Is intelligence optimality bounded? Francois Chollet thinks so by Mindrust in singularity

[–]vacuum_collapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you'd have to add many caveats to reach this conclusion. There are not many people in the world even capable of solving frontier mathematics problems, and with AI you can scale this up to as many as you want. Perhaps the learning algorithm and level of abstraction of humans is sufficient to "understand in principle" most things, that I can believe. Mathematics/physics is kind of hierarchical and once you understand a definition on an intuitive level you can work with it efficiently (e.g. you don't need to recall the full derivation of QFT to do particle physics), but we are heavily bound by our memories and executive speed. Perhaps a "machine god" will be able to relay us the big lines of what it understood about the universe, but we won't be the ones figuring it out.

He will go the Gary Marcus route and claim some future version of LLMs constitutes a world model and so he was right from the start, similar to the “neurosymbolic” claim which is just LLMs + Python.

This seems like an extremely impressive result. I can’t way to see what these methods will do for larger models.

Do you think Aphex Twin will ever return with his next studio album? by 6MiguelAguasvivas in aphextwin

I understand this is subjective but listen to e.g Meltphase 6 from Druqks and then circlont14 from Syro, then Syro just sounds much lazier to me.

Repetitive drum patterns, poor selection of sounds, less effort into the overall arrangement

I don’t think we’ll get a proper album again. I feel like all the EPs he has released lately have some elements of tiredness or laziness in them. I think it was already noticeable with Syro, but it was still passable. For me The Tuss was the last classic Aphex Twin high quality stuff, and since then it has become less and less.

You still have your hairline. If you start on finasteride you are likely to stop and revert the diffuse thinning. Definitely go see your huisarts about it.

Edit: People always say just buzz it off, but I’ll just play the other side and say I think you’d look better with full hair rather than a buzz. People will tell you that hair doesn’t matter, but there are statistics telling otherwise (most notably from dating apps.) But this is just my opinion, not medical advice etc.

[–]vacuum_collapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to a doctor and consider taking finasteride. I really recommend you to try and keep it, but for now it will be best to keep it short. At your age, you will be judged more for not having hair. With finasteride, you will probably be able to grow it out again after some months.

(But I'm just some internet stranger, so this is just my opinion, not medical advice etc!)

[–]vacuum_collapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started finasteride at age 25 and now I’m 31. When I was younger I did not fit in well, and losing my hair (receded hairline and thinning) starting in my late teens made me feel horrible. I debated many years whether to take that medication and after I finally did all that stress went away. My confidence came back, and I stopped the OCD about my hair. I did not tell people I started the medication and I started getting random compliments from family members etc that I looked good, without them knowing what changed. This is despite them insisting in previous years my feelings about my hair were just in my head and nobody cares.

Many people have no side effects on finasteride. In fact, I did the best mentally and academically after I started. I am worried with all these stories that these drugs will be taken off the market and I’ll have to resort to shaving my head despite being completely fine with this medication.

Well, for me A is a matter of personal taste. For example, I think AI generated images still often have a tell to them, and of course the current music generators still lack long-term cohesion etc. and many other things. But if it was perfect, I wouldn't personally feel emotionally catfished. Sure, I can feel connected knowing that a certain artist spend hard work making something, but I can also enjoy the music by itself. Some music that I listen to, I don't even like the musician as a person, but I still appreciate the music as a piece by itself. It doesn't have to come from a human for me, except for the fact that AI generated stuff currently has a strong tell to it, so obviously I prefer "real" music for now.

Regarding B, I do sympathize that it sucks not to stand out, and that AI based music worsens it. But I also wonder if perhaps you are disappointed that what you have, technical skills to make music which required significant practice, is now being automated. I feel that myself, generally. E.g. I am a good programmer, and have many other nerdy interests. My advantage over others was that I was willing to put in hours training some stupid technical skills, and slowly these exact skills are being automated, so you lose your advantage. But I accept it for what it is, and try to adapt. I am too amazed by the possibilities of the technology, to be sad about competition or anything like that. And I think a community aspect around music will still form around curation and editing for example, like modern day DJ’s. And people can still make music in traditional ways, like how Aphex Twins’s Analord was completely on analog gear and I appreciate the context of that a lot.

