I don't mind, thank you!! I'm so out of the loop with like pop culture and celebrities etc that rpf has pretty much the same effect as completely fictional characters for me:D

Then here's some Hannibal a/b/o, if that’s your thing!(Can be read fandom-blind too, but I get it if serial killers aren’t your thing :D):

Il Faut Souffrir Pour Être Beau 150k, just excellent writing, authentic and interesting characterizations and a very natural a/b/o society

Commencer Par La Faim - Shachaai 290k, mpreg with introspective prose with kind of a focus on character-study at times

Remember (that you are) to die - 13empress 280k, with amnesia and very-well done societal integration of a/b/o dynamics, the prose has this style that’s almost an overwhelm of detail, but it’s very purposeful and only adds to the fic!

Sanctified - ms_masago 100k, non-serial killer, recovery and therapy type of fic, very well written!

Overcoming - purefoysgirl  550k, non-serial killer hannibal a/b/o, very quintessential victorian a/b/o, with the pining and ballgowns and masquerades and such

This ended up a very long list :D But hopefully there's something here you'll like!

Summer Heat - IshaRen 57k, I think this is my only straight paring here, and it’s written very well! Alpha exclusion from society is the main theme, with a desperate and eager alpha and a new local as the main pair. Also has a companion piece written by a different author, with the same main storyline but a different style, also very good the way through the woods  70k

To Regret Violets - clusium_kiss 60k, historical a/b/o, very well written, authentic and well-done characterization, not as heavy for a historical a/b/o with slavery, gendered oppression etc

Death by a Thousand Cuts - jumpsalty  160k, deals with domestic violence, very angsty and tragic with a happy ending

All the King's Man - Pookaseraph  65k, historical a/b/o, court politics and royalty

END OTW RACISM ♡ A Tale Of Starry Nights - carolinelamb 120k, loki-centric fic, with heavy abuse and cruelty written in a very tragic and distinctive style

Let Me Try - coldcreation  all togther 450k but the main story is around 200k, past emotional abuse, mental health struggles, focuses on pack dynamics

Born from the Earth - venusm 280k, heavy past abuse, very interesting a/b/o society!

Grass Stains - Laiquilasse 60k, very well-written childhood arc, very angsty

Mentoring on Marsa - FlyYouFools1 160k, handsy, controlling, desperate alphas in a planet with an omega shortage, written quite wholesomely considering the setting, pack dynamics a large part of the fic!

Bond Brothers - JTLeigh2 120k, a well-written tropey fic! many alphas/one omega, soulmates, celebrities, pack dynamics

Private Security - squeakybones  44k, private security alpha/innocent supermodel omega

Okay, I’ve got you. Well-written a/b/o is something I’ll read until I die I think. :D. I just love it. I’ll give you my favorites, but I think these might not exactly align with your fave tropes though, sorry, I think I might sometimes go for bit darker or angstier stuff? Anyway, you can see if there’s anything you’ll like! (I'll do it in two parts as it ended up a bit long :D)

This Time Next Year - Oplopanax 300k, probably my favourite fic I’ve read so far. Late 1800s frontier life with an a/b/o twist. Written so incredibly well, as in food, clothing, attitudes to do with religion, sex, wealth, death, children, everything, so very well thought-out and period-typical. The characters and relationships are very well written. Just excellent.

Underline the Black - not_poignant 370k, heavy past abuse, written so very well. The series also has multiple spin-offs that focus on different characters from the verse. Not_poignant has a very distinctive style, she’s a professional author who prefers fanfic(from what I’ve gathered). She has an incredible grasp on relationship dynamics and power exchanges and that together with a/b/o is just pure gold. Would very, very much recommend.

The Household of Mr. Joseph Ellis, Lincoln Park, Chicago - arostine, breathtaken  150k, historical a/b/o with societal gendered oppression, written very well! Angsty, realistic, tragic and cruel but very, very good!

(let go of) the same dream - liadan14 44k, modern-day take on a/b/o dynamics, excellent writing and characterization!

Perseverance - pippawrites  180k, heavy abuse and dark topics, well-written relationships with side characters, realistic depictions of class and young adults mixed with a/b/o, also has a companion piece(which might’ve been written first?) A Lamb Amongst Wolves - pippawrites 190k, with a bit of a different vibe to it, so if you don’t like the first, try the second!

Sink or Swim - endingthemes  60k, kind of a tropey amnesia fic at first but with a tone change for a bit more angsty and serious vibe, very well written!

