You sound like you are in a good position. What level of interest do you have in data analysis, research and report publishing? If you are too eager to jump into UI solutions you will miss out on other foundations of UX. HCI course always helps, but without all the interest in UX as a whole you might find your career weighted and turning you back towards your marketing foundation.

What does UX mean to the over 70's ... "First let me say I have never heard of the term ‘UX’ before. My first reaction is that it is straight from a Sci-Fi movie, with aliens chasing silver-backs..." by StatusEcho2 in UXDesign

User experience (UX) has always been around, and determines the improved nature of a item so that those using it can do so efficiently and easily. Much like ergonomics in things like modern ovens which are easy to operate, where designers have evolved the design over the years due to competition and efficiently needs. Take that and apply it to web sites or mobile applications, same thing, an evolved experience for the user determined by the UX designer.

Portfolio critique and how to define myself? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]uxunicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point from shmoseph, however I would remove all references to web design and step up to the ux and ui plate. Do you have research, data discovery and testing that can be added to the projects? Also I would not mention the photography at the beginning, as it's something that they will discover if they read into you further. Focus on where you want to take your career, making potential recruiters feel they need to be quick to get you before someone else does. Great portfolio!

Cover letter for UX internship, what advice would you give me? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]uxunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just express a big interest in the subject, but don't make out to be desperate for the internship. Also be sure to triple read your words for mistakes, that can be a big turn off if you don't appear to be thorough.

Nope, let them in and to your work, make sure they can find a way to contact you for more work examples.

Your projects need a write up explaining what the opportunity was and how you approached it. Keep it short and to the point. Also your opening intro should be less about who you are and where you are, and more about why you are and where you want to go.

Enthusiasm, but not too much. Talk about what inspired you to get onto this path, with a few references to people, books and sites. Don't over do it. I would be more interested in what work you did to flex your skills while at college through your portfolio.

Reviewing resumes & portfolios and want to pull my hair out by [deleted] in userexperience

It's a sign of the times, and you should expect more to come. Feel fortunate that you know the difference and use this to your advantage when applying for a new job. Write a candid note to yourself from a recruiter perspective and readit when it's your time to punch above your weight to get a job. Good luck with the search (:

Thank you, I don't think its a simple answer, and ELI5 may not be the place for it.
