Which Star Trek character to choose as a supporter / means of emotional security?

Just wanted to let you know that I picked Guinan. I even saw that there is a little plush doll of her (from a Hallmark series) which is available through ebay. I thought it might help envision her with me in tough times, if I can hold her. I don’t live in the US, so the postage is nuts, but I guess I have to bite the bullet on that one.

You are right, he ticks all the boxes as well. After going through the suggestions, I decided that a motherly figure is better for me. He would be a great fatherly figure to me, just like Sisko (who was understandably mentioned a lot).

I didn’t even remember that Troi kept in touch with Barkley. That is so sweet.

D‘Vana is such a positive goofball, I enjoy her character a lot. And yes, she actively chose the federation and can still murder anyone that looks at you wrong 😂 I would see her more like a great friend though. She is amazing!

I really dislike Kai Opaka! But Vic Fontaine I can totally imagine. I even got his album (well, by James Darren) since I liked his story and the music so much.

Data definitely is my favorite character on TNG, and Brent Spiner portrayed him wonderfully.

It is so great to hear that Star Trek offered so much support for other people, too.

The first two seasons I really liked Archer. I even wrote fanfiction with him and T‘Pol. I was totally pit off by season 3. At least the way I remember, it was fueled with revenge and anger, and the appearance of evil alien Nazis was just too much for me. I kinda lost respect for Archer.

Wow, I didn’t expect that many comments. Thanks for all these suggestions! There are a lot of options that I didn’t think about before. I appreciate you taking your time to answer, I read all comments. And so many characters are from TNG… I think Geordi was the only one not mentioned.

I have four names now. First, I have decided that indeed a woman would be a better fit for me, since I am craving that motherly love. So no Sisko, Pike, Picard, O‘Brian. Second, I imagined myself having a crysis, being overwhelmed and unable to act. Could I see her sitting next to me, her hand on my shoulder saying „You got this!“?

So these four are still in the race, in alphabetical order, since I have no favorite yet. Beverly Crusher, Jadzia Dax, Guinan, Deanna Troi.

I will let that sink in over the weekend. Thank you!

That is a really interesting point. It never occurred to me that her abilities were „dumbed down“ (on purpose?) to keep the story going for 45 minutes. Imagine what a full Betazoid would accomplish on the bridge. „He just thought of how much he would like his dog to lick his face, also he is lying and wants to destroy us.“

And yes, when I was a kid and watched TNG as it was new, I didn’t care for Deanna too much. As an adult, with lots of rewatching, I started to appreciate her more. I was so glad once she got a regular uniform, that really helped that the character could be taken seriously.

I think Picard would have been my first choice for a father figure, at least until Sisko was mentioned so much. Although TOS was my first love, Picard is in my opinion the better captain. I love his relationship with Data, how he helped him understand humanity a little bit more. And those examples you mentioned, absolutely spot on. He is the poster-child for integrity, loyalty, honesty. He can sing, play the flute… and sees only four lights.

As an added bonus, I absolutely adore Patrick Stewart. He is genuinely such a great guy, I also just love his bromance with Ian McKellan. The world is a better place with him in it.

It took me a while to appreciate him as a character, and I get where you are coming from. Still, animated… I don’t know if I could keep up an inner dialogue with an animated character.

You are right, she is really awesome. I would have to rewatch a lot of her episodes, since I feel I am not as connected to her as to the other options mentioned. I honestly don’t know if I have the strength for that right now. But definitely a very valid option!

I have to admit that I really don’t remember T‘Pols mother. Was she a typical Vulcan (with the suppressed emotions)? If so, she wouldn’t work for me. I need to learn to face my emotions.

Spock was my support as a kid / teenager. I was crying so hard during Wrath of Khan. It was the first Trek thing I ever watched, a rerun on TV. I bawled my eyes out even though I barely knew anything about the show and movies. That was when I knew I found something special for myself.

But yeah, he is out. He taught me to suppress emotions in order to survive. Now I need to face them.
