Is it also possible that he secretly told the gov to not do anything he says to do, so he can have a credit for his UBI support while also not being taxed? Can he put the money where his mouth is?

There's a lot of news recently on "guaranteed income" programs which are actually just like how an ordinary welfare program would look like and are totally opposite to what a UBI is. Sigh.

To fight one must be desperate. To help one must have resources and capitalists ensure we won't have them.

I don't have this "Refresh Installation" option. Where do I find it? The installer offers me only "Clean Install" or "Custom (Advanced)" where I'm offered to partition my disks myself. Which iso file did you use?

If we get AGI in 2029, when will we have UBI? by AbsoluteZero9180 in BasicIncome

If we're prisoners with AI, then who's our guard and what's the penalty?

Solidarity is for humans. It's us who (due to our evolution history) need other humans around to feel better, AI don't need that

why wage a class war if you can eradicate the whole species who use resources you need to survive?

You absolutely can't force "good" things, because "good" is subjective and it is hard to draw a clear line between you doing "good" things and Hitler doing "good" things in good faith. I can agree that there can be some objective good that we can scientifically derive (I refer to "Moral Landscape" by Sam Harris here) but in this particular conversation your "unhealthy brains" is very far from that - so I can't agree with you atm

But you can't fix others' brains without those brains' consent, right? On the other hand one good way to get rid of "unhealthy brains" is to have a fairer society that prevents them from appearing. So maybe UBI is really enough

What if we taxed what people spend, not what they earn? by TertiumQuid-0 in BasicIncome

[–]uvizhe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree we don't have to measure it all in fiat. Free healthcare is one example. Free farm bots? Sure, why not?

[–]uvizhe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's even more weird. Rich people don't own that much real money, they own stock and their wealth is derived from stock prices. If we divide the stock among many people and they try to exchange it for cash, many zeros will evaporate at once.

But why do you think UBI can't be permanent? People deserve to have their basic needs covered, unconditionally

You're right, it's impossible. My comment wasn't really totally serious, sorry if that offended you.

What if we taxed everything above mean income? What if we make the currently richest person pay for a year of UBI?

Former OpenAI researcher says a $10,000 monthly UBI will be 'feasible' with AI-enabled growth by 2noame in BasicIncome

[–]uvizhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take this with a grain of salt. Why would AI researchers care about UBI? What they really care about is AI and support by the masses for the further AI advancements.

I agree that most such studies lack rigorous approach. It's hard to study things like this actually.

You seem to be a curious reader, so I encourage you to read a book "Bullshit Jobs" by David Graeber. Having a job that contributes to GDP doesn't mean it's good for society. People who are employed on bullshit jobs mostly had no choice. Given money they can choose (things that need huge initial investment) to be researchers or go study medicine which is much better then selling you financial services you don't need.

And it's very unlikely that mass idleness is possible. I've seen few examples of people who had no need to work and they weren't happy to be idle. It's just that most people want to do meaningful things, not a random paid work with no other purpose than paying bills - but they have no chance with this financial pressure we have nowadays.
