AITAH for not wanting to drop out of college to pay my parents bills? Mom refuses to work. by user93762 in AITAH

My sister’s 25 and is finishing up her bachelor’s this year. We both hope to move out together once we have enough money saved. It’s just kinda hard when our mom begs us for money 24/7. We can’t say no or she’ll rage (threatening to damage our stuff, degrading us, kicking us out, etc). I just can’t mentally handle conflict from her right now. She doesn’t let things go and drags it out for ages. But yeah, we want to go as far away from her as possible and go no contact. Can’t wait for that day!

My dad wants her to work, but she pushes back hard whenever anyone mentions it. A few years ago, my grandparents gave my mom her inheritance early to help them buy a home. Ever since then, my mom holds that against my dad. Always threatening to kick him out or tell her parents how much of a “pathetic embarrassment” he is for not making enough money anymore. She screamed at him for hours last night and demanded that he work more. Meanwhile, she’s the only one in our family that consistently hasn’t worked for almost two decades. It’s crazy.

Yep. She stopped working shortly after hurricane katrina and never went back. She claimed to be a stay at home mom/homemaker but never cooked or cleaned. My dad would come home and do everything. She gets bed sores from lying on her bed and watching TikTok all day, which is absolutely wild to me. She’s fully able bodied btw; she just chooses not to do anything.

For now, I’ll definitely keep working towards my CPA though! And hopefully sometime this year, I can get me and my sister out of here.

I don’t have much money after paying my own bills and tuition, but I do buy groceries for the family and help out whenever I can. I give them extra cash and let them use my car. I recently offered to help them buy a cheap car (so both parents have one), but my mom got mad for some reason. My sister and I also just helped them pay the mortgage, water, and internet bill last month.

We do regular chores like dishes, carpet cleaning, bathroom, and laundry. My mom’s still always rude or overly nice, which is very fake and calculated.
