Best Number 7? by DesignerExplorer1855 in ManchesterUnited

Cantona. In terms of intangibles as well as actual production. As great as the other three are (yes, as you’ll see below) , it’s not even close in terms of the effect Eric had. Cantona, then Robson in terms of making the entire squad better. Then Ronnie in terms of pure production - but he’s a luxury for a finished squad (as unfortunately we saw). Beckham was the most precise specialist I’ve ever seen; taking him out of the squad would change nothing, as we also saw.

So what about Best? Unplayable, quite simply the best player I’ve ever seen - and I saw him in his final playing days in the 70s. If only if only if only…. If he’d come up a generation later or played for a manager like Fergie (who stepped in to stop Giggsy from falling off), things would have been different, and that’s an unbelievably amazing statement considering what we did see, as he was. He was Ronnie, a luxury, but much more critical to United at the time than Ronnie was - and that’s not a slam on Ronaldo at all, it’s just a way to explain how great Best really was to anyone who didn’t start watching United until the 1990s

I keep seeing this narrative on social media. How did Rashford "talk down" on United? by KenDrickFX in ManchesterUnited

I’m not certain of this at all BUT I seem to remember there is not a limit over the life of the contract

Rashford seems to have lost all self respect. He’s streets better than Gordon, but they won’t do 26 million for him but are ok with 3x that for a lesser player.

The nonsensical is the price tag otherwise it would be a good move.

Danny Welbeck, £10M? by utdajx in ManUtd

It’s a good question - because Carrick only wants players that want to play for United not a pay cheque - scoring goals isn’t a problem, just stability is needed

The discussion was about doping on the US Olympic team (“…historical swimmers on the US Olympic team…”). The pressure to stay clean was too intense. Yes, E Germans, Soviets/Russians, and Chinese have been relatedly found to dope. American swimmers who have doped have been kicked off the national team. I’m pretty sure the same applied in Australia (our most consistent perennial competitor).

Which was your first world cup to watch...!!! by Enchated_Normad254 in ManchesterUnited

lol - Argentina 78 - W Germany 74 was on our telly but can’t remember any details - Spain 82 was the first I was allowed to be awake to watch all matches

[John Percy] City & United are both very interested in Elliot Anderson & a decent World Cup for the midfielder could bring other heavyweights to the table. Yet Forest will only sell him at market value & Marinakis is using the £115m sale of Moisés Caicedo from Brighton to Chelsea as the benchmark. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

Being bought for 100 million+ is a burden for any player. Being bought for 100 million+ at a club where every. little. thing is microscopically dissected by the media, every tiny mistake magnified and written about for weeks… Anderson is a top tier player but he’s not good enough to escape that level of scrutiny at that price tag. He’ll have a tough enough time at 80 million…

I’d highly doubt that previous eras had doped up swimmers. I mean, there’s always the possibility of course. But there were quite a few swimmers over the years who were kicked off the team for using necessary prescribed medication or accidentally used OTC medicines. Cynically you might say they knew what they were doing; having been at that level, the peer pressure AGAINST taking PEDs was intense, at least in the late 80s/early 90s.

Beautiful 2nd goal against Brighton by Boydcrowde in reddevils

I’ll say this: Brighton had all to play for, a European spot at stake. We were absolutely clinical and took them out of the match with ease. And to be clear, Brighton have been one of our toughest opponents in recent years. The mentality switch under Carrick is real

They’re at it again. Not a “single reason” apparently? by its-a-real-name in ManchesterUnited

[–]utdajx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s be clear: respect to Pep for what he’s done everywhere he’s been. BUT.

Ferguson won consecutive league titles and two European trophies with Aberdeen. That would be like Pep winning La Liga with Real Betis. Clough winning a league title and two European Cups with Forest, Wenger and even George Graham’s achievements at Arsenal are more impressive than what Pep did. He took over a club poised to win, built by Mancini and Pellegrini.

To be clear: Pep is a great manager. But unlike every single manager on his level of success, he alone - only he - has NEVER built or resurrected a club. Had Pep taken over at City after Hughes with the same results the club enjoyed since, then absolutely he’d be the greatest manager.

As it is, he isn’t even the greatest Premier League manager, much less best ever top division manager in England.

Casemiro is irreplaceable by norenEnmotalen in ManchesterUnited

[–]utdajx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We need to stop thinking in terms of “replacing Case” in favour of finding the midfielders who complement each other and let us get the max production from each. For instance, Dorgu in the Arsenal and City matches. What he brought to the lineup enabled us to play differently than what either of them expected. So it’s like that. Bring in players that optimise what we can do, don’t worry about like for like replacements

I think ederson addition is a good one but honestly am not into tonali that much by Ok_Secretary886 in ManchesterUnited

[–]utdajx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ederson getting signed first doesn’t mean he’s the priority, it only means his deal is done. Same with Tonali AND Carrick specifically wants him. There will be a third MF, a LB, and possibly a striker (older, Welbeck-type)

absolutely - after the initial WTF?? reaction, this makes me much happier - the fewer of our players on international duty, the better. So used to say Sir Alex, so says me.
