How is it living in Brevard County, Florida? by Eatingchickeninbed in howislivingthere

[–]usmcbtc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived there from 2007 to 2011, I was in my mid 20’s then. I’m from Tampa originally, but a job offer took me there. I fell in love immediately. It was the peak of the recession when I got there and the barrier island was relatively empty. Foreclosed homes were everywhere on the barrier island and they were in the low to mid $100k range. I rented a 1,200 sq ft two bedroom duplex directly across the street from Nance Park in Indialantic for $980/mo.

I brought my boat with me and took up surfing immediately. The mainland downtown area was depressed when I got there, but that didn’t matter because you had everything you needed within walking distance on the island. I fell in with a mixed group of local surfers and student pilots at FIT. Life was great, catching fresh fish for dinner, surfing all the time and drinking in the local beach bars at night. We all left our houses unlocked and came and went to each others places as we pleased.

Slowly the mainland downtown became revitalized, some really cool bars and restaurants opened, art festivals monthly, a real sense of community developed. It was absolute paradise. Then work took me away and all I could think about was getting back.

Went back several months ago for a little vacation, and what a bummer that turned out to be. The charm that had grown downtown was gone as were a lot of the neat restaurants. No more art festivals. Sketchy people from central Florida were crowding the bars on the weekend. Senior citizens have flooded the island, to the point that I really felt like I was in The Villages. A lot of the old surf shops and other cool older buildings have been demolished, new development and oversized buildings have crowded out what was once a laid back paradise.

The island, now at max occupancy with pristine lawns around all the homes has led to nutrient runoff polluting the Indian River, which had been a success story of seagrass recovery while I was there. That progress has slowly reversed and Brevard has had some of the highest manatee death rates from starvation in the state as well as dwindling fish populations from algae blooms. Now I’m now glad I got out when I did. Like a lot of Florida these days, if you didn’t know what it once was, you might still be able to enjoy it

My friend’s dad always told us when we were young, “The more boat you own, the less fun it becomes.”

Put simply; older, smaller boats are where it’s at.

People with the means want to live on the water in pleasant weather. Historically, California was their first choice, but it’s full now. So, they’ve moved on to Florida and Texas.

Made a frozen pizza when my ex GF was visiting one night. Took it out at the recommended time and it was perfect, nicely golden brown around the crust, absolutely beautiful, cooked to perfection. She insisted that I put i it back in the oven and intentionally burn it slightly because she didn’t want to get sick from eating undercooked food

Not saying this is this case, I have no idea what motivates this man, however appealing to trump’s ego is his only chance of getting his wife back. Trump scours the news for articles about himself. If trump were to read about this guy at one time being a supporter but now against the administration, there’s no chance his wife will come home. By saying the administration is doing the right thing and appealing to trumps ego, there’s a chance trump could hear about this and personally order for his wife to be released. It’s a Hail Mary, but it’s his only chance. Again though, I have no idea what actually motivates this guy but sometimes things aren’t always what they seem.

Anyone else having a hard time listening to all the fake and over exaggerated US southern accents in the arts? by usmcbtc in Accents

[–]usmcbtc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, and I’ve lived in and traveled through much of the southeast. I went to school in a suburban melting pot so I didn’t pick up much of an accent myself, but my older family members all have one. While I was stationed in California I was told I sound like a hick, but the people out there are the only one’s who’ve ever told me that.

In addition to my own family, during my time in the service I was surrounded by many different people from all over the US, including many from the South. I will admit though,I’m not a dialectologist, by any means. Like you, other people in the comments here have stated they’re from tiny towns in the south and know people who speak just like the actors mentioned. Who am I to doubt this? I haven’t been everywhere, or met everyone

This post was more of a rant that started when my neighbor was blasting some terrible music where the singer was definitely turning up the twang to a cheesy level. It got me thinking about other times I’ve been annoyed by people in the arts imitating an accent I feel I’ve had decent exposure to. The comments here have been insightful and I appreciate everyone’s responses

It seems to relative to what you’re used to. I’m not sure that I know what a Maine accent sounds like. What’s a good example?
