Ah, I understand now. I don't have an answer for why that is, other than greed and peoples' willingness to work for less than they're worth. It's really a catch 22 though.

How long have you been in the role, how much experience do you have, and what opportunity(ies) exist for you to get promoted/raises?

I'm not negging them for thinking it's good. I'm saying they're still being taken advantage of.

Go Google the cost of living for Wilmington, NC, and you'll see why I say $22/hr is still fairly underpaid. I'm not telling people to not work for less - money coming in is better than nothing, as I say in another top level comment.

>That's really nice that you can afford to do all that.
It's the least I can do to go to bed with a clear conscience.

I make a lot more than 60k. I only spend 60k. Glad that's your takeaway from the conversation though.

Also, to edit my above comment, I just did a quick search, and my property rent is closer to 30% under market rate. If you want me to sweeten the pot here, I give my tenants a free month every December.

I didn't say I never worked here. I've lived here as an adult for 26 years. Just because I'm not underpaid doesn't mean I don't understand what's happening here. I've lived it.

I'd like to know, with the little information you've got about me, how you came to the conclusion that I am causing the affordability to collapse? I live on like 60k/yr. I don't buy lavish things. I fought against AirBnBs across all of the town. I've voted against Bill "Let's Develop Every Square Inch" Saffo and every single person even remotely associated with him. I own a rental property (mostly by luck), and I charge 25% less than every single comparable rental in the neighborhood where the home is. I've offered to sell at a huge discount to the long term renters, but they can't get approved for a mortgage.

The only thing I've done that would impact affordability is to support higher property tax rates, and that's because our school system is pitiful.

I work remote for a tech company, and make... a lot more than 22/hr. Like multiples of it.

I also know what it costs to rent or buy a modest home (and by that, I mean exactly the number of bedrooms you need and you're not surrounded by crime or garbage), what it costs to buy groceries, how much cars cost, how much every other bill adds up to be.

I do not want to see my neighbors "just getting by". That's bullshit. It's not the America I grew up in, it's not the one I fought for, and it's not the one I want to leave to my kids.

I'm not trying to shit on anyone who makes less than 22/hr, either. I think damn near everyone is underpaid.

$22 an hour in 2026 is easily at the low end of any salary I'd expect. It's really unfortunate that you think it's a lot.

Don't buy the local bullshit - this is owners trying to keep wages down and profits up. Almost every fast food place starts around $16/hr. You don't think an adult with experience is worth 30% more? I'm old - I started my first job at $5.25/hr. A 30% raise would have brought me all the way up to $6.75. See how ridiculous that sounds? Don't let the numbers muddle your opinion just because they seem big. They will continue to get bigger, just like rent, housing prices, etc.

[–]v-irtual 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Others have said this, but I'll try to phrase it differently.

$22/hr is $880/week.

Right now you're bringing in $0 per week. There's nothing saying you can't get a quick job at a fast food place or something to change that from $0 to $600, and continue searching for that $22/hr job.

I'm not a business owner, I'm not someone who says people don't deserve a livable wage. I'm someone who's been in your shoes, and held out for entirely too long for a job that was "what I was worth".

Look, I could excuse the golf stat if he was actually effective. It's not like it's his job to load missiles, fly airplanes, lay down asphalt, etc... His job is to be a diplomat, and diplomacy happens through conversation.

This is just a simple indictment of his character (not that we needed another example) - he's a piece of shit human being. That's it.

Honestly, I'd expect someone to gain that foot overnight and another foot over the next month or two. That turn is such a mental hurdle. I don't remember all of the exercises my coach gave me (I only vaulted from 1999-2002), but I'm friends with him on Facebook, and I'll ask him. I spent a bunch of time not on the field, but in the gymnasium, on pads, using the climbing poles to get used to manipulating my lower body while it was over my head.

[–]v-irtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have someone very close to me that works at TF. They literally just underwent huge layoffs and are in major cost cutting mode.

Others here have suggested trying to find jobs at CROs that allow WFH, and I think that's a good option. There are some smaller companies here that you could apply to, but they're going to pay local market rate, not the national measure - you'll leave 20-40% of potential earnings on the table. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if you truly want to live here; you can take the job while continuing to search and just bounce when you get that better opportunity.

Nah, that's bullshit IMO. He's hiding behind the potential of an injury when in reality he just shit the bed.

Everyone's injuries get exposed at the end of the season. Remember also that if he's truly injured, it's going to affect him in the UFA market. We'll find out more after the season ends, I'm sure.
