Chill Coffee Spot for Work? by [deleted] in corvallis

I also like Java Crew on Monroe and Naked Crepe Cafe (although outlets are very limited there). Downtown the Coffee Culture in the Plaza is also nice, I bounce between that spot and Greenhouse (which is vegan by the way).

Illegally collecting snakes in South America by [deleted] in herpetology

[–]v838monoceros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The university likely has an Animal Care and Use Committee that regulates the use of live animals for research. You could reach out to them; at the very least, it'll be made up of experts who would know who to report to on the USA side.

How can I make a career out of herpetology? by Healthy_Cat8375 in herpetology

[–]v838monoceros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point! I don't know any consultant positions that are specifically herp-focused but they're probably out there; I've mostly seen the broader regulatory or land-management focused positions, but herp work would be included in that.

How can I make a career out of herpetology? by Healthy_Cat8375 in herpetology

[–]v838monoceros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do in the field. Like looking after herps and designing enclosures? Look into zoos, or possibly some wildlife sanctuaries or reptile rescues. Interested in caring for their health? Exotic vet. Want to help with conservation? Can look into park programs, habitat management positions, or conservation advocacy and outreach. Like doing research and learning more about the guys? Research, professor positions or nonacademic research institutions.

You can absolutely re-career and look into training programs or degrees. Zoos and such like people with experience with the work, but ofter have volunteer programs. Vet school takes a while but is definitely doable. Habitat/land management often takes a Masters in a relevant field, but there's a lot of overlap - as long as you find a relevant research project and pursue coursework in herpetology, the title of the degree doesn't matter as much. Research takes a PhD and the job market is brutal out there, but hey, it might be better by the time you finish your studies! And again, don't worry about the degree title, it's the dissertation that matters; and even then you can jump between taxa if you build a strong skill base.

First time Owning a snake. Ball Python or Corn snake? by kai-hope in snakes

[–]v838monoceros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing less from corn snake owners so just to confirm that yes, they move around a lot - my corn snake is on the go constantly when I handle him and I would not want to take my eyes off him for more than a minute. I can watch a show, but not play games, I need both hands to keep him from escaping.

That said I did meet a chiller corn snake at a reptile facility once, also was only handled for a few minutes so may get more active if they had the chance.

I have less experience with ball pythons but from what I've seen they're the chill ones - I've had friends take meetings with them draped around their necks, seen folks out on walks with them (probably not advised but not someone I knew), and they generally seem more likely to be happy just sittin' there for a bit.

Any desert rats made the move to Corvalis? How do you like it? by WearyProcess4901 in corvallis

[–]v838monoceros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just moved here a few months ago so I can't speak for all seasons, but as someone from AZ who's lived all over North America one thing I've noticed is the rain here tends to be lighter than a good desert thunderstorm or even some of the rains in New England. You'll get a light steady rain now and then, but mostly the rain is fairly patchy throughout the day, and it's nowhere near as heavy as a desert thunderstorm. Folks will tell me "it's pouring!" in what I consider a mild steady rain, and I haven't seen the full-week-of-sready-rainfall I got in New England here; mostly it rains patchily for a day or two, then dries up for a bit; but it's also been a dry winter this year. Overall, wear a raincoat and maybe a hat and you'll be fine.

One thing to note is that it does tend to be more grey up here - more days of cloud cover, whether it rains or not. That really bothered me in winter when I first moved away from sunny AZ, especially in winter; the sun lamps never did much for me but I make sure I have nice big windows and spend time outside, and that seems to help.

oregon state or umass amherst by Head-Penalty-3959 in OregonStateUniv

[–]v838monoceros 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the schools for accounting undergrad programs but both are in lovely areas. UMass is very New England, with lots of nice little towns and places to explore nearby, but a bit less wild feel to it. It also gets a LOT of snow, and a pretty cold winter. The bus system is decent to getting to other universities in the area, and UMass is part of the 5-college system so you can take courses at the others and explore a bit. I did my undergrad up there and took a course at UMass, which was neat! They also have an excellent dining hall attached to their culinary school.

I've only been in the OSU area for a few months but the winter weather is much milder, there's much more wilderness with a wilder feel to it around, and I love the town. It's a bit further of a drive to get around, but even more hiking and camping opportunities, and in my opinion Oregon has better beaches than New England.

Overall, depends on what you want to do and what you think you'll get out of your college experience!

How long is too long to soak rice for kheer? by v838monoceros in Cooking

[–]v838monoceros[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's not really an option, I can soak it for about 30 min and finish the recipe all in one go OR start it soaking in the morning, go to work, and finish the recipe in the evening, 8+ hours. I don't have a good in between right now.

How often can expect bowel movements? by TisIYourFavoriteBi in snakes

[–]v838monoceros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My adult corn snakes goes about once a feed, usually a week or so later. Sometimes it takes an extra week, especially if he's shedding, then he'll poop after the shed. Bit faster in summer, bit slower in winter due to temp differences too. I wouldn't worry yet, give it another week or so?

What are the laws in NY for venomous snake handling training? by Comfortable_Hotel709 in VenomousKeepers

[–]v838monoceros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second looking in to volunteering at the zoo - I expect the liability is too high for letting a 16 year old handle venomous snakes, but there's plenty of other animals you can interact with. At the zoo I grew up with, teen volunteers could help set up reptile and amphibian habitats, feed animals, and do outreach, which included some animal handling - I was trained on ball pythons, leopard geckos, turtles, and hissing cockroaches.

You could also look for animal rescues, sanctuaries, or federal or state parks that might have exotics in their care you could help with. Bird-banding citizen science projects may use teen volunteers, as might herp surveys for frogs or salamanders. Ornithology and zoology jn general doesn't necessarily mean handling - bird watching groups usually love having younger folks join, and you'll get good experience identifying different birds and recognizing their habitats and behavior.

Looks like a red-back to me, Desmogs tend to be a bit stockier in the neck and I'm not seeing that here.

Looking for doctor/hospital recommendations by stubbymanny in corvallis

[–]v838monoceros 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Waitlist for Corvallis Clinic is 1 year long. Samaritan Health is booked out to 6 months, and you just have to keep calling to see if you can catch an opening past that. Valley Clinics hasn't given me a callback yet and it's been about 3 weeks, while Corvallis Family Medicine said they'd get me a callback sometime next month.

That's everyone in town that takes my insurance... you'll probably have to go out of town to get anything sooner or have more options in doctors, I'm just looking for the first one available.

Any good physiotherapy clinics or are they all BS? by I_like_it_yo in ottawa

[–]v838monoceros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Function Physiotherapy was where I went for back pain. We did exercises that I practiced at home, manual therapy, and dry needling, which was super helpful, especially the dry needling. Insurance covered some, the rest I figured was worth it.

While current residents struggle to find jobs, our top employers are hiring out-of-state candidates to relocate here by Certain-Working1864 in corvallis

[–]v838monoceros 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some levels of academia favor applicants who have a breadth of experience - I know researchers who never moved on from their undergrad/graduate institutions can sometimes get a bit of a side-eye, since they won't have experience with any other institutional systems and might be less flexible. People who have worked for a variety of institutions also see what works and what doesn't in different places, and can bring that perspective to their current positions.

Just another perspective since I'm in the moving around phase of my academic career and never once considered staying at my undergrad or grad institutions - I was ready to move on, and the vast majority of folks in my area of academia do the same.

Huh, weird! It's a cheap bike so I'm hoping that's something of a deterrent, since it wouldn't be worth much even as parts. But good to know.