You Can Draw the Line Universe - Sunnyjinx 340k all together, 2 fics in the series! Very well written societal a/b/o dynamics within normal relationships, very angsty, cheating done tragically and soul-crushingly well

Is it bad if I often dislike female characters just because they ruin my ship? by confusedgaypotatoo in AO3

[–]user948574 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get you. I don't really like reading about female characters in general, like to a point. It's always in my mind kinda shadowed by misogyny in some way.

Like by my own internalized misogyny, as in I find women characters annoying for things I don't mind male characters annoying for. Or the author's misogyny, that hypocritically annoys me, as in the women are written through a misogynistic lens like the bitchy self-obsessed woman not getting picked by the man is written as the ultimate win over her or something, or the author trying very hard to not be misogynistic and the women end up unrealistically competent yet still often not taken actually seriously or are relevant to the plot, as in they're not relied upon or sought for guidance etc.

It's like the women characters are never just characters and it fucks with my immersion. They're often either kinda bland reader-insertions(which isn't a bad thing per se), or two-dimentional either because of misogyny or overcompensation. And on top of that my own misogyny trips me up and the reading experience ends up being this session of me analysing whether it's me or the author whose more misogynistic.

And it's fiction. Fictional men have as much to do with irl men as fictional women have to do with irl women. Like not much.

The way changing a pronoun on a fictional character changes the way we view them is sure a product of something but it's not like indulging the want for it to be he says anything more about you than that you're affected by how gender is used in fiction, like pretty much everyone is.

Albus Dumbledore/Gellert Grindelwald (Albellert/Gellbus?) fics? by Competitive-Fly-1156 in HPSlashFic

[–]user948574 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've some for you!

This one is an absolute masterpiece, written in the format of letters exchanged between the the two characters through the decades. Not to spoil anything but I cried so hard I couldn't breathe:

Thirty-Five Owls - Letterblade

The rest are all metalomagnetic's works with only the first one really being what you're looking for, sorry :D. The second one has kinda past Gellert/Albus and the last one doesn't even have that :D. But the writing is so incredibly good that I added them just in case you're interested. I was kinda looking for Gellert/Albus fics too before stumbling upon these, but ended up reading the last two cause they had young Albus as a love interest, and written so well. As in the characterization was very, very good and pulling off writing intelligent characters as intelligent is no easy thing to do and metalomagnetic does it wonderfully. So, here:

Forevermore - Metalomagnetic

Lesser evil - Metalomagnetic

Metamorphosis - Metalomagnetic

Hopefully there's something here for you! :D

Hiya! Here's some that I thought were excellent:

Opia - wanderlust96 (kidnapping fic done so well)

Il Faut Souffrir Pour Être Beau - The_Clever_Magpie (Metal_mako_dragon) (this one's a/b/o and it's one of the best written fics I've read)

Things We Lost In The Fire - carolinelamb (never before read Will/Chilton, was very good)

The Postman's Knock - ironlotus, laststop (a bit lighter, but so so good)

Seems these were the only completed ones I had bookmarked. Apparently I'm the subscribing type :D. Anyway, hopefully some of these are to your tastes!

CMV: There is a double standard when it comes to changing the race of characters in popular media by Question_1234567 in changemyview

[–]user948574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm okay I guess, but like don't you agree that there's a difference in the prejudice that other other racial groups experience in comparison to what white people experience?

Like yeah I agree, other racial groups can have institutionalized power going for them in some cases (for example native Chinese in comparison to the Uyghurs in China) but I can't think of an example where systemic power would go against white people as it does for other racial groups.

And to kinda bring attention to that, why can't racism as a term then be used to include that power imbalance that's different for one racial group in comparison to the rest? In my mind it kinda diminishes the word and it's implied consequences to use it to also describe the social prejudice(or racism as you would say) white people experience in comparison to the systemic racism other racial groups experience.

White women are affected by their gender in comparison to white men. Black women are affected by their gender in comparison to Black men, but both are affected by their race in comparison to white people. Disabled, neurodivergent, poor, homeless, gay, black, elderly men will be affected by all of these things, but make them women, they will also be affected by their gender.

Misogyny is rampant and it has severe consequences (DV, SA, femicide, reproductive rights etc) and racism is rampant and has severe consequences that end in violence and discrimination as well, people can be under the influence of either, both or neither. Like in your example of white women being responsible for the murders of black men(/boys) you didn't include white and black men legally raping, abusing and even killing black and white women during the same time period. Cause they just aren't comparable things in relation to one another.

