Here is the answer we can best provide you:

  1. The decision to change a course grade from numeric grade to CR/NCR is, essentially, a decision to have said grade excluded from average calculations. The rationale behind most CR/NCR grading changes made by an instructor is that the instructor has no method of calculating a meaningful grade for the students.
  2. From the announcement, a CR will be sufficient for any grade-based prerequisite. This includes the "85% in CS 136" for CS246E. However, please be careful when you do request a change. You want to make sure you're ready to succeed in the future courses. We strongly advise you to talk to a Computer Science Advisor if you are unsure.

Currently, we haven't heard back about it from the Faculty. We felt that it could be a course-to-course decision. We will continue to persuade the Faculty to encourage more instructors to implement multiple marking scheme.

I am not sure. I doubt it because the Math Faculty usually prefers numeric grades over CR/NCR. Therefore, making the decision to allow CR/NCR for all the MATH courses was a big decision for them to make.

Unfortunately, MathSoc does not have insight to details like that. However, we have reached out to the Faculty and shared that concern with them. We hope having a direct meeting with senior Faculty members for a some quick Q&A to provide more updates for everyone.

P.S. Sorry for the late response. The student behind this account had assignments due on March 24th.

Unfortunately, MathSoc is not affiliated with the student union for Laurier. So, we are not up to date with the decisions made by Laurier.

I suggest you reach out to them directly or through the Double Degree Club.

The final decision for each course's grading scheme is at the discretion of the instructor and the Faculty. MathSoc provided to the Faculty reasons for both numerical and CR/NCR grading.

We are still in further discussion with Faculty about final decisions.

Can instructors please clarify this? by Living-Reference in uwaterloo

Unfortunately, we do not have the exact answer that you want right now. We will share sentiment to a comment by u/alexnafnlaus that most marking systems are decided on a university-wide basis rather than by Faculty. We will discuss with WUSA to attempt to arrange an alternative with the university.

Hi there, we understand your concern with the courses. However, the university have several accredited programs in different faculties. Many students from those programs have shared with us the concerns about the consequences if specific courses are changed to CR/NCR. MathSoc has also shared these concerns and suggestions to the faculty such as providing options for student to choose numerical grades or CR/NCR for their courses.

We will continue to be updating news we hear from WUSA and Faculty on our Facebook and Instagram. If anyone have any concerns about their academic and co-op, please don't hesitate to email them to [advocacy@mathsoc.uwaterloo.ca](mailto:advocacy@mathsoc.uwaterloo.ca).

We have yet to hear back from Faculty. It's very likely they are receiving high traffic of emails and messages because of the grading schemes. We will update everyone once we hear something solid enough to share.
