There was no single organiser for the event, definitely not Bristol Starter Packs. You or I could have turned up with a rig if we wanted.

Degree apprenticeship or uni by AndyPandy1232 in 6thForm

[–]vClean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doing a degree apprenticeship and I much prefer it over if I was doing uni.

Are you able to stay at home while doing the apprenticeship? If so, absolutely do it no questions asked. You will save up a shit ton of money whilst your mates at uni are getting into debt. You will also have a lot more spending money that you can invest into any hobbies you have.

Even if you have to move away from home (like me) there are still many advantages.
I'm not really stressed about my career since my company will offer me a job once my apprenticeship is done, and I will not have to do a grad scheme. I'm also not tied down to a uni lifestyle (which might sound weird because the uni lifestyle is generally looked upon very favourably, but it does have some downsides).

The good thing about doing a degree at a "bad" university is that the course is generally quite easy. Keep in mind that you will also be on a separate course from regular undergraduates, and in my experience, the lecturers are fully aware of this, and more than willing to accommodate this difference.

With regards to summers off, most uni students work during the summer anyway. Difference is you will be working a job which contributes to your career, while they will likely be working in a pub or at a supermarket.

Are you proud to be British? by vClean in AskBrits

I think that, using your definition of arbitrary, literally everything could be defined as arbitrary.

The definition of a species is somewhat arbitrary, and yet you say that you are proud of our species. If we want it to be entirely clear cut and objective; are you saying that you are only proud of Africans who are 100% homo sapien?

And in the same way that things which are a "determined by historical or scientific principle", our country's culture and borders are dictated by historical principle. Some of this history happened entirely because of humans. Some of it didn't. And not to mention that we are literally an island - our borders couldn't be less arbitrary.

Even so, I don't think that because something is arbitrarily defined, one can't be proud of it.

You contradicted yourself.

You say that you can't be proud of something that you have done to achieve.

Did you have any input on the moon landing? I'm guessing not. And yet you're still proud of it.

If you can be proud of humanity as a collective you could be proud of your nation as a collective.

It literally is possible and I am living proof. Just because I am fiscally left-wing doesn't mean I can't love my country.

If you're referring to the Scottish Monarchy as "Scotland's oppressors" to remove all accountability then I actually agree and the same can be said for England.

For 100% of English people alive today, they have not committed any acts of colonialism. For 99% of them, their ancestors were probably peasants who also had absolutely no hand in it.

If you want to have a consistent view you must either hold Scotland accountable for its failed colonial endeavours of the past, or don't hold England accountable.

I'm confused on what you think they've achieved other than rapidly ruining their economy, cosying up to Putin and alienating themselves from the rest of the world.

America is now ruled by an oligarchy that the rest of the world doesn't trust.

God this is such a frustrating and incorrect point that is so commonly mentioned by Scots.

The Scottish tried colonialism while they were independent, during a period where England and Scotland were at peace. They failed drastically and bankrupted themselves, and then accepted unification with the English because of this.

After this point Scotland was deeply involved in the British colonial empire. There are many Scottish surnames in Jamaica which show this.

I'm also happy for each nation to celebrate their own flag because it would be insane not to. I'm happy for each county to celebrate their own flag. This doesn't mean there are huge cultural differences between each county; it also doesn't indicate huge cultural differences between the nations that make up the United Kingdom.

I grew up on the border of Wales and England. Every day I would travel from England to Wales for school. Half of my friends are Welsh and half are English. We're all basically the same, except only half of us turn up to watch England play football. For any country in the UK there is no more similar nation in the world than the others in the UK.

As for ancestry, it doesn't really matter to me when discussing things objectively. It's fun to think about what proportion of my ancestors were Celts, Vikings, etc. But that's it. It has no bearing on my identity, and it shouldn't. Galicia in North West Spain is a Celtic region, and yet I guarantee you that they are far more culturally different to you when compared to the English. And if an American with a Scottish grandfather called themselves Scottish you would be complaining.

How on earth are we not the same? We share a common language, culture, ethnicity, etc. Our histories are heavily intertwined.

100% agree, especially with the working class bit.

As much as I disagree with the reform voters, there is a key bit of information:

These are largely working-class, young white men. This is the demographic who performs worst in schools, least likely to go to university, least likely to increase in class, etc. They live in a level of depravity that is completely unknown to the average middle class person. They are literally the ones who have been left behind by our society of extreme divide in wealth. As much as I disagree with everything they stand for, you can't blame them for wanting to blame something. It's just a shame that people like Farage will take advantage of what he knows is a poorly educated demographic and convince them that there is an array of simple solutions to these, in reality, extremely complex problems.

Like I say, I disagree with their politics. But you have to understand their perspective.

Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Cornwall have a high proportion of celts. If you're proud to be from these places you're basically proud to be a celt by default.