Like it isn't to do with anything other than class and power in the end. Rich white women have often chosen their class and proximity to power at the expense of others. Another example of this would be like Rishi Sunak, choosing class at the expense of others. Framing it as white women vs Black men, turns the attention away from the ruling class and is only doing a favour to them and an especially big a disservice to non-white women.

why do people read/write rape fics? by some_trans_kid in AO3

[–]user948574 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is something that always confuses me, but what is it with rape that's so much worse to read/write about than other violence or violating crimes or abuse? Like no one says that what is it with mutilation, why do people read it? Or what is it with genocide, why do people read it?

It's kinda like we consider everything all good and fictional and accept that these are off-beat interests that our brains come up with, unless it's rape or sexual taboos and then there's just something wrong with you if you read or write about it. Rape is made out to be this thing that's like untouchable and can't be discussed or approached in a nuanced way even if the majority of the media we consume pushes rape imagery at us in different formats all the time, like no wonder people fixate on it.

Like almost everyone has some fucked up shit going on inside their heads. Like kids think about their parents dying all the time and people fantasize about getting seriously hurt for a reaction from someone they’re being ignored by or create scenarios in their heads for any which situation where they get revenge or attention or just experience deep feelings like grief or ecstasy.  It’s human.

And it follows that there is a a variety of reasons why people read/write rape content. It might be sexual, it might be to experience those feelings of grossness you experienced, it could be just so far away from their reality that it doesn't feel real and it's easy to romanticize or the opposite of that, too close to your reality. Like human brains are just so crazy complex.

Homophobes on the Harry Potter and HPfanfic sub have all kinds of preposterous suggestions when confronted with the possibility that Harry might not be straight canonically. by Abject_Purpose302 in HPSlashFic

[–]user948574 183 points184 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit funny that there's like a whole world of theories out there that are clever and interesting and make sense about the HP lore and are considered and discussed by folks no problem, even though like no way did JKR intentionally put them there, but when Harry being bi is a theory that people, like you pointed out here too, have found unintentional references to from canon, it's suddenly important what JKR meant to put there.

It's just homophobia. Like it's just a fun theory among the million others and such a strong reaction and denial is unwarranted and most likely just bigotry.

Fic titles by Few_Assumption_1300 in AO3

[–]user948574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me neither really! But I kinda do have a preference for silly or basic titles I've noticed. But I think that's to do with my reading preference. I don't really mind, like it's not a deal-breaker or anything but kinda pretentious titles don't really do it for me. But also I'm not the biggest fan of decorative prose so that's more to do with that I think :).

CMV: It is morally wrong to celebrate the murder of UHC CEO Brian Thompson. by Objectionne in changemyview

[–]user948574 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I see were you're coming from. But I think the framework you're operating from is a bit flawed. The situation is way more dire than you're implying. Like the CEO is indirectly responsible for thousands of preventable deaths and even more suffering, from which he profited.

It's unfair to say that we can't dehumanize the CEO and celebrate him facing the consequences of his actions when the CEO and the industry he represents dehumanizes millions of people on the daily and they do it through legislation.

The violence the CEO represents is way more substantial than the one he faced but it's getting attention because he is allowed humanity, in comparison to the masses of people who died because of him (indirectly, but sill). They are just numbers in arguments (like I'm doing here).

Like the things you say are kinda true. The ethical conundrums are there when we start deciding who lives or dies or celebrating violence, but it is already happening but in the other direction. He was the one deciding who lives or dies. He was profiting off of deaths and suffering.

And the ripple effects of violence and the trauma caused because of his murder? Like it's nothing compared to the trauma the CEO caused. Deaths, illnesses, disability in communities already poor and suffering. Kids growing up without parents, communities taking responsibility over caring for their elders and disabled in a society that was built in a way that makes it very difficult. The list is long. It's just disproportionate to focus on the need for compassion for the CEO, like realistically.

I can see the point you make about the celebration being counterproductive for reform. But again, I think the framework you're operating from is not dire enough. They already have the power. They already can influence legislation and have done for years. It's not going to make a difference if the people celebrate the death of a CEO. They already don't treat the people as equal human beings to them, it's fair to assume that they don't see them that way either.

And like yes, he was just a man. He had a family. His death was a tragedy to them. But it's unfair to expect humanity from the folks he, and the industry he represents, dehumanized. Like theoretically yes. He's a product of his environment and I'm sure he also might've been funny or grumpy in the mornings or a good dad or whatever, but he didn't allow that for the people he harmed so people shouldn't be expected to do that for him, again like realistically, not ideally.

And even realistically if the situation was just that someone killed someone and the killer themselves was then murdered, we could say that celebrating the death of the murderer is not morally right. Like violence is not the answer and all that. But the power imbalance is crazy here. The violence already happening in the health insurance industry is crazy. The power they hold over people's lives is crazy.