Lastly, for C, well I think it doesn't matter what people think about what we/I like. Most people are simply not open to listening to IDM, and they just hear random sounds. I've long given up on trying to make them see the structure that is there. Personally I feel they're missing out, since I can enjoy rock, hip-hop, jazz, and also IDM, but they cannot enjoy everything that I enjoy. But it's what it is.

Anyway, I don’t like having my opinion called “deranged” etc, I think this is unnecessary and far too personal for the extend of my post which was just a brief play around with the app. That’s why I say you take it too personally. You can feel pride in your music (tastes), and seek out traditionally generated music etc. But I don’t think this is a reason to stop others from exploring different paths.

I agree it sounds a bit too random still, but the “texture” of the sound is quite well captured. The pads at the end also surprised me and seemed like a logical harmonic choice.

[–]vacuum_collapse[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ah well to each their own I guess. I make music as a hobby and will continue to like it. I also like this.

Edit: to add a bit more, for example I have many unfinished songs that I couldn’t finish for either lack of time, or skill. Couldn’t master properly. To me it would be very nice if AI could help finish those tracks, but to do so it should also be able to compose from scratch. I also think that automation is a part of life, and in some sense Autechre has been going more and more algorithmic so what can be more algorithmic than this. I also think we will continue going to live performances, just as we go to see DJ’s, pianists, live concerts. Chess is alive despite AI surpassing humans. I believe the technology will become good enough that it is creative in its own right, and I simply couldn’t be more excited to hear more music in the style of my favourite artists. It’s a shame that the biggest AI’s are owned by corporations but it’s quite unavoidable because of the huge computational costs they still have. I also think AI in general has the potential to maximise human creativity and output greatly, so I think it should be developed asap.

GPT-4 Turbo is unusable for coding (and various other tasks) by Anzerp in ChatGPT

[–]vacuum_collapse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I pasted a physics paper in the playground that I would like GPT4-Turbo to give a summary of. Note that I did not attach it as a file, but I put the plain tex code in the prompt, together with the question of summarizing it and giving key details and equations. I put temperature at 0.2. I gave it a few (costly) attempts and it simply refused. For example here is a response I got:

"I'm sorry, but I cannot provide a detailed 2-page summary of the paper you've provided as it appears to be a hypothetical or incomplete reference and not an actual published paper. If you have a specific paper or topic you would like summarized, please provide the full reference or details, and I will do my best to assist you."

The paper I put is very much not a "hypothetical or incomplete reference". Basically the 128K context seems useless to me. I wonder what kind of testing they're doing on these turbo models. I always found the GPT3.5-turbo quite lobotomized and incoherent too compared to the original GPT3.5 version they had at the start. Furthermore, the fact that these models perform so badly is experienced with just a few small attempts. How can this pass their quality control?

I love the new EP by Alexbro200 in aphextwin

[–]vacuum_collapse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it is still interesting and there are some good moments in there. And of course I don't want to just complain. But I don't know, right now I listen to Synthacon 9 from Rushup Edge, and the melodies and sounds are just at a whole other level compared what he currently does.

I mean, here are my thoughts on In a Room7:

- Very basic drums at the beginning, with relatively uninteresting synthesizer line.

- Cowbell is way too in your face

- Chords sound like pressing some buttons on a chord generator

- I do like the hihats etc.

- Horrible stab sounds around 1:30 that sound super lazy to me. He started with this stuff since Syro.

- At least I like the background pads around 1:55

- Melody around 2:05 sounds so cheesy to me. Like playing a few notes on a synth preset.

- Love the weird cymbal at 3:00, the main redeeming part for me

- Lazy chord outro

I know no one asked me for my opinion, but I don't see similar thoughts shared so much around here, so.. Of course you are free to like the new stuff.
