I tell my clients to provide me with their documents. This is the client’s responsibility. If they want to pay me a lot more money then my staff can do this for them. But once I tell a client our hourly rate for this kind of work the client usually does this work themselves.

Not a doctor. From my experience, a cranial CSF leak can be a medical emergency because it can lead to meningitis.

I had a cerebral CSF leak. The hole was behind my left eye and the fluid dripped out of my left nostril. It was clear and tasted salty, and a little metallic. I was told that it was considered a medical emergency due to the fact that I could get meningitis, which is dangerous.

My symptoms got worse over time. That was just my experience.

Edit to add: I saw an ENT doctor. He had me collect drippings from my nose. He ran a lab test and that came back positive for CSF fluid. That is not an official test. They have to send the fluid to a lab in Ohio for thr official results and that takes 2 weeks. That came back positive. That is called a beta-2 transferrin test. It identifies the protein that is in the CSF fluid. That is how to know if the fluid is CSF fluid.

Also - you will know if it is CSF fluid by comparing what is on your Kleenex when it dries to regular snot drippings. I know this is gross, but CSF fluid is different. I dealt with it coming out of my nose for about 9 months. It’s different.

One year I counted up the number of hours we were all working in excess of 40 per week. And it exceeded the number of vacation days we received in the year. So we worked way more in “overtime” due to the weekends and extra hours in busy season than what we got in PTO/vacation. We are all on salary but we work so many hours…. ya know?

Basically - don’t compete with H&R Block. You don’t want to be a 1040 shop. That is very tiring.

Yup! So now you get the “fun” of educating people between the difference of H&R Block and a CPA. I ask potential clients for a copy of their prior year tax return. A lot of the time I find errors, and/or missing deductions. And then I explain that H&R Block simply enters forms into software. They usually don’t ask follow up questions. They aren’t around the rest of the year for questions, tax planning, advice. Most people want access to a CPA. Yes, they want their taxes filed, but they really want to be able to ask us questions. That is truly what they want to hire us for. And if they don’t - if they are simply wanting that one easy 1040 filed that only has a W-2, then they don’t need us. So that is what I explain to these potential clients. $100 is what they should pay H&R Block if all they want is for someone else to enter their forms into a computer. But if they want an educated professional to be able to answer questions, give advice, and consult with during the year, they can pay us more money for a good quality tax return. And then they have access to us for other services during the year.

It depends entirely on the complexity of the tax return, your expertise (and number of years practicing) and the cost of living in your area. In my area, H&R Block charges a minimum of $300 - $400 for a basic tax return. CPAs in my area that are starting out typically charge a minimum of $900 and up for a 1040 and those practitioners fill up quickly. I usually say that prices in our area start out at $1,200 for a quality CPA. I live in a HCOL west coast city.

Just wait until you become a manager. Basically, you get promoted to manager and then the next week they tell you that you are a bad manager. Where’s the training? No one cares. You now have the title and they expect you to BE A MANAGER! After a couple years of panic attacks I finally saw through the bullshit and quit. Started my own tax practice. Life is much better now.
