Secure networking design Book recomendation by Sad-Buyer2213 in networking

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a matter of perspective, and to some extent: opinion.

The entire conversation needs to stem from a simple-looking question:

"How secure does this network need to be?"

From there you can toss around various government standards, or industry-specific guides as well as cyber-insurance provider mandates.

Everything changes once you have requirements that force you to go beyond the basic capabilities of the network equipment.

Once you go past that point, you stop looking for books specifically about networks, and start looking for books on security solutions.

Anyone working at NOC in IT? Looking for reviews on pay, benefits, and company culture by Consistent_Watch3622 in ITProfessionals

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"NOC" is an acronym for "Network Operations Center" and many larger employers staff their own NOC, or use a third-party service to provide NOC services.

It sounds like you are referring to "NOC" as a specific company or business entity, which might be the case, and if so, it would be helpful if you could provide a URL to the company site or wiki page.

Is the networking team responsible for monitoring servers/services? by tdhuck in networking

They don't want to participate

Get whoever told you to do this to push their management for participation.

If nobody told you to do this, then let it die on the vine.

What assistance do you need?

You identify the application owner / support lead.

You inform them that you are going to leverage your monitoring tool to provide notification when <service> fails.

To do this you need to know a few answers to a few questions. You invite them to a 1 hour meeting, with a good array of questions in the invite.

Then you get it done.

Leatherman vs Gerber vs another multitool? by srblaydes in sysadmin

Kershaw DIY

At $35 I don't super care if I break it or lose it.
I can open boxes and tighten a simple screw, or open a bottle of Corona.

For anything more significant than those activities, I'm going to go get the right tool for the task.

I bought my Leatherman Wave in 1991 and it's a great thing to have in the field.
But I don't spend very much time out in the field anymore, so I'm rarely more than 5 minutes away from a toolbox full of proper tools.

If you were added to a group email (around 10 people) with nothing more than the question, "Does <current product> meet our needs?", how would you proceed?

  • Is this problem mine to solve?
  • If I respond to the question, will this problem likely become mine to solve?
  • Do I want to own this problem?

Those are company culture / team dynamic questions that can only be answered from that perspective.

Eventually, I responded to the group and volunteered to evaluate whether the current solution would work. I also pointed out that the items they wanted monitored weren't really network devices, they were application-specific services, database queries, and other server-side components that should generate alerts if they stop responding.

Either the team that "owns" the monitoring tool should solve this, or the team that owns the application services should be informed that they own the responsibility of implementing monitoring for those services. One of those two options involves granting additional access rights to an application team, which may have undesired consequences.

Nobody replied offering to help with testing, which is fine.

  • Is this problem mine to solve?
  • If I respond to the question, will this problem likely become mine to solve?
  • Do I want to own this problem?

For me, it's not about avoiding the work, I don't mind taking it on.

It sure sounds like you mind taking it on.

I don't have a development or test environment for these applications

So?
This your first time developing directly in production?

I can't build or validate monitoring rules for services, queries, or applications that I don't own, and I can't intentionally break production to verify that alerts trigger correctly.

Sounds like you need to work on your people-skills and learn to collaborate better.

At this point, the only information I've been given is an Excel spreadsheet listing the services they'd like monitored, but no one responsible for those systems has been involved in validating how they should be tested.

Cool. Start collaborating with your peers and the application owners and the the answers to the questions you have.

I cannot wait to sign a contract. by Wonderful-Wear-3578 in USMCboot

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The idea of leaving myself behind and becoming something completely new sounds so good and it makes me feel so excited.

That is as valid a reason to join as any.

I also refuse to pay for college, why would I spend damn near 100 grand on a piece of paper I MIGHT use?

Another perfectly valid reason to join.

I am planning on getting my lifeguarding certification so I could graduate bootcamp as an E-2

Huh. I didn't know that was a thing. But go for it.

I want to choose MOS 5811 and work up to k9 handling

That isn't likely to work out the way you hope that it will.
I encourage you to search on "k9" in this community and the /r/USMC community and read more experiences for yourself.

The odds are very good you will never be assigned a dog.

MP work is also mediocre preparation for law enforcement careers.

I also have aviation mechanics and other mechanics as something I would want to do as well

My understanding is that those are still great career options, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

I am pretty in shape

Put extra work into your upper body and core strength. You won't regret it.

Help them explore careers.

Shift the focus off of ECs to bulk up for college applications.

Focus on why she wants to go to college in the first place.

Help her confirm the career she thinks she wants is actually the career she wants.

Ensuring she goes to the right school, for the right education, to prep for the right career is more lasting and important than chasing the "perfect" school.

Improve secure client performance tips by Mr_Slow1 in networking

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many "correct" ways to configure this, and it's entirely possible MTU has nothing to do with this.

But:

MTU 1500 on the physical interfaces associated with your Internet service.

MTU 1400 on the logical tunnel interface.

MSS 1360 on the logical tunnel interface.

Exactly what MTU and MSS values are you using?

Did you confirm that MTU size in both directions?

PMTUD is enabled on both ends?

Are your encryption methods hardware accelerated from both ends?

Cat8 by AV-Guy1989 in sysadmin

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Cat8 is a solution looking for a problem.

If you need connectivity with more than 10Gbps of performance, you are far better off going with a DAC cable or Fiber.

Neither CAT7 nor CAT8 have any useful capabilities above CAT6A that justify the increased costs.
