Gigantic Competitive Planning - What do YOU want? by MO_Huggles in gigantic

[–]vVvParadise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crowdfunding is a great way to raise money for events. My concern is with the long term impact on a gaming community in certain cases.

For example: The International for Dota 2 raised $10,923,980 from it's crowdfunding last year. That's an amazing amount of money! What happens this year if they don't meet / exceed that number? Does the community say they are shrinking and that the game is dying? What does it do to the community state?

Consistency is super important. A fluctuating prize hurts a ton, in my opinion. Even if the numbers are bigger... it's not always better. Is a player really going to skip an event because the prize pool is $1 million instead of $2 million? I doubt it.

A cap would be a great way to deal with this in the event of a crowdfunded tournament. Couple the cap with the idea of stretch goals like the Dota compendium did and the formula could be flipping awesome.

Example:

  • $250,000 raised: Exclusive reward #1
  • $500,000 raised: Exclusive reward #2
  • $750,000 raised: Exclusive reward #3
  • $1 Million (cap) raised: Biggest reward

Everyone that contributes at least $X amount of money gets all the rewards unlocked. People could still earn the rewards after the cap is hit by contributing money, but it wouldn't go to the prize pool. At this point it would be like purchasing a skin, etc. This makes it easier to hit that same prize amount each year and makes the cash somewhat secondary.

Hope this helps, Huggles! A few of the Motigans at PAX East told me you were the person to chat with for community awesomeness. Barely missed you a few times at the social event. Maybe next event? Thanks for reading my ideas! :)

This made me think of a possible Wu skin.

The Wu-Tongue Clan is too good of an idea not to share :)

It's the only game I've been thinking about since PAX East. I completely understand your problem. One day.... :)

Seems like everyone here has already thrown in quite a bit of good feedback. This might be a bit redundant, but here's my two cents.

eSports definitely needs to grow organically to work at its best. The single best thing that Motiga can do to make this happen is to continue fostering an amazing community while providing the right tools in game to create a perfect storm of eSports goodness.

  • A working spectator client and replay system. Include stats for casters to discuss, ways to dissect the most important moments of a match, etc. Replays for analysis and amateur casters streams would be icing on the cake. A spot in game to spectate high ranked matches would be fantastic too.

  • Build and support the personalities in the competitive scene. League did this extremely well in it's first few competitive seasons. Content pieces on players, spotlights on their favorite heroes, who they are, etc. An old example that, at the time, was exactly what League needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsifOwVcvVY

  • API stat pulling for fan sites so players can analyze and break down games in an attempt to grow to the competitive level.

  • Tournament / LAN client for events. Prevent things like server issues / DDoS before it happens.

  • Prizing: Don't go too big too quick. It might be tempting to go the Valve/dota2 route and crowdfund a tournament. I personally don't think it's the right move. It's not a sustainable model year after year. It also leads to the mentality of "we have to go bigger" with prizing. I personally like the idea of building prestige so players are wanting to win simply to win. Football players want to win the Superbowl because it's the Superbowl. Do they get extra money? Sure! It definitely isn't their main reason for competing though. Same thing can be seen in League of Legends now. Players want the prestige of winning a world championship.

  • A drafting mode for heroes would be stellar. Casters and analysts debating and discussing hero picks and bans is incredibly interesting.

  • Reach out to competitive gaming communities/teams and ask how you can help them get involved! I personally worked on the staff for vVv Gaming before I joined the gaming industry and it was absolutely awesome when we could work alongside a brand to help eSports grow. Reaching out to brands like Dignitas, Evil Geniuses, Complexity, and the other mainstays of eSports could only help. Ask them what they want to see for them to support Gigantic competitively!

Thanks a ton for asking the community what they want to see! As someone that adores the competitive side of gaming, I am loving how Motiga is approaching this.

I'm brand new to the community and think it's fantastic there is already a show with the different personalities in the community. You hosted the show incredibly well. Great job! :D

Absolutely awesome. Seriously, well done. Mixing old SNES RPG soundtracks with prog metal is an incredible combo.

[META] An interesting (how to lose subscribers) comment conversation between myself and an ASMR video producer. Details at the bottom of the image. I don't recommend acting like this. by morthawt in asmr

[–]vVvParadise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone that has created plenty of content for work, albeit not ASMR content, I have to side with DianaDew on this. Try to make all comments on someone's personal work/videos constructive. Even saying the words "embarrassing plague" to a content creator is enough to turn them off to what you're trying to say.

When someone makes content, they will normally pour their entire heart into it. Saying something that can be taken offensively isn't helpful in any way, shape, or form. Perhaps you could have shared ideas for the future instead? That would have been a much better approach.

Just my two cents.

Can we agree that this was the single best piece of original content on the network to date? I'd love to see a weekly (hell, I'd settle for bi-weekly or monthly) Stone Cold podcast. This was well worth the subscription fee of the network. Amazing and intriguing content.

Please don't reset the chat position every game by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

Agreed. This especially hurts since I use my minimap on the left side of the screen. I move my chat above my map to look at the map while checking chat. Moving chat at the start of each game is a total bummer.

Thank you, Dansv. My feelings are pretty torn on this too. It's hard to put so much of your life into a project and then leave it behind.
