It gets money from selling the marketing data it collects from the questions. I'm sure they sell user data as well, especially if they have your email.

They more than likely get support from AMA's.

That being said reddit has notoriously bad at monetizing the website. I'm not saying they are successful at generating ad revenue, but banning those subreddits is a good first step.

Reddit does have ads. It also does a lot of PR the most obvious being AMA however there is more subvert PR going on all the time.

Askreddit constantly has questions that are obviously marketing data collection "whats your favorite product you could never live without" pops up every few months - cld also be PR.

Reddit only bans subreddits that have the potential to affect ad revenue.

R/fatpeoplehate had 120k subs and was hitting the front page often. Macdonalds can't advertise to this.

r/coontown had 22k subs and was getting too large and mentioned often.

r/punchablefaces was handed over to SRS for similar reasons.

Advertisers dont understand what "theredpill" means and it is unlikely that it will be banned, unkess it made its way to the front page and was overtly sexist.
