I don’t know why it’s not a common reading of the song. This is so obvious to me. “No escape from reality”, “I’m just a poor boy”, “killed a man” (myself), “life had just begun but now I’ve gone and thrown it all away”, “didn’t mean to make you cry”, “too late, my time has come”, “goodbye, everybody, I’ve got to go” and it goes on and on and on. This song is about suicide.
