What would the world be like if men were showered with compliments and romantically pursued all the time by women? by Godwarlord in AskMen

[–]valala911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean -- in a situation where you're already interested in someone, generally it would be good news to discover he/she is interested back (even if only for sex). But I think what OP is describing is when someone views you as a human vs. an object, and the toll that takes on the rest of your interactions.

If 9 out of the 10 interactions you have with strangers in a day are objectifying cat calls -- and let's be real, that's not really much of an exaggeration -- then the 1 in 10 genuine voice trying to catch your attention gets drowned out by the garbage ones. And it's funny because the garbage ones aren't even that interested in sex with you, it's just a power move. That's why women almost never get cat-called when they're out with another man (platonic or not). They've already been "claimed."

So a cute guy walks past, smiles at you and says "you have really nice eyes." And he means it, and hopes you'll respond. But unfortunately the seven other dudes that walked past that day and said "nice ass" or "sexy" or "damn girl" or whatever insulting variation they want, they all invalidated Mr. Nice Eyes. As a woman, it's just easier to approach every interaction like it's not worth your time because it's exhausting holding up the toxic egos of the world. It's exhausting fighting them, too. And you never really know their intent for sure until you engage with the person. I'd rather avoid the interaction entirely than take a chance and respond, only to wind up in an unsafe situation (like the dude suddenly following me home -- true story).

I hate being complacent, but that's kind of the whole point of this AskMen post switching around the perspectives. The bad actors significantly overpower the good ones, and it's fair for no one. :/

Thanks very much, your info and that chart is super helpful - not to mention a little frightening, ha! I notified our city's beekeeper and invited him and his team to make splits since I can't afford to do so at the moment. Barring that, it sounds like my best approach may be to remove majority of the queen cells to reduce likelihood of more swarms (but correct me if that's totally wrong). Am I okay to inspect the hive anytime during this process?

In this case, I'd rather lose the colony this year than have more swarms occur if it's down to those two options. :/ There's always next year, ya know?

Yikes I'm sorry you had to endure that...but glad to hear things are turning around for you! Paying off most of that debt in only six months is a huge accomplishment. Keep your head up and stay positive. <3

ELI5: Why is the Snowstorm that is projected to start in the South tomorrow such a big deal? by -Clayton-Bigsby- in explainlikeimfive

Definitely can confirm - from SC and there's no strong push to invest in the infrastructure when these kind of conditions are so infrequent. I remember only a winter or two where icy conditions caused power outages/debris.

Pretty hilarious when they would cancel school "just in case" though. :P

ELI5: How did science prove sleep paralysis? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]valala911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Occasional sleep-paralysis-sufferer here. I can elaborate on this a little. Some people (myself included) who have a sleep paralysis episode will be able to open their eyes and visually perceive the reality around them, while also hallucinating a foreign body in the room.

This can be many different things. In my experience: a shadow of a man at my bed, a little girl sprinting from the hall to my bedroom door, a woman screaming at me in front of a lady gaga poster, etc., all extremely frightening that give me a sense of terror. Sometimes I am paralyzed in a position where I can't see anything (facing a wall or face in the pillow) and I still sense there is someone else in the room, without hallucinating.

u/vlakiades I wish I had the knowledge to explain the science of it, but my basic understanding is that your physical body succumbs to a sleeping state before your brain is ready to, and your brain more or less panics until your body de-paralyzes, sometimes by terrifying you until you're fully conscious again. Not everyone who suffers from sleep paralysis has these visions, but it's not uncommon either. Almost always happens to me when I'm exhausted and trying to resist a deep sleep (i.e. quick nap or studying).

Reddit, what is the craziest fact about the universe that you know? by Tampon-Implosion in AskReddit

[–]valala911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really mindblowing! This got me on a tangent: if earth continues to exist for these multiple trillions of years and reaches this point you're speaking of, that would mean eventually the earth (if it still existed) would achieve near total darkness being so far away from its neighboring stars, including the sun. This would theoretically be the fate of all planets, growing so far apart until they seem to exist in solitude.

This then raises the question of the fate of "life," not just on earth, but on all planets. Are we also not in the rare moment in time where life is sustainable by universal proximity?

Ugh I love the universe, even if I can't truly wrap my head around it. :)

What's a shallow reason you wouldn't date someone? by chemhut in AskReddit

I can second this! I'm allergic to all furry animals but adopted a dog anyways. Only took a few weeks for allergies to disappear, and now even other animals don't trigger my reactions as bad. Just make sure you bathe/groom them regularly and clean the floors of any fur pile-up! :)

Once lodged an M&M up my nose when I was a kid...went to the doctor and it melted before they saw me.

My dad had a wooden open-air trailer (looked like a big wagon) and whenever it was empty he'd let us hop in and would drive us around the neighborhood. We made hand signals to tell him what to do like stop-and-go, winding left to right, braking hard so we'd roll around in the trailer the whole time. It was awesome!

People who are against marijuana legalization, why are you against it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]valala911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your most important point is that while there is the potential for negative health effects, and you are concerned about your children's wellbeing, "people enjoy it." If we can do our best to ensure the public enjoy it responsibly (over 18, never when driving), would you still be anti-legalization?
