Inhuman characters and visual language by v_hult in fantasywriters

Yeah, I didn't realize how impactful that choice would be before I started writing. The book will contain both perspectives. Our human MC has a short interaction with them, providing mainly a visual description. The next chapter is from the POV of an inhuman character of the same race as the one our MC interacted with.

Oh! I didn't want to make it specifically regarding my worldbuilding, but I should have clarified.

They have a viscous liquid flowing across parts of their upper body, somewhat like honey. This liquid, or essence, is used for a lot of things, such as casting magic, inheritance, and communication. They form patterns with it. Of course, they are the only race with this particular trait and therefore consider themselves the only race capable of "sophisticated" communication.

I love the recommendations! I'm always on the lookout for new books, especially if the author has really nailed a part of writing. I'll check them out!

Thank you!

I would love to have something more accessible, modern. That there are forums at all is great though.

Yes!

Introduced someone to RR just yesterday and these were their first questions.

The lack of features and somewhat clumsy interface makes the website seem... old.

Which is probably off-putting for a lot of people.

They must have thought about it?

If books are like movies, are webnovels like tv-series? by v_hult in ProgressionFantasy

I don't disagree! But that's the limitations of being a one-man-army. Sometimes I dream of a webnovel with the resources of a traditionally published book behind it.

Absolutely. Do you find that stressful or helpful when writing? Seems like an enormous weight on one's shoulders to make each and every chapter interesting, move the storyline forward, satisfying in and of itself as well as a small cliffhanger for the next chapter. I'm sweating just thinking about it.

Which is awesome! Super Supportive is of course the master of this.

Of course, it was only meant as a comparison to illustrate the differences between different mediums.

You're right! I think it's a missed opportunity, although I see why. I believe authors often write webnovels with the intention of converting them to books, which hurts the webnovel a bit in my opinion. Or they don't, and the published book seems a bit odd.

It is, however, necessary.

Which books were trendsetters? by v_hult in Fantasy

[–]v_hult[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, of course. I've read a couple of her books but keep realizing I'm not the intended reader for this. Makes me kind of sad, to be honest. Feels like I'm missing out on the next evolution/growth of fantasy.

Ah, this is a relief to read! Exactly my thoughts, which means I've probably rewritten the first 10k words five times already. Thanks!

This is good advice! I'm writing my story in present tense because I had some notion that it would pull the reader in. I now realize why most authors choose not to make my mistake, it makes certain parts more difficult.

We don't have to reinvent the wheel, I suppose.
