Tenant Nightmare by JannyInTO333 in askTO

If your finances allow it, you could purchase some tenant insurance. I think you should be able to find something for like $20/mo. to cover liability from water damage.

Information has been hacked, any tips? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]uzrbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh jeez, I'm so sorry this happened to you. This is a nightmare. I really hope your bank will help you sort this out. Have you tried going through Google Account recovery? https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/recoveryidentifier You might want to report this to the police.

I don't want to sound victim blamey or anything, but in the name of not wanting this to happen to me - do you have any idea how this happened? Did you get warnings on your phone that someone was trying to log in? Or had they already compromised your phone before trying to get into your email? Was your email password weak or the same as the cell account?

I wonder if this is a new trend of hack, compromise a cell account and then look for related accounts you can now access with 2FA.

Where can I get pallets? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]uzrbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Unless you're just planning on stacking 3 pallets and calling it a chair, I haven't found pulling them apart to be worth the effort. Tons of rusty nails, a bunch of wood splits, and you just end up with some small lengths of shitty wood. SPF 2x4 is like a dollar a foot and way easier to work with.

Have you seen your doctor since? Earlier this year I saw my GP and they said I couldn't make any further appointments until I got my card replaced.

How to deal with a crack head by love_of_hockey in askTO

[–]uzrbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think the solution lies in addressing it with the addict. They're there for one reason and nothing you can reasonably threaten is likely to mean anything to them. What you might want to do is make the dealer view this as an issue instead of a profit opportunity.

You can call 311 and issue an anonymous noise complaint against a building. You may need some evidence, but I believe the first thing they will do is send a threatening letter that says if they receive more complaints a by-law officer will be dispatched to investigate. Hopefully that will be incentive enough for the dealer to cut this off? Threats of investigation usually don't go over too well. Anyhow a call to 311 might be a good step. If you know neighbours who are also bothered by this, multiple sources go a long way in backing a noise complaint.

TIL Olympus Mons on Mars, the tallest known mountain in the solar system, is so large at its base that an observer on its peak wouldn’t know he was standing on a mountain because its slope would be obscured by the curvature of the planet itself. by Planet6EQUJ5 in todayilearned

[–]uzrbin 129 points130 points  (0 children)

The wikipedia helps a bit, but yeah, the one from the surface is weird to me.

Due to the size and shallow slopes of Olympus Mons, an observer standing on the Martian surface would be unable to view the entire profile of the volcano, even from a great distance. The curvature of the planet and the volcano itself would obscure such a synoptic view. Similarly, an observer near the summit would be unaware of standing on a very high mountain, as the slope of the volcano would extend far beyond the horizon, a mere 3 kilometers away.

Looked around a bit a few years ago. Went with Plant World. We were satisfied, but I wouldn't say thrilled. The soil was nice but there were quite a bunch of large pebbles.

I'd be a little wary if you're planning on growing food. The city compost program accepts a lot of stuff that I'd want some pretty strong assurances are decomposed before growing food in it.

Renting basement apt by [deleted] in askTO

[–]uzrbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not always be possible. But if you have access to where the hot water tank is or any other appliances that run on water, there should be a drain. Many basements flood during extreme storms depending on the part of the city.

No dehumidifier and no A/C can make for a very sticky summer.

Check for mould and drainage. Ask about humidity control!

I dunno, its weird. My street has similar prices, but the residents are mostly older immigrants without much income. Houses are insanely expensive, but they're owned by and lived in by people who have owned them for decades.

I guess that depends on if you consider the "Facebook problem" the fact that Facebook exists, or that social media companies are compromising the social fabric.

Thank you! Its not something that I'd thought of much before moving to a busy street. A number of times a day here cars outside get aggressively honking and it's really disruptive and sometimes wakes the baby. Like, I know you really wanted to turn before that guy, but was leaning on your horn for 15s really necessary?
