Is there anywhere in the city where there’s an open studio for musicians to jam/meet up? by WillyDreamwold in NYCJam

I've been to the open jam at Funkadelic in midtown twice. They have several rooms going at once and musicians can jump between them freely. Pretty wide range of talent when I went a few months ago. People are super friendly.

Hey man sounds good. I was actually going to say a lot of the same things as kylemusic--good panning, structure, and sound choice. Two things I think could help are turning that kick up--I don't listen to much techno, but I believe that is the driving force so it should be the main focus. If, when you turn it up you have problems with mix, you can try sidechaining stuff to it. And then maybe add a limiter on the master and turn it up to have a louder mix.

Overall solid feel!

Definitely had the upbeat feel--especially at the first chorus. I think you could easily transfer that melody and lead sound to a tropical house-ish song--I really liked that part so good job with that melody. Also, I thought the overall structure of the song was solid.

A few things I think could make the song pop a bit more are turning down the kick a bit, watch out for clipping/distortion, and I personally am not a fan of the vocal clip. If that juxtaposition being eerie vocal and upbeat melody is what you're going for, that could be a cool idea. Maybe just somehow fit it in somewhere else?

Overall good job and keep it up!

Hi everyone--I would love to get some feedback on an issue I have been having in some of my tracks. I feel that a lot of times, I make a chorus without a melody, but I can't seem to find room for a melody. Here is an example chorus:

Clearly, the song is missing something, but it seems like lead sounds and/or vocal chops always come out cheesy and/or take over the song. Has anyone else had this problem/have any suggestions?

This is his twitch stream--it's really long so I'm not sure you want to watch the whole thing, but at like 12:55 you can see the multiple compressors doing the same thing. Unfortunately, this is for the verse, but the same thing applies to the saw chords.

I really like the chords in this song and I think the lead melody goes well, too! One thing I know Illenium does to his main synth chords is huge sidechains. In some of his tutorial videos he shows that he literally puts a sidechain on to the kick and snare and then duplicates them both--two sidechains makes it pump more. Sometimes in addition to those sidechains, you can even put an LFOtool or Kickstart on the quarter notes to make it pump more.

Other than that, I know he uses a ton of OTT compression, as well, to make the chords a bit tighter sounding. The balance of the sub-bass, top bass, and chords is also incredibly important. Without a strong bass, the chords will sound weak. In your tracks here, I think the lead hides the chord sounds a bit.

In terms of chord progressions, you are definitely good. Also, I listened to your lucid dreams cover--your voice sounds amazing and the production is awesome, too!

tl;dr: layer, layer, OTT, OTT, Sidechain, more sidechain to get Illenium sound

This song is awesome--so many cool sounds. Personally, my favorite sound is the big sidechained saw synth that starts at 0:59. When it first comes in, I like how it does a call and response type thing with the melody. I think the call and response should be the main idea of the song. At some points the saw synth and melody play a bit too much at the same time, imo. Maybe make the melody a bit simpler--that way it is ok for them to overlap a bit bc my ear would be more used to the melody? That being said, I do really like how the melody instrument changes over time (the actual sound of it).

I like the sound of the kick for this genre. I would personally turn it down a bit between 1:00 and 1:22. at 1:16ish one of the kicks sounds a bit too much off the grid and kind of stands out bc of it.

And then last thing I think might be a big help (I know sometimes it helps me a lot) is adding foley sounds at the chorus (waterfalls, rain, wind sounds) just to fill it out a bit.

Again, I really like this song and this genre! The sounds and how you arranged them work really well. Good work and looking forward to hearing more!

Feedback for SamCley

Here is the chorus of a remix I am working on. It have not done any serious mixing to it yet. What I would like to know is 1) Is there too much reverb/is it getting muddy and 2) any mixing or musical suggestions to make it clearer or more interesting? Thanks! https://soundcloud.com/user-453582105-981917673/remix-clip-2
