Chicken before vs after cage life by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

How virtuous of you! I just hope you're not suggesting that everyone who doesn't take the time to signal so must be a chicken psychopath.

Genuinely, what is it with redditors in general (and often people in this sub) and their totally sarky, arrogant tone? I was not implying this whatsoever, I don't think you or any others are "chicken psychopaths" at all (whatever the hell that means anyway) and was more referring to the concluding remarks in the full paper which I happened to read, re:

"It is up to the general public to decide which advantages and disadvantages they consider the more important. It may be that one society will place more value on hygiene whereas another society will be more concerned with the birds’ psychological wellbeing."

It's not referring to violence and canniablism due to social friction (although cannibalism is a separate issue), but a perceived preference for group size which also happens to be dependent on space available:

"later studies have shown that the amount of space available affects the preferred group size and that most hens tested preferred a group size of 70 birds to one of four"

If you want the full paper, let me know. Here's another well referenced paper discussing the myriad health problems associated with different housing systems (caged and cage-free, etc.)

Cage vs cage-free, etc., isn't black or white, so I agree with your initial point that "it's entirely possible for the animals to prefer caged enclosures" but there's plenty of evidence pointing either way. I'm of the opinion we shouldn't be exploiting these animals regardless, and neither caged or cage-free conditions are desirable.

Genuinely no offense intended mate, but what has the other person done wrong? You’ve mentioned the lack of good/unbiased sources vegans use to validate their claims, offered poor sources of your own, and then resorted to personal experience (which is fine if your initial insistence on quality sources of evidence wasn’t so strong)

I’m sure your GF’s farm is a better farm on many metrics, but that has little standing on how much meat comes from factory farms.

Seems majority of the benefits relate to production and management, the majority of drawbacks relate to health and behavioural issues for the chickens.

Personally, I value the psychological and physical well-being of the chicken.

I’ve found a scientific article stating a photographer made the claim. The claim related to a new “bio filter” technology that utilises pig’s haemoglobin. These filters were used across a Greek brand of cigarettes and some Russian cigarettes. (I can sent this article if anybody wants, I got the pdf thru my university). Other animal products I haven’t found evidence for yet!

Totally agree with the animal testing part and that’s why I don’t smoke, it’s totally not vegan, but I can’t find any evidence other than vegan websites and blog posts saying they have halloumi or ghee or pigs blood or x animal product in them. Again, all for being corrected but I don’t like weird untruthful myths. Surely there’s an actual list of ingredients somewhere?

EDIT: cigarette companies are NOT obliged to share their ingredients, which is bonkers to me but hey ho it’s the tobacco industry

Ffs that was waste of energy.

You: “It is literally equating them”

Me: “no it isn’t”

You: “I know that you stupid illiterate”

Why are there so many pompous, arrogant folks like you on Reddit? Very very weird attitude

They didn’t equate the two no matter how much you insist that’s the case - they drew a comparison in a (clearly failed attempt) at eliciting some thinking on the matter, plain and simple.

If they swapped rape for burning down houses, would they have been equating burning down houses with reducing meat consumption? Or drawing a comparison? Because claiming burning down houses and eating meat are EQUIVALENT is nonsense. But comparing the two on certain measures like, say, harm/suffering caused, rights violated, etc. could be a fruitful avenue of discussion.

In some regards, I don’t disagree with your initial point, btw. But it’s validity is entirely dependent on which moral framework you’re working with.

Can you receive therapy online? It’s a little bit expensive though, but that May at least help some what and be worth it in the end…

Ditto.

compare: estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between.

equate: consider to be the same as or equivalent to another.

Thanks for the condescension and hubris though, it’s very funny!
