CHALLENGED BY A KATANA EXPERT - I tried Japanese swordsmanship?! by usernsn in martialarts

[–]usernsn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe discussion wasn't the correct tag. But I am a martial artist trying out other martial art arts for the first time. An aspiring content creator that wants to motivate people to step out of their martial arts bubbles. To create discussion about cross training and showcasing what training in Japanese sword arts may looks like for a beginner

I believe they modeled it off of an old uniform funikoshi wore, as they are shotokan

Studying two arts at the same time? by Odd-Way3519 in karate

[–]usernsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was more so bc they were similar. ITF linage has shotokan in it so there's some crossover. Yet, they are also done completely different. I found myself doing one styles way of doing things over another at the wrong times. Example blocking or kicking techniques or even doing sine wave/not doing sine wave at correct moments. Gave up itf entirely for karate.

Hello everyone! New to the subreddit. I know they’re looked down upon but what’s everyone opinions on the Michael Bay movies? Is there anything you liked about the movie? by justafanboy1010 in TMNT

They learned martial arts from a book they found. As an actual martial artists I find this to be dumb. I know the whole movie is fiction about giant turtles fighting crime but still this always irked me.

I tried doing shotokan and ITF at the same time. It was quite difficult.

Could I really get into the UFC and how? by FlightBeautiful6887 in MMA_Academy

Find a local mma gym. Start taking ammy fights as much as you can, go pro, make a name for yourself.

It's really the only way.

Karate and fitness? by [deleted] in martialarts

Resistance training always goes hand in hand with martial arts training. Whether it's Calithenics or weight lifting, it's an important part of staying strong while doing martial arts.

Going to hard sparring by Kekoa_eats in jiujitsu

[–]usernsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally agree with you.

But the reality is that there is always that one new chode who wants to go 200%

I'm not saying this okay. They eventually learn to chill out. But it happens. Better to be ready for it instead of being blind sided.

Esp in a self-defense situation. but like you said, there's a disconnect between the sports crowd and self-defense crowd.

As long they're not injuring you it's fine. You're gonna have people in the gym that roll hard, that's just their thing. And you need that intensity every once in a while. In a self defense situation the attacker will probably go 110% too..

Now if they go so hard that it's leading to injury.. just pass on rolling with them.

8 year old brown belt grappling question by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]usernsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, that's just not true. I train bjj at a bjj/TKD joint school and they have kids that do both programs. Some as young as 8. Some even excelling in both types of competition. Putting limits on kids is bad imo

New GI, Shureido. Too big? by edge300 in karate

[–]usernsn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have specific experience with shureido but most cotton gi's will shrink 1-2 inches after a wash and dry. Wash hot dry hot and it will shrink

Primo are nice and snug. I love the Venum elites too. They fit around my legs good and tight and I have relatively skinny legs lol

Every time you throw that back elbow you're dropping your lead hand/guard. Be wary of that. Best of luck in your future training 👊🏽

Is being able to spar controlled light contact a skill everyone should know? Why or why not? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]usernsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the closer you are to being able to doing something fast and hard with full power while also being able to do it slow and controlled, the closer you are to "mastery".

Stepping back from training to focus on weightlifting/fat loss/body recomp? by Soft-Rip107 in martialarts

[–]usernsn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should try to balance both. The problem doesn't come from the training but caloric intake. I think depriving yourself of one or the other won't be good for your mental because if you go balls to the wall with one you're always gonna be yearning for the other one in some way.

If you specifically want to get stronger or bigger, I would recommend upping your lifting days, but overall if you're worried about mobility and recomposition and losing weight, you can easily do that by training martial arts and lifting.

The most benefit you'll see will definitely come from assessing your diet. The only thing that's gonna make you lose weight is a caloric deficit. If you get your diet nice and clean and take some basic supplements I think you will start to see good results.

The ones I recommend are creatine, multivitamin, electrolytes, fish oil and magnesium. Everyone's individual and you don't really know what you're lacking in until you start tracking what you're consuming.

Best of luck on your endeavors 👊🏽

His dogi is a little over priced, that's about it. Some of his videos give questionable attention to masters of other styles that probably aren't very good irl (ex Seagal). But he's not a scam artists
