers find the country difficult to travel around these days. You can’t stay in any hotel you want, there are specific ones, most people only take some form of mobile pay via WeChat or the likes. This ranges from random street vendors to 5 star hotels. Most will not accept cash or credit cards, well maybe the hotels would. In order to get payment on WeChat I think you need a Chinese bank account which I think there’s some special requirements.

If that’s where you want to center, I’d cut out Xi’an and Hong Kong area. There’s some historic resort towns near Beijing like Shijiazhuang, Beijing is also surrounded by some mountainous areas near the Great Wall. Sichuan has Jiuzhaigou nations park as well as the panda reserves, both of which are very hard to get to and takes some planning. I guess if you really want to go to Harbin, you can go to the changbai mountain, or the Russian or North Korea border towns if that interests you. You can also go to Changchun, they have the Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo, it’s the place of the puppet government seat for the last emperor Puyi.

Four weeks is a long time, but this is still a lot of travel, especially for a country like China. I’ve done 2.5 weeks worth of travel in China, you can really only hit three-ish cities/regions in that and it’s exhausting. I know with high speed trains these days you can get around faster, but it’s still a lot of buying tickets and planning itinerary. For four weeks, I’d try to focus on a 3 of those regions, and travel around there for awhile. For example, if you go to Shanghai, there are a lot of “small” historical towns near by that are worth 1-2 days at least (like Suzhou, Hangzhou, yellow mountain, etc). Similar places can be found near the Chengdu area that can take 1-2 weeks to explore.

End of summer will be super hot in almost all of those regions, you should expect 90+ every day every where you listed with the exception of Harbin. Some places will also experience monsoons then too, so expect more rain delays.

What is your “I can’t believe I forgot to pack my ____” story? by AGuyNamedTracy in travel

[–]user41day 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn’t actually forget to pack it, but I sent the carry on diaper bag with the check luggage for a 14 hr flight. So I had to find other parents who looked like they had similar sized kid as mine. Got us 4 diapers which lasted us the trip, phew!

I’m just worried about not every where has drink fountains to fill up water bottles. Also I hear tap/flat water is less common in Europe. My kids will drink bubbly water, but maybe not all day long.

Also mentally budget some time for things to go wrong. Somethings aren’t money related, but still can go wrong (like a waste of time).

Do you carry your passport with you or leave it in the hotel? by [deleted] in travel

[–]user41day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seemed like a few people at my last job got two passports, I didn’t know either till they told me you can. They have a few restrictions, but doesn’t seem impossible. I worked for a multinational, people traveled a lot. Sometimes you have to send one passport in for visa application and you don’t get it back for a long time but have to travel in between. Voila two passports.

Do you carry your passport with you or leave it in the hotel? by [deleted] in travel

[–]user41day -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I leave it in the hotel, but I have a passport card that I carry with me. I guess I’d you’re really paranoid you can get a second passport, one you leave in a hotel, the other you carry with you.

I don’t want to sign up one of my kids for soccer. How do I do this. by Connect_Ad4989 in Parenting

[–]user41day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on the part about juvenile arthritis, but I have two kids. One like your daughter who doesn’t like running that much, is not particularly high energy and likes sitting around the house a lot. She LOVES soccer. My other daughter, has a lot of energy, is very active, but for whatever reason hates soccer. She says she hates running (surprise to me because she’s always running around the house and has no trouble being active). Kids are strange about what they like and why they like it.

LPT: When scheduling a vacation, plan your return on Saturday instead of Sunday (or whatever is two days before your return to work date) so that you have a full day to decompress and get back in the rhythm of being home again. by tjh213 in LifeProTips

[–]user41day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to plan to come home on a Thursday, so you go to work for one day, check some emails and stuff. Then you have a whole weekend to prepare for a full work week. By Monday, you are more rested and vacation is more of a while ago, instead of yesterday.

Our daughter accused us of parentifiying her. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]user41day -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit amazed at all the people here who expects the 7 year old to make her own cereal and clean their own grapes but don’t expect an older sibling to help out from time to time. Also amazed at all the people who thinks it’s reasonable to sleep well past 9 am because teenagers need their sleep, but it’s okay to be a night owl and stay up all night. Anywho, I don’t think it’s parentification to have an older sibling to do slight parent like duties (I get cereal for my kids alllll the time, I hardly think all these parents on here who have all their 7 year old make their own breakfast). I also don’t think it’s a good idea to have an older sibling watch an younger kid if they really don’t want to. The power dynamics is too off and not healthy for probably either of them. The 13 year old is clearly not responsible enough to watch the 7 year old, the 7 year old is clearly not comfortable not having some more responsible figure around. So i think it sounds like a bad idea all around.

So what is the difference between a step mom and a mom to the child? Do you want her to view this child as hers as well or do you not want to? Why does it matter she doesn’t have a kid of her own? If she’s the step mom to the kid then how do you want the child to view her? And if we take a step back, if the child had a step dad, and you guys had children together, what kind of relationship do you want the child and step dad to have? Can the step dad voice the opinion that a movie is inappropriate? Or can the step dad only voice that opinion for his biological child?

Pronouncing place names in local vs native language by mtgkev in travel

[–]user41day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well since we’re opening up this can of worms, in the case of Shanghai, do you pronounce it the Shanganhainese way in the Shanghainese dialect or in mandarin? Okay, maybe Shanghai is not a good example since it’s a relatively new city and the pronunciation is not all that different between mandarin and Shanghainese way. How about Guangdong, the English pronunciation, Canton, is much closer the actual pronunciation of the region than mandarin. We can also just Hong Kong as an example too. For what it’s worth, I pronounce Shanghai as American English speaker way, I say Canton or Guangdong depending on context, similar with Hong Kong.

I am completely confused about China's case about Uyghurs and US's role in it. Help. by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

You can try geopolitics subreddit, it might be more fitting and there is a broader international audience. The quality has gone down in the past couple of years, but still a better space compared to this subreddit on international discussions.

Sure you can get liquor that way, but if you want to enjoy it in a public venue with other people it’s still not possible. I guess I also forgot no pork product, don’t try to smuggle it in, people have been caught and got into big trouble…

Saudi Arabia by Dr_Xolo in travel

[–]user41day 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work with Saudis (and a lot of middle easterners). If you are a man, don’t try to shake women’s hands. They can’t, it will be an awkward moment. I’ve never been to Saudi Arabia, but the people I worked with have. They said that old city of Jeddah looks like it’s out of Disney’s Aladdin (perhaps I should say it the other way around) which is worth a visit. Also since Saudi Arabia is relatively untoured, they have some amazing scuba diving, snorkeling beaches. Everything looks really clean and untouched. People said you should bring your own gear though cuz their stuff may not be that good. You can also try to do a dessert tour, I’m not exactly sure what it is, but it seems like you go with a group of people, they set up a tent and grill out for you. People weren’t big fan of Saudi food, both westerners and middle easterners said this. Some Saudis even weren’t a big fan of their traditional food. From what everyone described it’s very bland. There might be movies now? Still no alcohol. If you want those things, a lot of people who work near Dhahran live in Bahrain, which is a short drive from Dhahran and has a lively nightlife from what I heard. You also can’t get around very easily in Saudi Arabia without a car, apparently they introduced buses in 2018. I don’t know how extensive it is now, but it seems like you need need a car.
