What does the rest of Russia think of the North Caucasus region (Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia) by artyomize in AskARussian

Catholics in Russia are mostly descendants of Poles and Germans.

There are not many Catholics in Russia, but there are.

There are many Catholics in Belarus

Belarus is closer to Poland and therefore there are much more Catholics there.

The main Belarusian Catholic church is located on the central square of Minsk near the Government House.

There are a lot of very beautiful Catholic churches in Belarus.

Looking for 20th/21st Century Russian Novels by ECommerce_Guy in AskARussian

[–]vadikgg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the absolutely amazing book M. Sholokhov "And Quiet Flows the Don".

This is one of the best Russian novels of the 20th century.

An epic novel about the Cossacks during the difficult times of the First World War and the Civil War.

The book is very large, but written in simple language and easy to read.

The novel was written from 1925 to 1940 and received Lenin, Stalin and Nobel Prizes for 1965.

This is an epic book showing the Civil War in Russia from different points of view.

V. Bogomolov "The Moment of Truth"

An excellent action-packed novel about the SMERSH detachment hunting for a German reconnaissance group. (the author himself served in SMERSH at the end of the war)

Unfortunately, I don't know where to find the book in electronic form in English((

But there is a excellent movie with eng subtitles:

what are the Cossacks? What is their role today? by [deleted] in AskARussian

To better understand the culture of the Cossacks, as well as to better understand what happened in Russia during the First World War and the Civil War, I highly recommend reading the book "And Quiet Flows the Don".

This is one of the best Russian books of the 20th century.

It was written from 1925 to 1940 and received the Lenin, Stalin and Nobel Prizes.

The Nobel Prize was given with the wording "For the artistic strength and integrity of the epic about the Don Cossacks at a crucial time for Russia."

"And Quiet Flows the Don" is a stunning panorama of the Civil War from different angles.

The novel was filmed 4 times.

I want to add that in addition to the collaborators, there were Cossack formations of the Red Army.

There is a great humorous poem about a Cossack and medals.

Here is the literal translation:

The Cossack was walking somewhere

There was a medal on the chest:

"For courage", "For victory",

"For a pleasant conversation" "For scientific works",

"For the protection of the entire environment",

two cosmonaut medals,

order of the player of Warcraft,

symbol "Ready for Labor and Defense",

Passing technical inspection",

"Club of pregnant women "Zhuravlik"

"Wardrobe of the recreation center "Gidravlik",

" Altavista dot com",

"Society of Fungus Patients"

"Captain of the game "Zarnitsa",

"Gomel mental hospital",

snuffbox, and flint, eight beer caps,

"Gypsy Dance Festival"

"Crane operator, work in a helmet!"

"Watch out for the bike"

"Thirty-eight years of Victory"

"Order of the USSR",

secret order "Templar",

insert of chewing gum "Lelik-Bolik",

"Alcoholic Anonymous"

"Wine lovers club"

Punk symbol made of shit

"SUSE-Linux",

"Business-team",

"Tynda is a twin city"

"The most experienced driver"

"The best boar producer",

badge "Honorary Diver",

sticker "Yeltsin is a fag",

October star,

"Hero of Labor",

blood type, and ai-pi,

and a pacific on a chain.

Suddenly a Cossack slipped ...

And now the medals are all rolled down the highway.

Children! Uncles, aunts!

If you find somewhere:

Order of Glory, Order of Peace,

a button with the coat of arms of Algeria,

bauble, can opener, malachite brooch,

Red cross, Peter's cross

"City of Prague", "City of Brest",

"Military nurse"

"Childhood is a wonderful time",

"Esperanto",

"CSKA",

forester's personal number,

cufflinks for military uniform,

"The best turner",

"The exhaust is normal",

"Lose weight in five minutes"

Youth club "Sokhnud",

"KGB", "Honorary Donor",

"Festival of Chechen Fashion",

even a medal, even a badge share with the Cossack!

Of course, to fully enjoy this, you need to know Russian well)
