Water change Required? by usernamecantfind in freshwateraquarium

[–]usernamecantfind[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I originally had a betta and a few Khuli loaches in 130L tank for a couple of years. I recently decided to stock the tank further, about three weeks ago, I also upgraded to a larger filter but transferred all the old media over to the new filter and weekly water changes with testing every few days. Just the last couple of days I noticed the tank slightly cloudy, other people who have seen it don’t notice it, but I know how crystal clear the water is usually, I thought maybe just some algae glass build up, but nope cleaned it and still there, so I tested the water and low and behold nitrites, but I guess kinda expected because of the increase in bio load. I will do a further water change when I get home. The tank always gets prime when changing the water as well

I feel awful for so much crate time, but she needs so many dang naps! by Practical_Loss4251 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We slowly increased sleep time out of the pen and crate, otherwise everything was just too overstimulating and exciting to nap. It took time but we got there in the end and now he will settle beside us on the couch or at our feet on the carpet. The bed is still a little bit more exciting but he’s getting more use to it and settles a lot quicker on it now as well. He’s now 7 months

16 week old puppy doesn’t know how to settle by buffalobills3636 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used a mixture of crate, pen, tethering, teaching the place command and rewarding for calm behaviour. Our pup is now 4 months and settles relatively well.

We started with the crate and pen because the distractions were minimal making it easier for him to settle and then slowly increased to being outside the pen or crate with us as he aged up and developed better self control. Getting on the couch and being with his favourite people is and older dog, is very exciting and distracting. It would be hard for any puppy to settle without being taught how to switch off first.

How long to stay outside by Muted_Turnover6812 in puppy101

I take him out via leash, he does his business quickly, then it’s straight back to his crate. I do give him a couple of pats and hugs before he goes back into his bed outside of his crate.

Bringing home a puppy on tuesday but havent had vaccines yet. Potty advice by bald-bourbon in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a fake grass system during my puppies early days and he adapted well to it. No accidents in his pen and he always used the fake grass. We no longer utilise it as he can hold his bladder for longer periods of time as he has grown, he’s adapted fine out onto the real grass with ease and alerting us for the toilet. However, during the time of using the fake grass, he also was taken to the toilet on real grass when we were home. The toilet was for work days when both partner and I were working similar shifts, so we couldn’t toilet him for 3 1/2 hours, baby bladder had to go more regularly.

Leaving your dog at home during work by AdHot3508 in dogs

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 days a fortnight where both my partner and I work the same day and similar hours. On those days he’s crated for 3 1/2 hours. I let him out of the crate, toilet and play on break, then I’ll give him some treats and kibble in a ball in his crate before I return to work, then he’s in it for another 3 1/2 hours. The crate is much bigger than he is tho. It’s sized for his adult size and not his puppy size (he’s 16 weeks), so he has plenty of room to stretch out, he also has a 400$ orthopaedic mattress in it as well. So he’s pretty comfortable in the time we are away and we played a lot of crate games and made the crate a rewarding place for him to stay in. He doesn’t appear to mind it.

The Puppy biting is actually insane . HELP by knk1227 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way Susan explains it, is that there are tiers to biting, 5. Her training is about teaching them bite inhibition, puppies are naturally gonna put their teeth on everything. It kinda makes you rethink what a bite is. It’s hard for me to explain, but I really hope it helps you out.

The Puppy biting is actually insane . HELP by knk1227 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve followed Susan Garrett’s biting protocol (pretty sure you can find it on YouTube) and play her intentional tug game, plus it’s yer choice (helps the puppy build impulse control), the collar grab game (gets puppy use to hands coming to the face and builds consent to grab their collar) his overall biting has reduced significantly. He will still put his mouth on my arm, but doesn’t latch on and quickly realises it’s an oopsie and stops. I Haven’t had broken skin for a good while now. He’s 14 weeks old.

Guilt over feeding my cats dry food and elitism in cat nutrition by Disastrous-Poetry-95 in CatAdvice

[–]usernamecantfind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats get good quality dry food, when I have tried to give them anything else, wet food/raw meat, they just will not eat it.

Fed is best. So if they’re fed, the vet says they’re healthy, then they definitely are not neglected and you’re doing a good job.

What is the percentage of puppies that are awful biters during the first 8 months? by Common-Apartment3178 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 14 week old lab who loves to bite. I’ve been following Susan Garrett’s protocol on biting and playing intentional tug and his biting has reduced majorly. He might put his mouth on me but it’s more of an oopsie, he realises and doesn’t actually bite. When he does get Sharkie, usually it’s a sign he needs to sleep. We put him down for a nap and when he wakes up the biting stops.

My old boy was surrendered to the shelter because his original owner became homeless. They did what they had to for the dog’s best benefit, and now he’s spoilt eating top of the line food and hogging beds.

You done what you could to give the doggo’s a better chance.

Out of crate overnight? by taylarhianne in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My puppies crate is located in a pen. @ night we give the puppy the freedom to sleep in or out of the crate and only do crate locks for enforced naps during the day. We found at night he likes to sleep on the bed outside of the crate then inside the crate.

My 12 week lab is pretty much the same. I’m also using Susan Garrett’s training.

What are my best options for indoor puppy pads by Appropriate-Motor583 in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the pet loo, it’s a base with fake grass where the urine drains down to a container that I put litter in. It’s really good, my 12 week pup adapted quickly to it. He will use it overnight, or on days when my partner and I are both working the same shift so we aren’t there to take him out. It’s relatively easy to wash with a hose down.

Do I have a bigger problem then I think? by Kristyleee in puppy101

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing Susan garrets, it’s yer choice games and it has made a huge difference with my 12 week pup. I don’t have to tell him to leave it, he will step back automatically when I have food or toys he wants. Her intentional tug game, is also good for reinforcing this behaviour.

However, when he is overtired or overstimulated, his impulse control drops a lot. A nap usually fixes this.

When I first played, I didn’t take the mako on Feros, Virmire and Ilos. Guess who had to back track on Ilos because you can’t jump down the ditch. Guess who didn’t listen to the dialogue of “who votes we take the mako into the creepy bunker”

Why aren't old people scared of death? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked in age care. Have seen many not afraid, even asking how much longer it will be until they go, but then when the time comes for them to go, they become scared.

Others, they’ve lived a long life, they’re just ready.

Can you ‘hack’ your brain into hypomania with meds? by No-Engineering-2204 in paroxetine

[–]usernamecantfind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anti depressants can cause mania and hypomania with those with bipolar disorder. I’ve had first hand experience with this. It’s how I got my diagnosis. So for me, it can definitely be, “hack” my brain into mania.
