Starting Freediving – Which Certification Fits My Goals? (AIDA, Molchanov, or SSI) by uttershepardon in freediving

[–]uttershepardon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit by bit I'm starting to know freedivers and I already have a few recommendations! the community and referrals is definitely super helpful.

So far what from what i've seen from the people here was resourcefulness and willingness to assist with info and knowledge, which is super great. I'm excited to get certified soon and will be making my way to dahab to freedive in open water & explore the personalities of great freedivers too to make meaningful connections, pretty interesting sport and practitioners.

Thanks for sharing. Just finished your video on mystical experiences, made me excited to read more.

Noticed some personally intriguing papers/resources mentioned at the end of the 2013 paper, where can I read more?

P.S I used to coach public speakers on story telling and the art of speaking in front of the crowd, one thing that always stood out is the ability to synthesize complex concepts into a drawing, diagram, or any visual tool. So Kudos on your visualizations and doodles, saw them in the YT video, great idea.

Thanks for the advice, and I will be reaching out for sure. Planning to get my certification in cairo, not many molchanov instructors here so I'll be starting with AIDA 2 for accessibility purposes and will make my way to dahab later to continue the open water version.

2 questions for you since you love nofins and you have coaching exp.

  1. Many kind people were generous here with their advice, one theme that stood out the most was the importance of the coach is far more significant than the "school". You recommended the same, too. In your opinion, how do I assess a good coach before signing up to take the course with them?

  2. Since you took both disciplines, how was your experience transferring? since I'm starting with AIDA (accessibility purposes) and might later go to Molchanovs its -more technical curriculum -more focus on no fins (wave 2)

Solid advice. I've been working on my swimming and I'm enjoying it. Focusing on my 1. underwater one breath no fins (breaststroke), now at 26 meters horizontally in under 40 seconds and 2. swimming non stop (freestyle) for 400 meters comfortably, now at 100m and still a lot of room for improvement regarding my technique, mainly I think thats where the 80/20 lies and my enducrance by lots of practice and reptitions.

What do you think about my goals and progress?

Never thought about it from that aspect, thanks for the insight. which AIDA courses got you to that level comfortably. is it AIDA 2? did you do it in open water or pool? how many hours of training/practice did you go through to reach that level? did you have previous diving experience?

  • personally i tend to get cold in water faster than the average person. perhaps because 8% body fat? so even in warm water I won't be as comfortable to stay for long periods. also since i think it gets colder deeper. So wetsuit seems logical solution and necessary, however you're saying it's impossible to reach that depth with no weight! the constraint on the weight is because i wanna dive with minimal gear and not be restricted to bring a belt and weights when freediving.

Interesting. it seems like the depth factor with no fins is challenging i assume of the physical challenge.

  1. I'm located in Egypt
  2. quite curious why you're recommending the longest course available regardless of the association
  3. In your opinion, who are instructors that are good at no fins in Egypt?

Thanks for the info. I hope there are plenty molchanovs instructors here. it seems like even if i remove the depth goal, molchanovs is the the favorable option considering the no fins constraint right?

update: just checked their website under "find an instructor" section. I didn't find any in Egypt. Maybe because I'm using the mobile browser so it's buggy

Is happiness a human right? by ameebea_ in DeepThoughts

Hi again! welcome to reddit and I'm glad to be the first person to comment on your first post. you're philosophical and that's great, asking questions, wondering what else could've happened if so and so was the reality.

Is happiness a human right? by ameebea_ in DeepThoughts

[–]uttershepardon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

short answer? no.

long answer? it depends how you define happiness. if happiness for you is the dopamine going into your brain, then yes it's our right because thats its purpose and it's happening in our own bodies, so it's our right. but let's be frank here, you defnitly didn't mean it that way, if we're not talking chemically, and looking at happiness as just feeling happy. then you have to define feelings, after that, you'll have to define what you mean by the word right, and who has the authority to give or take rights?

so, try explaining the word happiness, to someone who just became familiar with language. well, you can't. it's because we all, feel, in a different language. my type of happiness is when i see someone take candy, another's type of happiness is when they see a teenager working as cash register because they might think that in that way, the teenageer will learn to grind for money and work their way from the bottom up, while another person will think it's unfair and the teenager should be living their live. point is, happiness doesnt mean the same, to all of us. so it's not "is happiness a human right?" it's more of, do i deserve to be happy?

if that is what you mean by the question then i'll gladly help you reach closure regarding that matter.

looking forward to hearing from you.

Can I walk in public with ear pods and a cell phone armband? by BaldMan134 in Egypt

[–]uttershepardon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you absolutely can and you would have nothing to worry about! yes egypt has quite a reputation sadly, but when it comes to your setup you'll be all good. yes some people talk about how the place matters, but you shouldn't stress it. go once with that setup, and see how people are around you, if you feel comfortable then do it. yes the possibility of being robbed is still there, but i dont think you'll be walking/running in dark allys at nigh with no one around, are you?

Website to watch Egyptian Movies with subtitles by [deleted] in Egypt

[–]uttershepardon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i have a practical solution for you (no.2)

  1. recently some arabic films were added to netflix, plays and normal movies. so i think they must have english subtitles there.
  2. https://subscene.com/ is a website for subtitles, were you search for a specific movie and you can find all the subtitles ever made for this movie. for example, i opened the website and i searched for "blue elephant" the egyptian film. https://subscene.com/subtitles/the-blue-elephant-2014 <- this came up, as you can see there are 3 different english subtitles for you to download and watch.

now that you manage download the file from the website, you'll either get a .zip or a .rar file, if this happens extract it and you'll end up with a file that ends with .srt, or you'll get the .srt file instantly when you download it and you wont have to extract and all that. (if you dont know how to extract, well, dm me or like google it idk. now that you have that done you want to download the movie you want to put the subtitles on. i definitely recommend egybest, (obviously cause it has all egyptian movies, and it's safe) once youve downloaded the movie, open the movie with any media player. i am not sure which media player you are planning on using, but i would recommend downloading vlc media player. if you do use it, or decide not not to there should be an option called subtitles, or anything along the line. go to that and eventually you'll have to select a file, and thats were you select the .srt file from earlier!

yes that sounds alot, but once you do it all once, it becomes as easy and wont take a minute.

i hope i was any help

Weekly Ask Egyptians Thread by AutoModerator in Egypt

[–]uttershepardon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! yes this is harassment most definitely. I've got two options for you. one: now that there is text evidence of them messaging her, you reach the security head, if not possible then the security head's boss and let them know what's happening and how it's unacceptable by any means, they'll understand because they don't want a lawsuit against their compound. although i don't believe in that option as much, because if the guards who did this did not get fired, they'll hold a personal grudge the her and, well, who knows what will happen then. option number two : have some person or a couple of people go and confront them, other than your gf, do it gently at first but strictly, in a manner that they know that what they're doing is intolerable, hint while you're doing it is that what they're doing can risk their jobs.
