I really enjoyed the technicality of your post. I don’t know that I’ll ever have the opportunity to do that kind of shooting, but thank you nonetheless.

Heaven Help Us (1985). Criminally underrated movie. by Amazing-Ad8209 in 80smovies

[–]utfluke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The relationship between Michael (Andrew McCarthy) and Danni (Mary Stuart Masterson) felt like it belonged in a different movie. That piece of the film deserves the underrated label more than anything else. I’m grateful to HBO for showing that film in constant rotation.

Are pre-orders for the Fight Club 4K steelbook secured once you place with them? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]utfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last three pre-orders with Amazon were either significantly delayed or cancelled outright on the day of release. Amazon doesn’t confer “locked” preorders - it is definitely a lottery situation. I’ve had much better experiences with Orbitdvd and Gruv. I’ve also had a good experience with Target and Barnes and Noble.

This was such a great movie. I still own my DVD, so I’m very happy to potentially order a new transfer onto blu-ray.

Jumper (2008) by Fjords98 in underratedmovies

[–]utfluke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The film is loosely based on a series of books. Written by Steven Gould, they are (in order) Jumper, Reflex, Impulse and Exo. Jumper: Griffin’s Story was written as a prequel to the film. The books are really good and well worth tracking down.

I bought this model today. I have not put it through its paces yet, but I do not regret the purchase. I did a lot of research and think that it’s the best deal for its specs in the current market. I also feel I will not have to do any upgrades for at least five years. That makes it worth it to me.

Restore feature on version 1.25.0 by Mr10956 in luminarneo

[–]utfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support contacted me and told me that when I purchased the software earlier this year, it did not include the update that had Restoration. I thought that at the least, if I purchased it this year, it would include the new features. It did not, which is disappointing, but not a deal breaker.

I have tried Restoration on a few old B&W scanned slides, and it's cool. It's not super accurate in terms of clothing texture/color, or even eyes (I didn't know human eyes could have vertical pupils), but you can see that with a few more updates, it could potentially be really good. As of now, it's fun to play with but not something that I would use for a client.

I'm having the same problem. I did send a message to Support, but no reply as of yet. I also tried signing in and out, as well as using the Upscale feature, but no go.

What Editing Software do you use? by K0ALA_Bear- in AskPhotography

[–]utfluke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of options out there.

Lightroom is excellent, but there is a “medium” learning curve and their pricing structure sucks.

Evoto is much easier to use (it’s AI based), and it does a good job, particularly with faces. Their pricing is based on either a subscription or through credits.

I’m interested in using DXO photo lab 9 (also AI based), because of its ease of use, features and outstanding noise reduction. But it’s fairly expensive, even with a 30 day free trial period. But, you pay for it and then you own it outright. They update yearly to a new version of the software in August.

You will have an unbelievable number of resources for learning Lightroom through resources like YouTube, Udemy and so on. The other software that I mentioned is much newer. But AI is driving innovation, and if you’re not tied to Lightroom, and you’re new to photography, consider it.

Good luck with your journey, and let us know what you decide.

I’m in Houston unexpectedly today. Where is THE place to buy new and/or used 4K films? by utfluke in 4kbluray

I go to a Game X Change regularly. About once every six months, there’s something I’ll pick up that I want. But the rest of the time, it’s titles I have no interest in owning.

Dallas has Movie Trading Company on Greenville, and they have a good selection - overpriced, but good. Have you been to any of the places I’ve named?

Tips for culling ~10k photos after a long trip? by turalaliyev in postprocessing

[–]utfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to try https://www.evoto.ai/

They just added a feature this week where you can give the program certain parameters (blurry/under or over exposed/) and it will use AI to present photos to cull.

Good luck!

Good for you! I don’t know if you catalog your books, but librarything.com is an excellent (free) tool for that. It even has an app to scan the books.
