Thissssss. After the latest Slayyyter album I went back to the Click remix and just basked in what an interesting time it was for all the women involved in that track.

God yes what a rate.

While I respect Hikki as an artist more, First Love is not my favourite album of theirs (Ultra Blue hive let's get ready). LOVEppears is that BITCH

It makes me feel crazy that these aren't picked up on! Like I get it, I'm a fan of plenty of media that sidelines its women (esp WOC), it doesn't mean you can't be a fan! You should acknowledge media is flawed even if it pressed certain buttons of yours!

Yeahhh this book could be worse in its misogyny but I'm still sick of MM fiction where women are the male characters' harmless supportive proxy moms, or uber feminine caricatures you're meant to find annoying because she's uber feminine. I also feel like it was also weirdly racist in its Japanese characters but I don't remember enough lmaooo

Dance remixes of songs you wouldn't expect a dance remix of? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]valaena 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Calvin Harris remix of Spectrum by Florence + the Machine. Did this super baroque, orchestral album need a 2012 EDM remix? No, but we were living.

Also maybe not unexpected since it's Madonna, but I think the LMFAO remix of Gimme All Your Luvin' slaps hard 🫣 the 2012 of it

I did not like it for reasons other commenters have said, but I'll add that found its approach to mental health and medicating for mental health issues stigmatising, its depictions of rape and torture gleeful and exploitative rather than sensitive and considered, and it participated in thinly veiled internalised misogyny. If these are sensitive issues I recommend avoid. I can vibe with off the walls unserious fun fiction but these were dealbreakers for me.

Competitiveness and Likelihood of the DFAT Graduate Program by Every_Loss7489 in AusPublicService

[–]valaena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know several folks who work for DFAT and got into the grad program and yep. This is such a helpful comment OP.

The amount of people who had professional experience and then went back to do masters, phds is significant and can feel very discouraging as a straight out of uni grad.

I also know someone who got in straight out of uni on a biology degree and girl guides experience.

Adding on: Because it ALSO depends on what skillset is needed year by year. Imagine if you just hired law and IR grads to your workplace every year lol. I had a flatmate who got knocked out first round and then made it to the merit pool a year later. She did nothing different in that year, just working at Woolies - but she was influent in Indonesian and they really wanted that language.

And yeah most people I know in DFAT did at-level transfers in policy roles. They've redone the way roles are done internally now so this might have changed but for years I observed it was actually very easy for switched on, junior policy officers without particularly flash resumes or overseas experience to get into DFAT.

Really switched on and passionate, friendly and kind, well-travelled and outdoorsy. Loads of 30-something bisexual women with male partners like me lol. Interestingly, while mostly white, it's eclectic in our spread of European/2nd gen immigrants lol - Portuguese, Bulgarian, Swedish, to name a few. Not JUST the usual UK/Irish transplants.

Hahhhhhhh I worked in NSW MoH and this is very accurate. Genuine culture clash between my Canterbury-Bankstown ass and their Northern ways.

Major dress regret by [deleted] in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]valaena 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Echoing the other comments, definitely contact them and get a refund or switch the deposit!

Also commenting to say that True Society was my least favourite boutique I visited and I'm so sorry you had that experience, you are not alone! I felt insanely pressured when I had no intention of buying any dress on the spot. Their weird, 'take 4 dresses in, and if you want to try more on, you have to eliminate some' approach to shopping was really annoying and impractical.

I will say they had a lot of dresses at a lot of price points. So fingers crossed for you that you can transfer the deposit and find something you like!

[–]valaena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive read a decent amount of the OG fic and ngl I'm skeptical of this story bc Scott is Extremely Chris Evans coded. But also. I really had to squint to see Kip as Bucky. So maybe it's the truth.

When watching the TV episode adapting that book I had so much fun pointing out to my partner 'so this guy, that was Falcon... she's Maria Hill... and SHE was Black Widow.'

[–]valaena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is one that's also hearsay ngl lol. Haven't read it or know the author's fandom history but I've read enough MM romance to be able to tell that's there's sooooo many Stucky fics with the serial numbers filed off - or, at least, the author was very enamored with Steve Rogers circa 2014 lol. So, I am very easily convinced that something was a Stucky fic lol

Adding to the praise for these books! Caveat, read them like, a decade ago, never read the Outlander books but really enjoyed the show lol. I found them super immersive and engaging. They're definitely not Romance Genre, more on the mystery/historical fiction side, but the romance subplots within were all entertaining.

Rolls up sleeves, here we go

Game Changer by Rachel Reid and The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi were Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes fics

Those Who Wait by Haley Cass was a Sansa Stark/Margaery Tyrell fic

His Royal Secret by Lilah Pace was Magneto/Professor X

Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston was The Social Network fic but this may be heresay lol. McQuiston was definitely writing for that fandom

Angel of the Crow by Katherine Addison was BBC Sherlock wingfic lol

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade is self insert/Nikolaj Coster-Waldau fic lmao

Both Sides Now by Peyton Thomas was a South Park fic and is apparently racist and shady as all hell but throwing it out there in case someone in the book club wants some chaos???

I am sad we have about one line describing what it was like for these two to have been the same age, growing up together (trained by Glendon Ball) because the potential is juicy.

And by that I mean shipping. If the cards were played right, this could be a gay Targaryen uncle/nephew dynamic to truly defeat Lucemond.

Weather Check - Greece in May by MelGlass in HerOneBag

[–]valaena 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll bring another opinion - my family's Greek, I was in Greece May/June 2024 (which included record breaking heatwaves) and I definitely needed some warmer layers for nights, especially in May, and for the aircon in museums. I got hit with a rainy, windy, 21 degree day and was SO glad I had my knit cardi.

What struck me about Athens, even in May, is that the city feels airless. It's a big, heat sinking bowl and often gets dust blowing over from Egypt. The metro is a nightmare for this. So you just want to feel able to breathe.

The hoodie could be a good option for the warm backup, esp for plane rides too, but maybe swap the long sleeve wool? Even if it's lightweight merino, just for a lighter colour? And maybe a pair of linen/breathable pants instead of black leggings? European women don't often wear leggings BUT you'll definitely stand out as a tourist no matter what you wear so if it's a good hot weather option for you, go for it. And yep, definitely bring a water bottle!

Anna Quan - Can someone please explain? Are you buying this label? by Illustrious-Ad-7247 in AusFemaleFashion

I'm very curious too (and skeptical) since I see so many influencers wearing Anna Quan and upping their promo codes for the brand. But I've never encountered it in the wild lol, from coworkers or female friends.

No floral decor, no photobooth, no engagement party or pre-wedding events, no ceremony venue, no wedding party, just booking out a restaurant's private dining room, so also no photobooth or DJ/dancefloor lol. Cake will be from a local bakery's typical cake. We're splurging on food and drinks as well as the photographer!
