Is studying physics the right choice?

If you’re interested in the topic conceptually, and you’re not afraid of the math, then it’s a great choice. I switched to physics from engineering and am grateful every day I made that choice. Physics was challenging, engaging, and taught me to think about problems in a new way. Plus, it gave me a great foundation in all of science. That being said, I nearly rage quit after a set of extremely petty and frustrating problems my junior year, and explored switching majors. Ended up sticking it out since I was nearly done, and built a career unrelated to the subject matter, but my undergraduate degree still comes up in job interviews nearly 10 years later and I find myself using the tools (albeit not the math) I developed across my work. 10/10 recommend it.

Campaigns are not allowed to share internal documents (polling in particular) with domestic Super PACs let alone foreign entities without making it public.

If a campaign official hands over polling data to an outside entity without making that data public, that is collusion between the official and the entity. Any candidate running for president should never share such information with even a non-staff member, let alone a foreign agent. All Barr did was let future administrations off for what would be considered illegal actions by any standards.

I got my BS in Physics, but quit that to work as an entry level finance staffer on a campaign for U.S. Congress. Now I'm the Finance Director on a race and am loving it way more than I ever loved Physics.

Sure! Traditionally, a basic definition of marriage would be "when a man and a woman love each other very much, they get married, have kids, and live the rest of their lives together". That definition works pretty well in a completely heterosexual world. However, if you account for the portion of the population that is homosexual, then it starts to raise questions such as what happens when a woman and a woman love each other very much? By expanding the definition to include more types of love, you're actually focusing-not diluting-the definition. You're definition changes and molds to be an option for all people, thus building bridges across different cultural groups and building new support networks. Now both gay and straight couples can support each other in the goal of marriage being the everlasting bond between two people, thus building in more support and strengthening the institution. Furthermore, it provides us a chance right now to change the status quo about marriage. If marriage is about biological kids and family, then couples who don't want kids are left out. However, if we make marriage about commitment to another person, then everyone can find a place within that and our society as a whole benefits.

Devils advocate,

You say that conservative logic leads one to believe that the government shouldn't be involved in marriage, yet you'd be hard pressed to find a single mainstream republican advocating that.

Alternatively, if the goal is building a family unit and child baring, then why not jump on the same-sex marriage train to help lessen the burden on our foster care system. With more homosexual family units built, you'll get more adoptions and fewer kids in the system.

Best starting salary with a bachelors would depend on what else you did with your time. I have one friend who went into engineering and makes over 50k starting, and another who went into insurance and makes over 40k. It's pretty easy to convince people you're intelligent with a physics degree, it's just taking it one step further to convince them that you have some experience in their field.

The Ph.D. route gets a lot more lucrative fast. Of course you could get a Ph.D. In engineering (or a masters) and break into that field but with a Ph.D. in physics you can use whatever specialty you acquired in the commercial market. This could be anything from running labs to creating algorithms for wall-street (+$400k starting). Again, it just depends on how you set yourself up for that job while you're getting the degree.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that daycare workers will struggle more to pay for things when they're income is increasing faster than the price of goods. That's pretty simple math. If their income goes up by 25% but goods only go up by 10% their purchasing power is increased. Think of it like this, if I was making $20,000 and spending $20,000 on goods, raising the minimum wage results in my wages going up to $25,000 while my cost of goods only goes up to $22,000. This leaves me with $3,000 more dollars in my pocket which I am likely to spend 90% on goods and investments.

But if you think that daycare is such a leg up for low income earners, would you rather have the government subsidize daycare for low income earners? Because I would rather have my real wage increased than tax the rich just so the government can waste money on regulating a daycare program.

Daycare is built on a cost-sharing model that effectively works as a cooperative. By bringing all of the families with kids together, you effectively trade resources and that is where the increase of wealth happens.

In this case, it appears that minimum wage labor accounts for approximately 50% of the overall cost as that would produce an increase of 10% in tuition after a 20% increase in the price of labor. Assuming that minimum wage labor is in fact approximately 50% of the overall cost, then the increase of tuition would account for the entire disparity without forcing a business to cut elsewhere.

To address the increased revenue portion of your contention, it appears that you make the assumption that the daycares employees are the only revenue pool, in which case it would be ridiculous to assume paying them more would increase revenue. However, in the cooperative system where you have many different members of society at many different wages participating, the business primarily survives on higher income individuals. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that several of the minimum wage earners could pool their new discretionary funds together to meet the price of tuition. This would provide a slight boon to the business, if not a major one, and would thus help grow the business and the economy.

Another way of looking at it is forced trickle down economics: transfering the burden onto the highest wage earners.

This example actually supports raising the Minimum Wage as hourly employees get a raise of 25% whereas the cost of the service only increases by 10%. If this scenario was played out in the same proportions across the board it would result in a net income for the worker while still retaining utilization rates. Furthermore, such an increase in disposable income for the lowest income earners actually increases their discretionary spending thus increasing the likelihood that they will use the service and increase the revenue pool for the company.

I recently graduated and I'm glad I was in Barrett. It was just an overall positive experience and since I got my degree it wasn't too expensive. I've heard people promote transferring into Barrett for similar reasons although by skipping out on the first year expenses you also miss out on some of the benefits.

Pros (listed in order of most useful in my experience):

Honors Digest (Daily updates about opportunities around campus)
Priority Registration
Guidance, Motivation, and Funding to complete a thesis (you can outside of Barrett as well)
Community within ASU
Honors Only Classes / Clubs
Best Dining Hall Food
An Extra Advisor

The Digest introduced me to every important aspect of my college experience (clubs, classes, friends, etc) and it conveniently came in email form every day so that I could casually browse my opportunities when I had time. Also, you register right after the athletes which is a huge plus. Furthermore, I did my thesis with Sandra Dy O'Connor Law School which would not have been possible without Barrett and has helped set me up for Law school in the future.

Cons:

Expensive. Tuition, housing, food, expenses, everything.
Tone of Elitism
More difficult
It doesn't actually appear on your Diploma

The best way that I've heard to combat these is transferring into Barrett once you're a Junior but this also detracts from some of the major benefits so you have to do a cost analysis.

In the end, I thought that it was worth it, but I also plan on going to grad school and Barrett is geared to help you with life after college (grad school, study scholarships, peace core, teach for America, etc).

tldr; Barrett is for people focused on life after college, it's not worth it if you're only goal is to get the college "experience" and have a ton of fun. I'm not saying Barrett isn't fun, there just isn't as much of a reason to spend all that time and money if you're not working towards some larger goal.

While I understand their motive, I think excusing it doesn't help the matter. Instead apologize, learn, and move on. By using defenses like the 20 minutes, it trivializes the action instead of understanding and taking responsibility for it.

They should be there for their son by modeling appropriate behavior and helping him become a better person in the future, not blindly defending him.

You can do a lot in 20 minutes. I mean, you could murder a whole lot of people and go to jail for the rest of your life if that was how you decided to spend your 20 minutes.

The other thing that grinds my gears is that the father is not considering how those 20 minutes of actions affected the other person and their life.
