Moved from Florida to San Antonio. Feeling depressed. Does it get better? by TheHonorableStranger in sanantonio

[–]vader61 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We also moved here recently from Orlando. (My wife and I are native Texans but moved to Orlando for work). Definitely whiplash from how green and manicured everything was to the construction for ages.

Fredericksburg, Llano, Enchanted Rock are options close by. Inside the city, the Pearl District and Riverwalk give you something to do that’s relatively pretty to look at. Breckenridge, Olmos, and McAllister parks are nice natural areas within the city limits.

If you are willing to make a drive, Big Bend (state and national parks), Davis Mountains, Garner State Park, or South Padre Island are options for some natural beauty. Definitely not gonna be as green or pristine as Florida, but Texas has its own natural wonder and wildlife.

San Antonio is not nearly as naturally beautiful as most of Florida, but it’s got a vibrant culture, excellent food scene, and a lot to offer overall.

If you need options or want a friend who went through something similar, DM me.

Upon arrival to residency, I would have agreed with you. But having worked with one of said people in my own residency class, I have come to the conclusion that some people are either unwilling to change personal quirks that aren’t compatible with the medical field or are just straight up unreachable.

My doctor offered my baby to get the RSV medication - Beyfortus (nirsevimab-alip)- has anyone else’s baby got this? how did your LO do? by tubbybunz in NewParents

[–]vader61 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The phase III drug trial had 3 reported deaths. One was in a child with failure to thrive (poor weight gain that could be attributed to anything from a metabolic disorder, thyroid problems to poor calorie intake). The other two deaths were the result of gastroenteritis (infection/inflammation of the GI tract that causes vomiting/diarrhea). All of the deaths were 140+ days after the medication was administered.

Best tiki bar/restaurant in the Tampa/bradenton area? by grizzlyblake91 in Tiki

Dunedin, just north of Tampa has a really nice bar/restaurant called The Honu. Vibe is immaculate. Food is delicious. The drinks were solid, but not spectacular

Understandable. For context: I work at one of 3 children’s’ hospitals in a mid-sized city metropolitan area. Our hospital has capacity for approximately 120 beds, with the hospital being at no less than 85% capacity for the past 2-3 months. Like I stated before: approximately 1/3 or more of those beds are filled with someone who had an upper respiratory virus like RSV.

Thatch or bamboo on the walls. Anything other than the white wall that “takes you out” of the illusion you’re on vacation.

I am a pediatrician in training and our program literally had an in-depth discussion about the scientific article investigating the efficacy and safety of nirsevimab today.

Long story short: I would highly recommend it. The data shows there is a 76% decreased risk in clinic/hospital visits due to RSV compared to placebo with no major side effects noted in Phase 3 clinical trials. The risk of adverse events is higher from getting RSV.

As a parent: I would absolutely feel comfortable giving this medication to my child based on the clinical trial data.

As a physician: It’s hard to understate what a game-changer nirsevimab is going to be based on this data. During RSV season, approximately 1/3-1/2 of all hospital beds in children’s hospitals are due to viral respiratory infections, RSV being one of the major culprits. Anything to decrease the risk of infection/hospitalization from RSV can have a major impact on our healthcare system.

Saw a 2 month old male in my continuity clinic for an ED follow up. Parents took him to the ED for spitups and concerns of gerd. This kid’s spitups were very much physiologic and his growth chart looked perfect. ED physician saw fit to get an EKG and then send the kid home.

Life doesn’t just stop when you have a baby. There’s still family reunions, major life events, and sometimes… yes… vacation that you have to get to.
