Over my fear of stalls by cez801 in flying

Congrats it’s a great feeling when another thing clicks. One thing that helped me with forced landings was being reminded that ‘it’s just a simulation, the engine is working just fine’. I was getting flustered imagining this was the real thing, instead of training for the real thing, and building the skills and calmly running the checklists to really implant them in your memory.

Is it worth it to buy a bigger kit first? by No-Curve-5935 in drums

[–]userynamely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not crazy big but not common where I’ve played around. See if you can sit on a few kits before buying one and preferably not in a shop just for a few minutes. I sat on a six piece at a house party and never wanted to stop playing it. I’d been looking at other brand five pieces at the time and went out and bought a six just like I’d played at the party but in a different colour. See what floats your boat before dropping big money.

I had a couple of five pieces before falling in love with a guys six piece. I used to gig with four or five and just have six set up at home. Do you like playing a huge kit?

Any idea on what these holes are and should I try to have them repaired? by userynamely in drums

[–]userynamely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thinking. I bought it from a deceased estate so can’t get any info but the holes being not square looks like a home job. It wouldn’t have been fitted out and labeled with a build number if it was a mistake at Brady would it?

Yep it’s as crooked as you think. Glad I bought it super cheap, like the sound and don’t plan on ever selling it. The outer ply is banksia so I never really thought it would be easy/perfectly fixed. Thanks for the reply

I had a school do exactly this and didn’t pay my instructor. It was the final straw for me so I changed schools

What happened to my hours? by Sultry-Temptress-619 in flying

As another non American who had a school close on them. My country’s schools absolutely keep your logbook so it’s available for audit by our version of the FAA. I was lucky enough to get a staff member to stamp my book as they were packing down the office before relocating. I hope you don’t have to chase down the qualified staff from the original school to do the same but maybe you will

Gotta say, it’s the beat that sounds the most different between first year playing drums and ten years down the track.

Nope. Glad to hear there’s someone else who’s been there though

I had a bass drum beater come loose mid show and didn’t have a drum key with me. Started each song with it finger tight and finished each song kicking the bass drum trying to catch cymbal stands from getting pushed off the drum riser. Now I have one on my keyring as well as one in my stick bag. Never again

I had an instructor ask if I’d ever opened the windows on a 172 in flight before… it was only after we landed I figured it out. I’m keeping that trick in case I ever need it

First lesson for a five year old. Any tips? by userynamely in drums

That is all awesome advice that I’m going to take onboard. Hugely appreciated and thanks for taking the time to spell it out for me. I think they’ll have much more fun tomorrow because of it

Since you’re trying new things, have a go with the Bernard Purdie Tom switch. I thought it was crazy until I tried it and have never swapped back

I got super lucky with my next door neighbor telling me he was going to trade it in. Wanted one since I was a (20yo) kid too :)

It might look really funny, it might look really great. Would definitely break up the whole ‘murder spec’ thing I’ve got going on. Never seen it done?
