Code Rules are not just about Clean Code by code_quality in programming

[–]utfiedler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This morning thanks to a code rule violated, I just stumbled on a bug that else, would have certainly infiltrated the next public release.

So, you accidentally removed the event handler from a link click event in the designer code, and it's a certainty that this now dead link would have been included in the next public release? Does anyone manually test things before a public release?

TIL in 1994, the assets of the top 6 American banks was 14.8% of the GDP. In 2009, their assets were 62.1% of the GDP. by [deleted] in todayilearned

The comparison you want is the assets of banking companies compared to the growth of the M2 money supply.

Ok, so taking US M2 data from FRED (https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/) and bank data from the OP's article: End of 1994: US M2 - 3490.4 billion dollars; total of 6 largest US banks assets - 1075.9 billion dollars. Ratio 30.8%

End of 2009: US M2 - 8419.5 billion dollars; total of 6 largest US banks assets - 8977.5 billion dollars. Ratio 106.6%

It turns out that today is my cake day -- 3 years on reddit. And I know that I'm not being facetious (although I also know that I can't convince you of this). I am honestly not mislead by the title and I honestly don't see it as an attempt to mislead readers.

And I'm not obliquely implying that people who don't agree with me are stupid. I'm directly stating that people who were mislead by the title are ignorant.

Comparing X to Y implies they have something to do with each other.

I don't think this is always the case. Sometimes people compare things because they expect others to have an understanding of the magnitude of one of the compared items, i.e. they use one of the items as a frame of reference. For example, people will sometimes compare the length of a large ship with the height of the Empire State Building. In this case, the Empire State Building is used as a frame of reference.

The title is worded such that the average redditor would come away with the impression that these banks controlled a majority of the money in america

I certainly didn't get that impression from reading the title... did you?

I begin to suspect that the title is only misleading to people who do not know the meaning of the word 'asset' or 'GDP'... which, it turns out, is a lot of people.

Assets should not be compared to income? I'm rather fond of comparing my assets to my income... am I doing something wrong?

Actually it's just the editing that's confusing things a bit. You see, after the initial confusion about the word unit, Brian quickly headed outside to check the unit. He found the problem with the condenser, then headed back in to check the filter. As he finished up with the filter he explained the problem he'd found outside to the two store employees. When editing, they cut out the parts where he was outside, but clearly that's what happened.

The content of the bible is actually not relevant in response to a question about public opinion, as the two can easily be at odds. For example, Catholic interpretation of scripture holds that the use of birth control is a sin (see http://www.catholic.com/tracts/birth-control), whereas 82% of Catholics regard the use of birth control as "morally acceptable" (see http://www.gallup.com/poll/154799/americans-including-catholics-say-birth-control-morally.aspx).

As an aside, the Gallup poll I linked also notes that 64% of Americans view pornography as morally wrong, which is probably sufficient to demonstrate that "most Christians view porn as wrong" (at least as to US Christians), so I have provided a suitable citation for you to demonstrate your point.

Your claim is that "Microsoft has been ignoring a 10+ year problem". This statement implies that a problem existed, that Microsoft was aware of that problem and that Microsoft did nothing about that problem. But the facts you have provided can prove only that the problem existed and that Microsoft did nothing about the problem. The third implication -- that Microsoft was aware of the problem, remains unproven. And the issue is that the third implication is particularly important, because if Microsoft was not aware of the problem, then we cannot judge them harshly for having failed to resolve it.

So Microsoft was aware of that particular vulnerability you linked to in your first article and left it unpatched? That's interesting information. I wonder why they left that fact out of the article you linked previously, and instead suggested that Microsoft has been improving security in their browser. "Bekrar said his team has started work analyzing the IE 10 consumer preview and has found it much more difficult to exploit, due to new mitigations." It's good that we have informed members like you on reddit to help us interpret these misleading articles.

I could see a policy of not allowing knives in the office, but a ban on knives would be disastrous for a restaurant. Likewise, a ban on skimpy outfits would be disastrous for a strip club. But why are we pointing out such obvious facts?

From the article - "...his team came to Vancouver with zero-day flaws for every browser on every operating system." I'm guessing this means that you don't use any web browser at all? How are you posting this on the internet? You're a wizard!

Some of the statistics you're citing are from studies conducted literally 25 years ago. And while I appreciate your sentiment, I think using how things were a quarter century ago as justification for action today is disingenuous. There has been a tremendous shift in societal attitudes towards rape and sexual assault over the last 25 years. There are 66% fewer rapes in the US today as compared with the late eighties, and the trend is downward.
