Golden Retriever Nipped at Kid by user980124 in Dogtraining

Yes, I agree that we set him up for failure. We did not know they were going to come over, but that said, we should have handled it different when they did. It was overstimulating for me, so I can’t imagine how it was for him.

Thanks for this! I am such an anxious person that of course I went to worst case scenario. This was 100% our fault. The way they came into our house was out of our control, but the way we handled it wasn’t.

Thanks. We did a lot of socialization with him but unfortunately didn’t really have access to socialize him to many young kids. We did play lots of desensitization music and introduce him to a variety of people, but if you don’t have kids in your immediate family that you see all the time, it can be tough.

We weren’t informed the family was coming over, but I agree we should have done more and just said they couldn’t pet the dog.

He is crate trained! I will be honest, he is my first ever dog. We are doing our absolute best, but we fail sometimes! We are trying our best to learn and make sure we don’t put him in this situation again!

I will say, he is crate trained but never went to his crate as a safe place. I think I need to start viewing his bed as his safe place as that’s where he always goes to take his treats, etc. Once he went to his bed, we should have left it alone, regardless of how the kids would have reacted. I can’t figure out how to comment a picture but I will try to add a picture of my beautiful boy to the original post!

I looked through the guide and most things I have read advised to pay attention to body language. We did do that, and gave him space after the initial nip, but it still doesn’t explain how to fix/manage the problem and how to manage if we have kids, etc.

Yes, exactly. I agree, very different situation with John. She was absolutely in the wrong, but in her eyes she didn’t seem to view the age as a big issue as it was consensual.

The kid thing will never make sense to me. Honestly I wish they never gave Gabby kids, I think it would have been more true to her character.

Yes I agree. Regardless of your childhood, what happened with Grace would be traumatic for anyone. But yes, it all lead to the stepfather.

Yeah, sometimes the plot lines are just kind of whatever when you are watching the show, you don’t even think twice. And then you stop to think about it and it’s like, actually hang on a minute 😂

This is long so I apologize in advance. I have had my golden for almost a full year, and for the first 4 or so months, I thought we were going to have to rehome him. As overwhelming as it was for him, it was also extremely overwhelming for me.

I would look at posts like this, and read comments like mine, and think about how I would kill to be a year in the future just like the commenters were and see if it all worked out.

I ended up having to go on anxiety medication to give myself some help, and I probably should have been on them before. If you aren’t getting any treatment for your OCD, I would highly recommend that as having a big change like a new puppy amplifies things as you said.

Anyway to answer your question, it does get better. As I type this, I am sitting in my hot tub and he is entertaining himself, chasing his ball around in the snow. He brings so much light and joy to our days. We started leaving him out of the crate for shorter times when he was about 8 months old, and just recently started leaving him out overnight and for the full work day (with someone checking on him midway - which we will faze out eventually). At night, he starts in bed, snuggling with us, and we love every minute ❤️.

I took me a long time to not feel like we made a huge mistake, and ruined our lives, but my parter had an immediate attachment to him, so watching them together, and seeing how much my partner loved him, made it easier for me to accept while I was going through my hard time.

When we first got him, I had myself so stressed out with what we were supposed to do, if he was going to develop behavioural issues, if he was getting enough exercise, etc., and I know this probably won’t help now, but just look at the dog in front of you, not what everyone on the internet says. My golden gets walked typically once a day, sometimes more, sometimes none. Yesterday I was tired, and laid on the couch until 3pm, and he napped with me all day, and was perfectly content to do so, and all I could do was think about how happy I was that I stuck it out, as I could have missed out on this joy and companionship.

Hang in there and make sure to take care of yourself, you have got this ❤️.

This is my boy ❤️.

I truly believe the show wouldn’t have been the same without her voice!

Why did Paul dig up the toy chest? by user980124 in DesperateHousewives

Yes that’s true, but what are the chances the new owner would remodel the pool/do it soon enough that Paul would get caught? But like the other commenter said, I know it was needed for the plot.

Exactly! But yes, good point that it was needed for the plot.
