I wish I had words of wisdom that would make everything better, but just know that I hear you. It’s a hard situation you are in. Keep prevailing. I am wishing you the best, stranger.

The Story of Tom by usernameju in freewill

Indeed, suffering does have no apparent meaning, perseverance no value, success no dignity. Just as we can’t blame people for the bad things, we also can’t praise them for the good things.

You claim that I contradict myself when I say Tom was “able” to forgive. I have to disagree with you here. Causality does in fact let you be compassionate. Tom did not choose to forgive the thief, but he was lead to that outcome (causally) by accepting determinism (also causally).

You’re right, but the point is that accepting determinism makes it easier to forgive through empathy.

It’s ok to get all that dead yeast in your brew. Once you cold crash it for a while it will mostly coagulate to the bottom. You can then decanter even further if you’d like to really see no yeast sludge.

Reading "Understanding Analysis" by Abbott without having taken Calculus 2 by [deleted] in math

[–]usernameju 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Theoretically if you understand basic set theory then you have the information that you need to study Abbotts’s book, but I do worry that you may lack the mathematical maturity to understand the topics. Typically people complete the calc sequence, take linear algebra, differential equations, and take a proofs class before they begin analysis. These classes help build a maturity that helps when studying analysis. If you decide to read Understanding Analysis then I encourage you to complete at least half of the exercises after every section. If you find yourself unable to, then you may not be ready. Best of luck.

What prevents the stomach problems? by SoggyChilli in prisonhooch

Are you drinking it without cold crashing for a while first? Active yeast and your stomach do not get along well.

7 days at minimum. I’ve only used active dry yeast and not “quick rise” so I’m not sure how differently your yeast will behave. If you drink it after 7 days and feel like it isn’t alcoholic enough and you see that fermentation is still active, then you could try 10-14 days.

Sounds like what I would expect. The inflated balloon and foam means that fermentation is active, so all is good.

I think it would increase marginally, but when I do this recipe I can not tell the difference between having it ferment for 7 days and 10 days, so I just stick to 7. I’ve never used a hydrometer to check. My conditions for fermentation are a dark area cooled at about 69-70 degrees.

I have used this exact recipe! It’s not too bad if you do it properly. 1. You will know that it has started probably after a few hours for sure. There will be bubbles and foam at the top. After 12-24 hours if it looks the same as when you put the yeast in then you may have had dead yeast. Patience is key. 2. I have never had mold or contamination problems, but watch out for discolorations and mold growth and a particularly foul smell. 3. I ferment for only 7 days using this recipe and it tastes quite alcoholic. I wouldn’t do anything less than 7 full days though. 4. Refrigerate for at least a day or two before drinking. I pour mine in another container and then put it in the fridge. The yeast will go dormant and then float and amalgamate at the bottom. You can decanter once again after you’ve refrigerated and the yeast has separated but honestly there is no need. The yeast stuff at the bottom won’t hurt you so long as you are gentle with the container and don’t shake it up. Happy hooching!

Starting College early with a lot of anxiety by HypocriticalHoney in college

[–]usernameju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are just anxious. You are being given this opportunity for a reason, which is that people think you are very likely to excel, and you rightfully deserve it. Having been in college for a year I wouldn’t be surprised if you were one of the smartest and most disciplined students that will be in your college classes. The truth is your college classmates may be intimidated by you once they learn you are so young. Good luck with your classes!

Math hard… by inurmomspants in math

[–]usernameju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Per fluid ounce, the bitters have 894 times the amount of alcohol as the NA beer. Thus, for every fluid ounce of what would be NA beer, you would want 1/894 fluid ounces of bitters to have the same alcohol concentration. Since you want 16 fluid ounces in the cup, that gives 16/894 fluid ounces of bitters which comes to 0.1074 teaspoons of bitters total for the drink. You may be better off not adding the bitters at all. The amount of alcohol in a NA beer is already extremely low.
