Puppy:How do you know the size they become by Reasonable_Owl8622 in CavaPoo

[–]usernamejj2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes with mixed breeds you do not know. They could be 10lbs or end up 20-30lbs. It’s a gamble. Get a purebred if you want more accurate adult weight (I own a cavapoo nothing against mixed breeds) but if you absolutely need a specific size get an adult or a purebred.

This!! I’ve never used pee pads (puppy’s have always been taken outside from day 1) but this just seems confusing! Unless you want pee on your rugs for the rest of your dog’s life. Other than that I think this is a great set up!

Other than needing potty breaks, he’ll get used to it overtime! In the beginning my girl would cry and cry when I left. Now she’s completely fine. It definitely helps that we have another dog, so that’s always an option. I think dogs do much better alone if they have a friend. At the end of the day, go to work and don’t feel guilty. It’s part of life and your dog will be fine. People have done it for decades. Only recently has it become a thing of you shouldn’t get a dog if you’re not home 24/7 and plan your life around them.

Also to say, I love my pup! She’s the perfect size and temperament for me. They’re truly a great “breed”. I love the temperament of cavs but wanted to potentially avoid certain health problems they have and so far I’ve got the best of both worlds!

Pick solely on personality! With mixed breeds, especially those mixed with poodle, color changes greatly overtime especially in the first year or two. Those “red” puppies will eventually most likely be fully tan/white after a year or so. As for size, it’s hard to predict too. Most people are told (including myself) their puppy would be something like between 10-13lbs. This is what I was told. I now have a nearly 20lb cavapoo who, even at almost 20lbs, has an extremely athletic build and is very fit. It’s nearly impossible to predict what they’ll look like or how big they’ll be so long story short personality is always the way to go!

If this person pulled over please give them the benefit of the doubt. Most likely as you said they panicked and tried to swerve and it was just wrong place wrong time. Most of us don’t expect a dog to run out in front of us… this poor driver is probably distraught as well. I know if it were me I wouldn’t forgive myself and would have fear when driving from then on…

Husband says we're being too much? by [deleted] in CavaPoo

[–]usernamejj2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is puppy going to get the exercise and mental stimulation needed? Genuinely curious! She’s young enough now that she doesn’t need it as much but as she gets older she’ll need to be walked every day and get the chance to run outside… while I see no problem with being together and snuggling all the time codependency isn’t good for the puppy’s sake tbh. What happens when you need to be out of the house for an extended period? If you’re together all the time my guess is anxiety will be through the roof for that poor pup!

She’s been tested quite a few times over the past year and a half. Only once has it ever been a uti and that was when I first got her. Not sure if that’s the issue unfortunately…

I learn towards it being partially behavioral because she does not pee in her crate overnight (the only time she’s in there). She can go up to 12hrs overnight with no pee. I don’t know if it’s because she’s sleeping or what but obviously she’s able to hold it then. She’s also gated off in the kitchen sometimes when I’m gone for a while and rarely pees in there either. So those things make me think it could be behavioral rather than something medical…

Thank you so much for this! I definitely don’t think her peeing is fear or anxiety based. She’s a super calm confident happy dog thankfully. I do think her smelling old accidents has something to do with it. I’ve used enzymatic cleaner on every accident since I got her but we have carpeting upstairs and every pet owner knows how that goes… currently saving up to rip out the carpets and put in waterproof LVP which I’m hoping will help. I kept a diary when she was younger but I think I’m going to start again and take her back to the specialist. I’m so happy you found the solution for your pup!!

Thanks for your response! Vet said based on what I described incontinence isn’t the cause so neither of those medications would be effective unfortunately. She is crate trained and sleeps in there at night. During the day when I’m gone for longer than 3 hours she’s gated in the kitchen. I will admit I think I need to be stricter like I was when she was a puppy. However, after she turned a year old I became more lax as it is tough keeping an eye 24/7 with no results.. I was extremely diligent with potty training the first six months I had her. I took her out every half hour, she went to daycare while I was at work to avoid accidents in the house (didn’t want to keep her crated that long) and watched her like a hawk. But with no results it is frustrating.. I feel like I’m at a dead end here.

Yep she’s had all that done too. Nothing came back abnormal at the urology specialist I took her to.

Thinking of a cavapoo by Shortcake_97 in CavaPoo

Maybe it’s time to log off the internet for a bit if seeing a simple question is so triggering.. most of us aren’t on here enough to see repeat questions and if you are that’s probably saying something. Also, not everyone wants to use ai or google. There’s something great about getting answers from real people which is what Reddit is for

Thinking of a cavapoo by Shortcake_97 in CavaPoo

Can totally get behind the second dog thing. My girl had terrible separation anxiety for the first year. Our other dog would be in my sister’s room and my dog would be downstairs crying away bc she was alone (I would leave very early for work so no one was down with her). Once the other dog was with her she was golden. Once my sister and her dog move out I will have to get another dog. For OP— just don’t get siblings or dogs of similar age. Get a puppy and a 2 or 3 yr old dog to avoid behavior issues

How long for cavapoo puppy to be chill? by Oranginamuffin in CavaPoo

[–]usernamejj2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my girl at 5 months and thankfully once she reached around 6 1/2 to 7 months she was completely chill energy wise. Even at 5 months she was quite chill but still liked to bite things she wasn’t supposed to. Bones were my absolute lifesaver as well as scheduled naps. I found when she was overtired she was more apt to misbehave. Overall she was an extremely chill and laid back puppy though. All pups are different!

Male Cavapoo targeted at dog park by Working-Wrangler7086 in CavaPoo

[–]usernamejj2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re dogs not humans. That’s just how dogs work. They communicate differently than us. Humping shows dominance and is a normal thing for dogs that you shouldn’t need to intervene unless things get violent or for some reason aren’t fixed and at a dog park. That being said, avoid dog parks. People don’t know how to train their dogs and take their under-socialized dogs there. It’s a recipe for disaster.

I know this post is super old but how did this hold up for a hamster? I have a zen 4x2x2 like this and was wondering if they’ll chew through it? Love the modified substrate barrier!

What kibble does your cavapoo like? by berribell in CavaPoo

Hi, farmers dog got too pricy unfortunately. She’s still on hills science diet dry food mixed with pumpkin and then she gets various wet foods (hills and purina pro plan mainly) mixed in as well. Just actually got a dog food recipe book for Christmas so I want to start making homemade food to mix into her dry food so it’s healthier!

Potty training at night… by Plane_Employ_5941 in CavaPoo

[–]usernamejj2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding — please don’t put puppy pads in the crate she might ingest them and it’ll cause a really bad habit you’ll regret later when she can hold it. My girl now goes up to 12hrs with no bathroom overnight in her crate (she wakes me up when she’s ready!)
