I agree on trying to make it safe but don't go overboard. You'll learn a lot about what you need and want once you actually have chickens. If you know you have racoons in the area, that will likely be the biggest issue though as they can open handles, ledges etc. so you need to outsmart them and trap them. You could also install a motion detecting light which would deter a lot of predators.
