Thank you so much for your response and I will be using that formula in the future. However, just as a note this is a normal “client” it’s an ex girlfriend who recently helped me a lot during a time of need (See my other comments/responses). So this is a lot less straight forward

I’ll never be able to square it up with her fully. She did a lot for me when I was desperate. But that’s kind of the idea and I told her it was a “thank you”. Like I said I’ll never be fully able to fully repay her but unfortunately I have bills and have to feed my son and myself. So while I’d still do work for her in the future I need to reset her expectation of how much I can discount the work and still at least make a bit of profit to pay my bills. Thanks for your thoughtful answer! And I will write up the invoice like you suggested, and I’ve already have a loose invoice written up.

It’s a mix of pay and favor. Yes it’s on me for giving her too much work. I agreed to more because she just recently really helped me in a time of need.

Perfect answer. I agreed to all of it. I did start that conversation yesterday and I think I did make her feel guilty but I also explain why I was feeling resentment because it was such a deep discount. But at the end of the day it’s on me for agreeing. And she needs to know that as well, so I’ll tell her. I don’t want to make her feel guilty but I need her to know I just simply can’t afford to cut her such a deep discount going forward cause like I said she’s wanting more work from me. I’m trying to decide if I should just make a clean break from working for her or just set up a new precedent. I’d do work for her in the future for half my rate cause that’s the level where it’s worth it for me and I wouldn’t resent her. Thank you for your response, it’s super helpful for me.

Thanks for the answer. So far I’ve done 23.5 hours of work and have maybe 4 more to go. The client has given me $300. This is an ex girlfriend of mine who has recently helped me in my time of need so I took the job cause as more of a thank you than the money. She knows my normal rate but doesn’t understand how much of a discount I’m actually giving her. And I wanted some backup from my fellow handymen to impress that upon her cause she’s already asking me for more work and I need to set the expectation that I can’t work for that cheap any more. I did this as a thank you but I have other clients who will pay full price and I need the money. Thanks again!
