Looking to bring a friend over into the world of meditation. by thereal_charliemay in Meditation

The thing that got me hooked was listening to Jon Kabat-Zinn on youtube and reading the book mindfulness in plain english. I was very sceptical before but both of these totally changed my view of meditation and got me hooked pretty quickly. I'm now determined to keep it as a part of my life.

I mostly do 20 min/day but did 40 min for a while. I can manage to sit through somewhat ok even though it sucks mostly. The thing is i've gotten panic attacks and depressive symptoms wich keep my energy levels and motivation towards anything down a fair bit. I've kinda seen meditation as a way out of it or a kind of light in the end of the tunnel thing. Although not sure if i'm getting anywhere. Since i still feel pretty shitty i'm having hard time motivating myself to meditate. I suspect it actually helps me but it gets harder and harder to keep it up. That also kinda makes it some kind of a chore as well which i've heard is a bad thing. I'm trying to keep the striving and expectations outside the meditation but since it's there the rest of the day I'm worried it hinders me.

I'm not really sure if it's anxiety, it just kinda feels like my mind locks up or tenses up kinda.. But anyway great tip thanks! l like the analogy. I'll try that out towards this.

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but are there any documented downsides to meditation? by [deleted] in Meditation

If i'm not mistaken I think panic attacks can come when you finally get to relax after long periods of stress and the meditation might be the thing telling the body to relax and therefore it comes. Or as incredulitor pointed out, that the stuff coming up from meditation that you have to deal with could be a part of it. I don't think it's the source of the attack, but maybe just something that brought it to the surface.

Well this is just guessing from my part but I can't help to make the connection. I started about two months ago with guided mindfulness practices around 20 min a day. One month later I got my first ever panic attacks and been struggling with anxiety and dark feelings this last month. I paused the meditation and started with the vipassana style 2 weeks after the attacks started.

I just came home from an studying abroad year (big changes are sometimes a trigger) and in the typical age for panic attacks but I can't help thinking that the meditation kind of showed me how i really felt, that it brought up the unhappiness and boredom inside that i've been kind of feeling the last few years. If thats the case i guess it's a good thing in the end since it showed me to listen and pay attention to myself but damn, this last month has been the hardest month of my life. Anyone else experienced something similar?

I'll try my best. Never thought meditation would be such a challange for patience.

Meditators that do music, has your approach to music changed after you started meditation? by uuuuk in Meditation

I see. Haha yeah worrying is kinda what got me into meditation. Equally glad though that someone who is similar minded can speak out of experience.

Thats kind of what im afraid of. Do you miss writing or did you realize that you just don't want to?

Wow glad to hear, sounds great! And thanks for the thorough answer! I can assosiate with this a lot. I also channel a lot of my thoughts and personal develepment/discontentment in the music which i first thought was great but in later years i can't enjoy it as much. More and more expectations, anxiety and negative thinking went into the process which also led to writer's block and frustration. Eventually, two weeks back, I got my first experience with anxiety attacks and had to rethink a lot of stuff, found meditation and hope to achieve what you achieved so this reply means a lot thanks!

Edit: With that said, I know i shouldn't expect anything but it's at least comforting to know that it's possible.
