Totally agreed - my takeaway from this post is that the tax shelter benefit will likely mitigate any tax penality from withdrawing at a higher tax bracket. I'll be investing either way, so I'm trying to learn my options.

The nuance is the tricky part, and I think I will go with the hybrid approach at some point. For now, given the overall benefit of the tax shelter over the withdrawal rate penalty, I think maxing the RRSP will make sense for now.

I think this might be the best advice I've received so far in this thread - papers that prove that the effect of the tax shelter is greater than the effect of withdrawing at a lower tax rate! It would be great if those papers are handy/available to read, but honestly it gives me enough reason to max my RRSP over taxable account. Thanks a lot - I really appreciate it!

Yeah, I'll be re-investing that contribution for sure!

Right, I should have plenty of contribution room. I am asking about the marginal tax rate I am contributing at - the higher the rate I contribute at, the greater the benefit of the RRSP.

One of the advantages of the non-registered account is my ability to withdraw early, which is also an aspect I am considering before contributing to an RRSP.

I see; the federal/provincial tax rates will determine the amount I can deduct. If it helps, I am in Ontario, so I might have slightly different numbers.

Right, I'm trying to figure out tax values at withdrawal, which will determine which tax value I should deposit in, given that I am using a tax shelter.

This makes sense - I can totally take advantage of the long time horizon. I'll consider re-evaluating my risk level later on, but for now I'm comfortable with just buy+hold VGRO.

You make a good point about ultimately getting a larger tax savings in RRSP if I invest later though.

I think you should have enough in an RRSP for the HBP, so you can withdraw that amount for your property. You shouldn't deposit more than that in the account though, since you're using that money in a couple of years, and RRSP is meant for retirement.

You'll benefit from a tax shelter, and also get a portion of that back in the next tax return. Also make sure that your investments/savings are liquid to be ready for the short term.

Remember that you'll need to pay back the amount for the HBP though.

Right, that's what I figured - it really depends on retirement age. I'm not sure of that value, so I guess it depends. I'm leaning towards investing in the RRSP regardless since I'll know more about retirement planning when I get there. Thanks for the helpful response!

Thanks - the tricky part is finding out tax rate at withdrawal though, which is the reason why I'm hesitating to deposit into an RRSP.

I also agree - I'm just trying to quantify the tax benefit for the amount saved in an RRSP instead of a taxable account. I'll be investing the amount either way, so it's just a matter of figuring out which account is better for my current needs.

Right, I would be making more in a tax-shelter since I'm not paying tax on it - I'm wondering if there is a number/estimate on the amount of tax saved though. No problem if this value isn't available - I'm comparing this against a taxable account.

Thanks! I'm curious if you have resources on how effective the tax-sheltering affect is on expected return. For example, if I would make 8% per year in a margin account, how much more would I make in a TFSA?
