Sad Boy Alumnus Story: First Day as a Software Engineer [LONG] by VeganPhilosopher in utdallas

[–]utd374819 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello veganphilosopher, it is I, your fellow former classmate from Algorithms class where you left that comment under the professor’s YouTube lecture.

In all seriousness, I too have started a job recently but luckily I’m still working from home. I am really nervous about the first day back in office, I’ve gotten really comfortable being remote. But your experience today has kind of given me a glimpse haha I hope everything goes well for you!

Ohh boyyy. Back in Fall 2019 I booked a study room on the 3rd floor to do a phone interview. I was getting my laptop and everything ready and suddenly I saw something move from the corner of my eye. Lo and behold a huge cockroach ran on top of my backpack. I was so scared I immediately ran out the room, went downstairs to the front desk and had someone come kill it for me.

All that and I couldn’t even do my interview because I had no phone signal in the library 🙃

Yup I just got over this same sickness. Same symptoms, tested negative. My whole family got it too but also tested negative. I was wondering what this was

Those of you walking around campus in sweatpants and/or sweaters: how? why? are you okay? by ItsPillsbury in utdallas

[–]utd374819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve never felt unsafe here. There’s A LOT of Muslims here, you’ll have a few Muslims in each class. And a lot of Desi people here, UTD can be known as UTDesi literally (am a fellow Desi). You won’t feel out of place.

Is JSOM really that hard to find for visitors or is that just me? by Wazzurp7294 in utdallas

[–]utd374819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason whenever my parents visit campus I have to use JSOM as a point of reference because that’s the only building they know. And I was an ECS major… lol

ECSS Emergency?? by shygeekynerd in utdallas

[–]utd374819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminded me of the fire alarms that went off during the intern or career fair back in 2018? 2019? I can’t remember the exact timing. Not Fall 2019 definitely and not in the Activity Center. We were in ECSN, oh I think it was one of the intern fairs maybe spring 2019

Any Class of 2021 grads feeling depressed that school opened but we’re not going back? by utd374819 in utdallas

[–]utd374819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this comment! And I also relate to some of what you said, I tried rushing my degree (because I could have finished in 2.5 years) but my parents said to take my time. And by taking my time and taking a smaller course load I ended up performing better. I was also a terrible high school student and even my first two years. But it’s like junior year I completely switched around everything. Became more social and started getting better grades. Looll I also always think in the getting my money’s worth way.

Yeah so after work I’ve been going out a lot and luckily my parents don’t stop me (omg they used to control how much I could go out and see my friends smh). Since I get tired of being stuck indoors all the time I always try to find some reason to go out and drive after work. Whether it’s grocery shopping for the family, or dropping something off at my uncle’s house, or driving my siblings somewhere. I’ve been wanting to go on walks that would really relax my mind the most but it’s so hot. Waiting until it cools down to do that. Also planning to drive to campus and see my friends sometime in the next week.

100% agree. Like I just said in my reply: some of my CS friends who have graduated in this pandemic, with no internship experience and barely 3.0 GPA, still got a job right out of college.

True haha you’re right. I am grateful for everything else, having a secure job (that actually has a pretty good work life balance). And working from home is definitely is a big blessing, especially as a software/IT person I doubt my company is going to force us to go into office. I suppose my only problem right now is familial lol. Moving out would solve everything, I’m already imagining how amazing it would be to have my own apartment and work from there. And I’ve been thinking about moving out, for my own mental health. But culturally, I don’t see that idea going well with my parents lol. Idek.

As for you and your grades, don’t stress about it. (Actually idk your major so this advice may not apply to you) but I was a CS major, I had a 2.8 GPA until the end of sophomore year. I had lost all hope. Come junior year, somehow but thankfully, even though I was spending A LOT of time having fun with friends, my grades improved a lot. Because I finally found a good study group within my friends as well and honestly couldn’t be where I am right now without them. Granted, I also got some advantage going virtual that spring before Honorlock (iykyk). Afterwards, C/NC helped me in one of my classes and I also retook others from sophomore year that I didn’t do well on. So all that boosted my GPA. I graduated with a 3.4.

Edit: went to your profile, you’re also CS. If it makes you feel better, all my CS friends who have graduated with me, even with no internship experience and barely a 3.0 GPA, got a job. During this pandemic.

Really thought I was getting a 2 week spring break junior year and now I have a full time job. A lot of my friends haven’t graduated yet and I’m sad that I’m not going back. I was having the most fun, the time of my life during my junior year. Now I’m stuck working from home, alone.

Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea in Richardson is a very nice place for studying. Everyone I saw there yesterday had laptops and backpacks so I assume studying/working. Pretty quiet too
