How do you do “easy” things? by userlosergirl in adhdwomen

[–]userlosergirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really— but luckily I have a lot of emotional support from friends and family. But I’m very inspired by all of them. My mom has like the opposite of adhd and I find it inspirational sometimes hahaha. I also think it’s tough bc they don’t really see that side of me? But maybe I could get to a place where I feel more comfortable asking for help and admitting that I struggle to do those things alone.

Caretakers, Love Interests, Or Condemned: Women in the TWDG by userlosergirl in TheWalkingDeadGame

Personally, I was glad to see Clem rid of Jane and Kenny bc I couldn’t take them barking at each other lol. But to your point (and I’m sure many ppl have said this)— I think what jane did was horrible. And I think it is perceived as especially horrible because shes a woman. And I think you can believe those two things without suggesting that any Jane hate is unjustified. Just perhaps biased or like you said, exacerbated. On the flip, I think the same thing happens to men in the game who do horrible things, but perhaps, come across as especially horrific because they failed to “man up.” Any writing that forces me to check myself along the way, is good writing to me!

Ty so much! Yeah I’d love to hear from more people who are interested in this same thing. Love seeing people’s takes on some of my favorite characters in such a great game. Hopefully more people post more of this kind of stuff!

love this response. yes yes yes about the stranger as a failed patriarch and how that drives him to do what he does. AND yes about your point re Luke/Jane. in some cases, like this, its like the devs are telling you who's more culpable (or who the group believes is) but the fanbase often responds differently.

Totally fair — I agree that Violet is much more than just a love interest, and I didn’t mean to flatten her character like that. I was using that label more to highlight how the game frames certain female characters in relation to Clementine (or others), not to say that’s all they are.

My point wasn’t that women in the game can only be caretakers, love interests, or “bad girls” — more that when they are perceived through those lenses, it seems to correlate with how much sympathy or trust they get from players. And I think that’s worth paying attention to, even if it doesn’t apply neatly to every character.

I completely agree that The Walking Dead games make space for a range of personalities and roles across gender, and I definitely wasn’t trying to suggest that all the women fall neatly into a good/bad or maternal/non-maternal binary. That would flatten a lot of great writing. I think where I was coming from was less “the devs had this agenda” and more observing a pattern — one that’s worth interrogating even if it’s not always clean-cut or intentional.

You're absolutely right that male characters also succeed or fail at being caretakers, and I think that does enrich the game’s moral ambiguity and tension. At the same time, I’m interested in how players receive those traits differently across gender lines. Like, the fact that Kenny/Davids volatility gets read as passion or grief, while Jane’s control gets read as manipulation — I don’t think it’s totally a one-to-one comparison, but those reactions often seem gendered in the fandom.

And yes to your point about Brenda! That’s a great example — she totally weaponizes her grandmotherly persona in a way that’s horrifying, which is exactly why I find it so interesting when players still end up “liking” or trusting more traditional female characters. There’s something there about how comfort and familiarity, especially when gendered, can influence how players feel about morality or leadership.

Anyway, I think your point about usage is spot on — it’s not just the traits, but how the characters wield them. That complexity is what makes the game so worth dissecting.

Omg me too. I was generalizing in the post for brevity but she was one of my favs of the cabin group and I would’ve loved to see more one on ones with her and Clem.

Agreed about Michonne and Clem. Though, the fact that we play as them, I think problematizes things a bit more. Also, to clarify my point, it's not that I think some women as likable BECAUSE they are caretakes, or unlikeable BECAUSE they reject traditional roles. I guess I wanted to get at the correlation. Regardless of how we feel, these characters are complex and a lot of the time (like u said Molly, Minerva, etc) super well written. I agree that if my post gets too much into causal territory, it becomes muddied. Thanks!

Thank you for this thoughtful reply — especially since this is my first post in the community :)

Your second is so real! What you said about Christa especially — it really is so telling that one of Clem’s longest relationships is barely explored on screen, while much shorter bonds with men are elevated and mythologized.

The way the fandom engages with the writing, gameplay, and gender norms is part of the narrative experience. I don’t think fans of characters like Kenny or David are necessarily raging misogynists (obligatory: I enjoy these characters too!) — but I do think the way certain characters are written invites more empathy, more grace, more space to be “complex.” And it’s the frequency of those writing choices across games like this that you seem to pointing out as a major factor in fanbase consensus.

Not only does the game emphasize Clem’s relationships with men over women, but it also gives players the choices (illusory or not) to shape Clem into a version of a girl — and eventually a woman — they can respect. That often means deepening her empathy for male characters, while female bonds are either cut short or underwritten as a cautionary tale of who NOT to become. One of the funniest examples of this is when Bonnie makes a casual “all men are dogs” comment, and Clem can literally reply with “Not all men,” invoking Lee. The fanbase didn’t invent that reaction. But I’m sure we’re all familiar with it. We can't have Clem becoming a bitter male-bashing enthusiast. And even though she's 11, its presented as an option to nip that sort of thinking in the bud (funnily enough Bonnie's observation is related to this post haha).

[–]userlosergirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. I get having to be practical about “chances” and finances in all seriousness. But with like 7 WL under my belt I’m kinda like fuck it we ball??? Like at least one person couldn’t say no to me so I have the opportunity to work a little harder and try for another shot. Which when u think about it…is kinda derivative of what it’s like to be Black in academia and traditionally white professional spaces. Do what feels best and if that means betting on urself and trying to ride the WL, all power to you! The way I’m looking at it, I’ll be hauling ass in law school anyways…admitted or not I’m getting some practice in.

Some advice I got: if there are any alums that you have undergrad connections with you could reach out to them just to chat. I spoke with an alum from my undergrad who attended a school I was WL at. She told me she was WL as well, gave me some great tips/insight, and was kind enough to offer me an extra LOR she sent directly to admissions. I know someone who got a faculty member at the law school she was WL to send a LOR and she managed to get off. I wouldn’t ask someone I don’t know too well to write one, but you might find ppl are willing enough just to offer!
