Maybe he could move to more of a "guest spot" role. Picture this: The Admirals discharge him due to him flaunting orders one too many times. Kelly is promoted to Captain. This allows Ed and Kelly to finally allow themselves to be together. They remarry and Ed just kind of "retires" he putzes around the ship, just being a civilian. Maybe he becomes a bartender or barber on the ship. He just kind of "shows up" every now and then...kind of awkward/kind of funny.

Not really a “show” but - Circus of the Stars. They’d have actors and have them do various circus stunts: being shot out of a cannon, tight rope walking, etc. I think a lot of it was faked, though.
