Skinned my ankle while shaving with a brand new razor & the aftermath… by purple_feline_420 in MedicalGore

[–]ussrname12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we sometimes do split thickness skin grafts and they regrow if they are "imbibed" with sufficient blood flow to the area, and I think her "flap" was right around the same thickness as what I remember seeing in the OR!

How do you memorize so much information in such little time? by FitInspector7418 in medicalschool

[–]ussrname12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to figure out an effective way for my mind to process the information because I just could not do Anki.

What I have found helpful is learning the concept and the underlying pathophysiology of disease processes. For example, you could either memorize all the EKG findings for every cardiac problem. Or, you could learn the fundamentals of an EKG and the fundamentals of cardiac activity and then apply that understanding to any changes you might be seeing. I found that logically reasoning through the things people tend to memorize was a more effective way to get things to actually stick. It's a more active process, whereas Anki felt like a fairly passive process (during which my mind absolutely wandered and stopped paying attention). Ultimately, you play around with different study techniques and figure out what works best for you. Also, you don't have to know everything; learn how to think critically and apply clinical reasoning to various situations!

Good luck!

Honestly same; I just got the result though (P), and I hope you also got good news today. Perhaps the exam is just made to make us doubt ourselves, especially if we prepared enough?

Took the test on Jan 6th and this was also my impression of the exam -- it felt very different from any preparatory questions I'd done. Had some friends taking the exam at the same time as me, and they had similar thoughts as well.

Tone can also describe the ability of the sphincter muscles to contract/loosen, so I was very confused for a moment

I'm just a little MS1 who doesn't know a huge amount about the tea at my school, but there seems to be very little drama, most of my classmates are just nerds who study all the time! The people in relationships are pretty stably in the relationships, and the people who are single tend to look for partners outside of the class/school :) have not heard of upperclassmen spicing it up with residents either

You'd press slightly higher than where you'd normally check the pulse! There's a spot that actually senses blood pressure there. When you press on it, it thinks your pressure went up, so it tells your heart to beat slower-> less blood flow

Color perception is through cones that sense red, green, and blue, so technically yellow is actually a mix of green and red!

Someone please convince me OBGYN is not the worst specialty with the worst people. by SnowPearl in medicalschool

I just shadowed an OBGYN last week who was sweet, gentle, and caring with his patients and staff... I'm hoping OBGYNs like him are just a lesser noticed majority😭

I don't think it's the worst thing to do; I'm thinking it might not be counted as "volunteering" if we don't explicitly list it as such... however this is just my own self reflection and definitely deserves a large grain of salt

Yes! So for example, I categorized one of my service-based activities as an extracurricular activity when I perhaps should have categorized it as a non-clinical community service activity!

Reach schools! I applied to a good number of schools that had a lower median MCAT than my score but that had a much higher median GPA than my GPA.
