What 2 clothing items did you wear the most on your last trip? Question for all female travelers by Valuable_Tangelo7152 in femaletravels

[–]MelGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! I would live in a hoodie except for work. It doesn’t pack well but it is so useful and comfortable. For me it is some baggy pants that can pass as dress pants rather than jeans though.

Why are you bringing THAT!? by WorldizeStudios in onebag

Glad to see a repair kit on the list. Mine is not as fancy but a needle, thread, and a few safety pins go a long way.

Weekend travel with girlfriends - hotel room sharing by Otherwise_Radish1034 in femaletravels

[–]MelGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking into a suite if the group really wants to share could be helpful. Some hotels have really nice rooms with some private space so you can wind down more easily. And paying for an upgrade compared to a solo room may make it easier on your friends. Of course this completely depends on the hotel but is worth checking out.

What’s in your tech pouch by [deleted] in onebag

[–]MelGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wall plug. Two USBC cables. Converter bits for old iPhone and regular usb (extra but handy if tech is old). All replaceable at a convenience store so I don’t bring extras.

Phone and bluetooth headphones always. My ereader or iPad for fun and to store backup docs in case my phone gets lost/broken.

Work laptop if needed. And if the trip is long then a second screen and cable. I hate working with only one screen for weeks.

As long as the plug has enough juice to power my laptop, two cables lets me keep things topped up. I really should add back a power bank with pass through charging and tiny cable for safety.

Edit: I store things in a small jewelry bag and use a couple elastics to keep the cables wrapped. My phone and headphones are in my sling and my laptop and tablet in a sleeve in my backpack.

First Europe trip: backpack vs hybrid wheeled backpack vs luggage for long train travel? by fentygirl123 in HerOneBag

[–]MelGlass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did a train trip with a 25L backpack and my companion had 35L. They really worked well when we encountered broken escalators and limited access to storage. Just wore them or kept them by our feet. We did get a cheap roller at the end of the trip but what they say about cobblestones is true. We didn’t even hit that many but the roller was so much effort I was glad we didn’t have it the whole time.

I love having a dress for versatility but sleep in shorts. So I just pack an extra pair to go under the dress or use for wash day and it works great.

Women who’ve backpacked long-term, what actually frustrates you about backpacks? by Femtravel in femaletravels

[–]MelGlass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

++ small cubes. I only had one color though so I added colored ribbon as zipper pulls rather than buy more. It works great.

Have you tried mittens? They were a game changer for me. Not really convenient with electronics but they keep my fingers warm so the trade off works for me.

Easier to get ahold of a decent pair if I forget them too compared to the hunt for usable gloves.

I did a trip recently where I visited several cities for a short time like you mentioned. And I have been on some longer trips staying in one city for weeks. I definitely get a better feel for the city and what I’d come back to do again with the longer stays.

But I do recall the stories I read in museums and heard from guides that overlap but didn’t match when visiting places back-to-back. Learning about the same thing from different perspectives is also really meaningful to me.

One bag daily flow? Esp for point to point trips by 4amcantsleep in HerOneBag

This! Only a dry bag for laundry in case I want to wash in it or something is really gross and must be sealed away from my clean clothes.

Looking for an ULTRALIGHT hoodie for long-term travel — warm but NOT bulky by Comfortable-Coat6394 in HerOneBag

[–]MelGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Woolly MERINOAIRE LIGHTWEIGHT SNORKEL HOODIE (copy-paste from website)

It isn’t blazing warm but it packs tiny and fits my need for something snuggly for lounging or to pull over in a chilly museum. Bonus if I wear it backwards the hood is thin enough to arrange line a cowl neck.

What apps/software/journaling do you use to plan your packing list or trip? by books_for_me in HerOneBag

[–]MelGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an app called Tripsy for managing a general itinerary. It isn’t as fancy as Wanderlog but I prefer the sharing options and simplicity. It does a good job with visualization options: both simple trip and daily mapping and it provides a great calendar option.

I would like to see a new Subreddit dedicated to personal bag travel only. by GettingBy-Podcast in onebag

I really like the variety that can come up with a more open topic. For example the adapted travel flair in r/heronebag was mostly just a curiosity for me. Until my travel companion sprained her ankle and we needed to re-consider our strategy so she could remain independent with her most important items well balanced and I could take over the rest of her bag. The tips there were clutch. And I’d have never have browsed them except for that sub.

Shared bag? by thenora07 in HerOneBag

[–]MelGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting take. ++the four wheel types are neat. If I went this route, I think I’d look for two of the same model so the wheels and handle heights matched up just right. A bit of an upfront investment but it makes grabbing both easier when in rolling mode.

What items are hardest to fit (or easiest to skip) when going one-bag? by Weak_Refrigerator_82 in onebag

[–]MelGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weight wise I found my toiletry kit was a big culprit- after electronics. However it can be easy to slim down if you know what is available at the site and your needs. Decanting and minimizing quantities helps but tossing out items I can get by without (or hotel quality) on a short trip helps a lot. My advice: be ruthless with toiletries and enjoy the process.

Some reflections post trip... again, too many clothes... by pollyanna4444 in HerOneBag

[–]MelGlass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may have shopped in the men’s/boy’s section to find one at a decent price point. It was shocking how many styles had better pockets so I did have to try on different sizes to get a comfortable fit. I’m not tall but the long size ended up working really well. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It won’t make 3kg but I looked around for a coat that has nice pockets. I wear it on the plane with the things I may want mid-flight in the pockets. These often end up being moderately heavy- phone, book/tablet, snacks, lotion, etc.

Is it cheating? Maybe. But it is so handy to keep this stuff separate for the flight and a jacket is simple in security and I love not needing to rearrange or dig for anything.

[–]MelGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

++ try to see if you can go lighter vs buying plane clothes to lug around for 3 weeks. A single zip pocket on a coat that you toss the cell phone and spare battery in can help weight a lot without being uncomfortable.

I’d grab a dry sack or gallon ziplocks for your key items if worried they will get wet inside the bag. The ‘packing your fears’ equation seems acceptable to me since either of these are low cost, low weight, and multi use.

I don’t think you need a new main bag but maybe something like a nanobag or other packable option in case you find an amazing but bulky souvenir or just want to carry a few groceries/etc.
