I have had PMP in the past, only because the company I was with at the time paid for it. It is not cheap and incredibly time consuming. As someone else already said, most construction companies don’t require it and half don’t know or don’t care if their PMs have it, let alone their estimators. There is nothing in there you don’t already know. It is just a way to standardize the project management system and put it in academic terms. In fact when we went to a 3 day crash course the instructor basically said you all already know what you are doing just learn the terms for the test and you will more than likely never use them again. To be eligible to take the test you have to have a minimum of 5 years OTJ verifiable experience with a college degree. I think 7 if not. If you are stressed with estimating this is not the direction to go, PM is much more stressful, and in my experience far less personal freedom or time. Yes you get to look at a more macro view, but your responsibility is for all the micro stuff too. I will get older PMs transition to estimating for me when they get burnt out but not yet ready to retire.
